***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I think this is the one for me - the 7" was just a gadget/toy with that resolution, the 9" actually might become genuinely useful with that resolution...

I agree, having seen it in my local retailer park I couldn't buy the regular EEE because of the screen size and especially the resolution, but I think I will buy the 900. Also for your £309 you're getting 1 GB ram and 8 GB storage (if I'm reading these articles correctly) so that means you're saving the cost of buying more ram and an SD card.

Its cheap to buy RAM and SD, can probably get them both for £50.
But the SD card is much slower than having 8 GB flash, and I'm just saying that having 1GB ram and 8 GB flash in the device to start with offsets the cost of the 900, so you're not just paying £100 simply for a bigger/high res screen. TBH you can't find the 4 GB for anything like a reasonable price now anyway, you'd be lucky to find one under £250.

Anyway, I'm just stating my opinion, that I think it's worth the extra. Of course we need to see real pricing though - Asus saying £309 doesn't mean you'll be able to get one for that.

Current 4gb 701 ~£220 + £50 for ram and SD card = £270

£309 - £270 = £39 for the bigger screen.........sounds like a bargain! :D

Lol well i think the reason that the Eee is so good, is that it was around £200. And so small, but its a good price for the new Eee coming out, if its released at that price.

Right guys.

My boss has just bought one of these eee PC's. He need to be able to plug in an external USB disk drive and to be able to install his own programs.

However to do this i take it he will need to install XP?

Is it straight forward and could he run XP from his USB pen drive?

Also, what is the max SSD he can buy?

installing his own progs might be difficult under linux if he wants quick and easy, XP can be run from an externall hdd, or installed a number of ways (usb pen drive, usb -> cd rom drive)

Dont think you can buy bigger ssd's as they are soldered on the mobo

Well you can use the External with Xandros, but yes you can install XP from a USB pen drive.

Installing a new SSD is hard, but he can get upto a 16GB (maybe 32GB) SD Card, afaik. But 4-8GB SD HC, or a USB Pen Drive.

so basically if he uses his 8gb usb pen then hell be fine with storage?

then install XP from his USB pen and it will run fine?

the hd space is only 2GB so can that be upgraded by buying a new SD card or will it best using a USB?

He will be traveling a lot you see and will always be on the move with different clients. anything external cant be used as its too bulky.

Regarding the new 900 version, presumably the windows version and linux version will be identical in terms of hardware, so buying the cheaper linux one and putting XP on it straight away shouldn't be a problem?

I'm hoping so, as loads of people should have spare copies of XP lying around these days.

With the 2G versions, he is given 2GB space, so he might want to use NLite on his XP. And yes he can use his SD Card or USB Stick to store things.

I found it easier to use an external DVD ROM, but ive done it with USB, installing XP.

If he has the 2G version instead of the 4G, definitely NLite.

Fnar... still no stock of the 4GB 701 :/

Tell me about it, every time i look on the various eee websites i hear about how they're launching in X country or releasing X new model...

...Maybe Mr Asus should be sorting out his existing supply problems and the resultant profiteering by retailers before undertaking any new commitments.

Very frustrating, i'd really like one but don't want to go hunting around and calling stores to try and find one in desperation.

Will be heading out shortly to pick up my 4gb version from a large toy store:D. The EEE pc will be perfect for my travels, more of a luxury that isn't a necessity but worth it!

They seem to have a lot of stock at the minute, for some reason.

I use my Eee a lot, the battery life is superb i think, i plug it into my LCD TV a lot.

Great purchase :).
