***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I really would love to get one of these, the 20gb SSD 900 series are what i'm tempted in as i'm seen it retailing at a big toy shop for £280 which is the cheapest i've seen.

Then again the MSI offering is even more tempting except for the lack of a SSD which is really drawing me towards the eeepc at the moment....

What is the battery life like on the 900 series? I've been hearing mixed reviews about it :s

Ah ha. Tempted more by the 1000 for the larger keyboard...but smaller = cooler. :o

According to Cnet there is a 904 coming out which is on the same chassis as the 1000 and therefore has a larger keyboard, but which has the original 900mhz Eee processor and only a 9" screen rather than a 10" screen.

Yeah Ive read that elsewhere - doubt many will want it since it seems to be a regression - dont see the point myself (other than larger keyboard)...

I think the 1000 is pushing into a place which defeats the object of what the asus eee is all about...

Its meant just to be a portable web/document notebook "netbook" whatever..

i dont see why they need to whack out bigger models that have more and more spec...

I think the 901 is as far as it needs to go for the time being...

If i was to consider a 1000 i may as well just save a little more and buy a "full" laptop.

Im still waiting for these 901s like tbh, at this rate i may as well get a acer one... but they are a little bigger arent they? lol ill slug it out til the 901s become readily available, although the 900 is really tempting me just to click buy :)

Its 1.5" larger, hardly breaking your lap, with added weight due to the larger drive. Seeing as the 9" was only marginaly larger than the 7", i wouldnt say they keep whacking out larger and larger models.

On every review i have read of the 9xx and 7xx they complain about the keyboard.... forgive Asus for wanting to FIX something people were complaining about.

The EEEs arent perfect by any means, but my 1000H is pretty sweet, getting into XP in about 20sec atm, which isnt half bad. Need to reinstall it i think as i nlited off a little TOO much, but its getting there. Aiming for a XP/Hardy KDE4 dual boot with a seperate docs partition, should have tons of space in the 160GB drive i put in.

pics as promised.

I must say the finish is spectacular, shame Asus havent used the same material around the screen, but the slick black is very comfortable to rest your hands on and makes the EEE a real looker, untill you get greasy fingerprints all over it, but a handy cloth is provided to deal with that.

The keyboard is good, glad i went with the 1000, any smaller would be pretty hard to use, still getting used to a lappy keyboard over a full PC one, and the right SHIFT button is a bit of a pain (keep hitting UP instead, takes time to re-learn where to put my fingers!)

Its not exactly featherweight, but its light enough to be pretty easy to carry around, even if you bundle a cd drive with it too. very nice cover to protect it, minimalist but durable.

Multi-touch is great, still getting used to using it, it detects up to three fingers, you can rotate, zooom, and there is even a utility to change what functions are activated (and turn them off if they arent your thing). Amazed there arent more lappys with this on yet!

The atom seems punchy enough so far, though i do have a pretty pristine XP copy running, not done a lot with it yet so i may sing a different tune in 6 months time.... i doubt it though, this is mainly for Internet and Office use, so it should be right on the money!

Oh and its a 6600mAh battery, for those who were wondering.

not tested yet, been running off mains mostly as i am still tweaking the OS and loading up the apps i want, and i havn't reinstalled the Asus clockspeed app.

its rated as something like 3.5hrs to 7hrs, i'd like to see how long it lasts powering a DVD drive from the USB hub and watching a DVD though, amongst other things.

watched an approx 100 min DVD last night running on battery, with the DVD powered from the USB bus, WiFi and Bluetooth on, no powersaving mode activated.

ended with the EEE at ~50% battery life left.... assuming that is true that puts the bat life at 200min, or 3hr 20min in this situation. Maybe not enough to watch an extended edition of LOTR, but good enough for some DVD watching while on the train or plane. Also runs pretty smooth, and the screen is big enough as long as you aren't too far away.

I'll have another go some time with Bluetooth and WiFi off, see what that does.

simonnance - appreciate those battery life tests :). Half the ones manus quote are usually ideal lab conditions and poorly reflect real-world usage...

the speakers aren't bad either.... not exactly my Aegos, but i've heard worse. Only compliant is they might be a little on the weak side, though i cant get the Fn shortcut to increase volume working yet (drivers on my new install) so that might make it better.

i'll post other results when i get time.

im supposed to be getting a replacement laptop from an insurance company that coudlnt fix my laptop, think it would be possible to say give me a 901 instead? lol

Work ordered a 901 today to replace my 701. Only the XP model tho, as the 20GB linux ones seem a little hard to find.

Question for anybody that might know. I'm looking at this but it will need to be able to support a serial cable some how. Are there any known ways to use one with this? A USB-serial adapter maybe? Is it difficult to get working on linux with this?

Cheers all

you can buy usb/serial adaptors, no comment though on how well they work, or their functionality in Linux, as i dont have any serial devices.
