***The Official ATI Radeon HD 5850 / 5870 Reviews and Discussion Thread***

so do we really think the stream processors will make that much difference ?

GPU is lower clocked - but I'm sure with a bit of overclocking it would reach near the 5870 ?

memory is lower clocked -but not by much - and again I'd imagine overclocking it would get it near the 5870 ?
5850 only as less stream processors which won't much difference .

it should clock to 800 core /1.1ghz+ memory.

its a bargain at £200 then :)

especially if its overclockable ?

lets hope it has the soft-volt tweakable VRMs ??

wonder if there is a bizarre possibility the core could clock higher due to the lower number of stream processors ?

Its a prototype so general finish is poor, although I'm sure you know the end mill finishing pass leaves visible swirls that are in reality very mooth. Eddy has a pretty good idea what works by now. He's going to be designing around his cnc tooling costs and op time, sure there are design improvement that may gain a few percent performance and cost a disproportionate amount to manufacture. Pretty hard to fault EK tbh, the only thing I'd wish for is stand offs to the pcb.

Yeah, I hear ya. Actually I have one of their blocks and it's probably the best made block I've ever bought. The finish on the water side I think isn't so important anyway as long as it's good on the GPU contact side.

It's hard not to pick holes in machined parts as that's part of what I do for a living. I do think though that I'd like to see some shallow channels in the open flow areas to increase the surface area contact of water to copper. Only because there is quite a large area there where there is nothing and I don't believe that it would add anything to the machining time

Still, as you say, it's important not to add anything to the costs and I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

i never ever liked coolers like that, where the fan is right in the center.
becuse when its blowing efficiantly the air isnt just going out the back its going the other way aswell, not to mention if you Xfire them the fans wont get much airflow.

yeah, i want it to exhaust all it's air out the back of the case. i don't need more heat inside the case! :)

i think it was that the asus cards just had higher quality capacitors or VRM's or something? as far as i remember all reference design cards have voltages that are changeable by software =] whats wrong with me tonight and my unspecificness xD

Looks like he disabled SLI on the 295 to be honest. Whatever the explanation, those results don't correspond to all the others released by reputable sites.

I hope these next generation of games are worth all of the money we will soon be spending. Although Crysis has fantastic eye candy, lets be honest.. its a terrible game!!

I will be upgrading now only when I think a games are good enough to warrant it.

Modern Warfare and Dragon Rising are already pre ordered!! If they are as good as my hopes and expectations, then the 5870 x 2 will have a welcome and loving home to go to!!!
