***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I have a USB>Serial adaptor which works great but cant answer how well, if at all, it works with Linux.

It wouldnt even be that helpful of me to test it since chances are it'll use a different chipset to others on the market and mines a nobrand make.

If its important you can try Belkin/other big brands and see if they offer linux support on their website, then just pay the extra for that.

Its alive! :D

After a seriously failed attempt at shoehorning in loads of kit into my eeepc, I managed to break the wifi. Turns out I somehow managed to damage the aerial wires. So I decided to buy new aerials. Bought some big flat copper ones. Only managed to get round to fitting them last night, and I'm very pleased to say it works perfectly. Infact it might possibly work better than before. Everywhere in my house now has full signal strength. Remains to be seen how far outside I can go. I'm moving to a new flat in just over a week, and i hope I'm going to be able to sit on the waterfront and still browse. :D

Edit; Oh and after getting majorly annoyed at the modding, I decided to live without all the mods. Ive kept the touchscreen though as that's far too cool.

Guys, my girlfriend is looking to buy a 900 eee, should she opt for Linux or Windows, what are the main advantages/disadvantages of having either?

Windows- lower storage, takes more space, slower running, but more ubiquitous and probably easier to pick up and play with if you have an XP history. Compatability with off the shelf programs.
Linux- more storage, lighter on resources, but probably harder to get into. Harder to find equal quality Open Source progs to XP off the shelf ones.

at least IMO.

Thats a fair evaluation - if youve got the time to fiddle Linux will reward you, but if you havent its hard to see past XP...

I love Linux, but dont have the time to really get into it so generally end up relying on XP - I think a lot of people share that...

Can't find a black, 20gb, Windows eee sold anywhere :(
Didnt think the Windows flavour came in 20Gb SSD - though not kept up with all the revisions and sub-models...

ps3ud0

My 2G Eee won't boot, when I turn it on the BIOS screen appears and then it goes to a black screen with a flashing blip? Could anyone help me please?

Thanks,

Matt.

I've had an unfortunate accident while moving all my stuff back home from uni, where too much pressure was applied onto the top that has put a big crack in my screen. It's the actual LCD panel that's damaged, the surrounding areas of the screen work as normal so I'm pretty sure that's the only fault. Anyone know if these are easily replacable? I might ring Asus and ask if I can buy just a screen but I can't see that happening, any guidance is welcome. :)

*Looks at above posts*

Well it appears like if your name is Matt you are pretty much guaranteed misfortune with an Asus EEE PC, keep that in mind all you other Matts out there.

I'm really tempted to get an EEE because I spent a lot of times on trains and books are getting pretty boring, especially when you see some one using the wifi available.

I'm just a bit confused which one to go for. It'll only be used for web browsing/instant messaging (msn) so I'm leaning towards the 900 because with Linux you've got the flexibility of installing XP if you want, but the larger drive. Is the Atom in the 901 worth the extra £60ish pounds for what I'd want to use it for?

I used my asus eee a lot on the trains, was fantastic. The 7" screen is nice but if I'd waited I would have gone for the 9" model.

watched an approx 100 min DVD last night running on battery, with the DVD powered from the USB bus, WiFi and Bluetooth on, no powersaving mode activated.

ended with the EEE at ~50% battery life left.... assuming that is true that puts the bat life at 200min, or 3hr 20min in this situation. Maybe not enough to watch an extended edition of LOTR, but good enough for some DVD watching while on the train or plane. Also runs pretty smooth, and the screen is big enough as long as you aren't too far away.

I'll have another go some time with Bluetooth and WiFi off, see what that does.

Hey simonnace,

what do you actually get with the ee pc 1000 model in terms of accessories etc?

cheers

So there is no advantage in getting linux then installing windows?

Oh and do you reckon it would be able to photoshop on it? Just for resizing etc?

Just got my EeePC 900 - 12gb - XP - 1gb ram - LG external slim DVD-RW - £200 delivered

I have to say, other than a very small keyboard it is really nice to use.
