***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

even with the slightly larger screen size, i can't help but think that the new 9xx models is losing the price/coolness factor for it's actual specs.

I agree. At sub £230 the 4g is a geeky little toy that is worth a punt. You can also mod it to your hearts content without the risk of losing too much. £300+ is getting into a pricey area for me.

Well there's enough people here (including me) lined up to buy the 900, so I don't think Asus will have a problem shifting them. I also don't agree anyway, for me the coolness and me wanting one is about three things - size, weight and price. The size and weight are still completely fine, and the price is still under half of what you'll pay for most other UMPCs. And having used a 701 in my local retail outlet, I honestly found the screen too small and too low res, plus the touchpad was too small and 4GB is too little storage (how about a 12gb + 16gb SD card). So that's 4 important things the 900 will improve on, which to me makes it worth the extra money.

Hey don't get me wrong it will be cool, but the original will always be the coolest. It had just enough spec to do pretty much anything, and anything else you want(ed) you could mod into it (touch screen, bluetooth, more storage, gps etc...).

Anyone know if there are any solderless usb hub mods out there? Ive seen one with single usb ports, but id ideally like to hook the touchscreen up to the webcam usb header, then also have another 4 or so usb ports for memory/gps mods etc.

does anyone think asus are going to outsmart themselves if they include the next models with a touchscreen and other showoff crap that you really don't need?

can't see it being less than 350 if that's the case and then it suddenly loses that "wow it's only a couple hundred quid, might get one to play around" factor.

the extra SSD space is welcome as is the slightly bigger screen but i hope they don't bloat it, unless they give model choices with/w.out touchscreen etc.

Just seems pointless :/ To be fair a touch screen isnt how to use it, i cant see it being a good idea as standard thats all.

Yeah its a nice mod or novelty, but thats it. Never once when i used my eee did i have urges to prod the screen for any ease of use, the touchpad did everything fine. Thats all, seem too pricey for no real gain for production

and no where officially confirms it if you read it.. ? edit more* They even say its only a rumour, and give no evidence.

A touch screen is handy, as it converts it from a mini laptop to a PDA, and a remote control (Slimserver) not a gimmick at all. Also as a tom tom

If its gonna be 12 GB SSD, 9inch screen and touch screen for £300 I would buy it, if the touch screen is gonna be £350-£400 then forget it, may as well put £150 and get a macbook.

I know there totally different sizes, but there my options.

i seriously doubt the touchscreen is standard, it will be a seperate price/configuration, just because the touchscreen mod is somewhat popular and lets face it, its a massive novelty selling point of a small notebook.
Average joe does not dare modding the thing hisself, so its done for him, at a premium.

they are doing it then..

If you were disappointed about ASUS stopping plans for a touchscreen on the next generation Eee PC, you can smile now. According to touch screen manufacturers in this Digitimes article, ASUS will indeed be including touch panels in the next generation Eee PC.
A new article also on Digitimes, posted today, further explains that the 8.9″ Eee PC:
“will include touchscreen panels and possible GPS support, with shipments expected to begin in May or June, according to Kevin Lin, vice president of Asustek’s sales department. Pricing is projected to reach NT$15,000 (US$500)”
So, it looks like it might be the Eee PC 900 afterall that gets more than just a touchscreen!

Thats what the earlier link said :p - just paraphrased what the sales VP had said...

Its also thought it will only cost them $10per unit to add the touchscreen...

ps3ud0

the touchscreen is only handy IF you will use it as a GPS or a remote for htpc etc

and even still i'd rather just buy a dedicated touch screen remote or a dedicated tomtom as they're most likely more functional anyway.

well i've just ordered one for £220 as i'm off to the states in a couple of weeks and need a new toy for the plane :p, i figure i could sell it for near that if i decide i don't like it.
