***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Just wait until the 900 comes out. There will be loads of 701's nice and cheap second hand. I reckon £120ish for a 4gb which for me at less than half price of the 900 series will make it a bargain.
I really doubt you will get them so cheap. Unless the supply issue is sorted and they are widely available maybe the 150 mark, but i would say more like 170-180.

Agreed.

Id be very suprised if it halves in price.

Id be saying atleast £170ish, even then it might even just become slightly cheaper.

£170-200.

I will wait until there is stock available for the 900. I just hope that greedy e-tailers dont try and shaft the consumer like they did with the 701 series. I know of one that is selling the 2g well over rrp and recently upped the price even more :O

Just got my 3 month old 4gb 701 with 4gb SD card through an MM wanted ad for around the value you have quoted. They are only going to go down in value as demand for the 900 will be driven by those who didn't want a 701 cause of the small screen or small storage and by those who already have a 701 who want a 900... hence more 701's on the second hand market. Ok maybe the 2g's will be more £120 but I doubt the 4g's will be £170+.

I just got XP installed for a second time, with all the SP2 updates with a disk usage of 479mb :).

Not bad, but more importantly have you tried out any games :p I've just been trying out a snes emulator and also UT.. which runs at a crisp smooth 60fps and is perfectly playing on the tiny screen, awesome!!!

smallest install of win xp (sp2) i seen is 220mb, thats cut right down though, no internet explorer, no windows firewall, took like 5 seconds to load up on my pentium 4 1.8Ghz testbed lol

I have WinUAE (amiga emulator) installed with a ton of games on my SD card and it runs perfectly! Pinball Fantasies, Sensi, Cannon Fodder and Project X on the move!

just a little something:

Laptop Magazine has an interview with Jerry Shen, where he talks about future plans for the Eee PC line. They include the already announced 8.9″ Eee PC 900 and Eee PC with Windows XP preinstalled. Other plans include the possibility of larger non-ssd hard drives, Intel Diamondville processors, and “more stylish looks.”
Shen also indicates that the Eee PC 900’s price may be $499 for US users. Not bad!

Snippet:

Intel’s Diamondville: Shen revealed that the low-cost notebook platform will adopt Intel’s Diamondville processor in Q2 rather than VIA’s mobile computing platform.
More Colors and Stylish Looks: In May or June, Asus will release “very stylish” versions of the Eee PC. Shen says they will have a New York City sleekness

Will you incorporate Intel’s Diamondville processor (now Atom) or consider VIA’s Isaiah’s processor? Which do you think will be integrated?
From my view point, Diamondville is the better choice, because it uses the 45-namometer processor. And pricewise it is very competitive. In my planning I will continue to use Intel’s Diamondville. And for the VIA one I think from the power point of view, Diamondville is still better. In May, these machines will be hitting the market

ALSO:

I knew i read 20gb ssd.
"The screen size will be 8.9 inches. And the storage, which was originally 4GB, will be upgraded to versions with an 8GB solid state drive and a 12 to 20GB solid state drives."

Yes, it was never $200 in the US, more like $300 for the 2GB surf, $350 for the 4GB surf and $400 for the 4 GB. I think it's reasonable to expect the new 900 for under £350, especially given the european price of 399 euros.

Put OS X Tiger (10.4.9) on my Eee last night. Was quite good but no wireless driver. iTunes worked as normal, animations were a tad slower but all was well. Tried to put it on an SD card so I could dual boot easily but the file copy stops on 16% every time. Odd.

Eek, it seems ive just bought a 4Gb Black version. :D

Im hooking it up to an external 80gb 2.5" hdd and an external cardreader. Also very tempted to do the touchscreen mod. Just have to wait 7-10 days for the delivery now.

Edit; Finger just slipped on the touch screen as well. Looks like im going to be doing some modding in a week or two. :D
