***The Official Core i5 Overclocking Thread***

I would think the easiest way to start is to set you memory ratio to 6 and you cpu multiplier to 15.. Reboot and then set your bclk to 200. Go to your voltages and set cpu core to 1.2V, VTT to 1.2V and memry to 1.6V... Leave the other voltages on Auto. Go try that and let me know if it worked...

Guy's, I want to upgrade from an E8400 (@4.0 Ghz) on a P35 motherboard. I actually only want to upgrade to get PCI-E 2.0 so could just get a P45 motherboard.

However its always nice to upgrade to shiny new hardware.

I had been thinking of going for a i7 920 but the 1156 cpu's seem to be doing well here and I'm quite interested in the Lucid Hydra motherboard when it comes out.

Money is not really an issue so are there any benefits to 1156 over and above cost - the machine is only used for gaming and it will go into a pretty good watercooled case.

Regards
Fred

I honestly can't see any point in upgrading this part of your system. A pair of HD5850's in CrossFireX will max it out nicely and give you a proper performance boost where you need it.

Thanks, I'll probably just upgrade the board to a P45. I can't use the HD5850's unfortunately as I can't do three screens with them. I've just sent my 5870 back, until either the active adapters are available or TH2Go is updated it was of no use to me.

Thanks again for the help.

Any idea why cpuz would show my core speed above what it says on the box?

i havent enabled OC genie or touched the bios yet??

Hmmm - I thought the multi-monitor thing was one of the big selling points on these things?

Yes it is, I already have it through TH2Go. So either I could continue to use that or use Eyefinity. Or so I thought, TH2Go software cannot apply the 5040x1050 with the 5870 and to use Eyefinity you need either one monitor with a displayport or an active adapter.

I could not find anyone in the UK selling one of those (with it in stock) so I've RMAed the 5870.

Shame really as it seemed a nice card.

My current thinking is a GTX295 for graphics or maybe two 4890 Vaporx 2 Gb cards.

It seems the Scythe ninja rev b is a pretty decent cooler for the money.

Have got a 8+ hour prime stable overclock of 4.1GHz with good temps.

Currently getting my head around my EVGA boards bios, will be giving it a flash to see if it sorts my memory timing issue.

Playing around with 150x20 on the stock cooler, temperatures hitting the mid 60's so will give it a little push to 3.1 or 3.2ghz.

Still waiting for Thermalright to release a 1156 bracket in the UK so i can play around with my TRUE.

Had a few problems with mine today. Got it running stable at 3.8 using just over 1.3V but tried 4GHz and it all went nuts and wouldnt work for ages haha. managed to get it a bit stable, flashed the BIOS and now its fine but running back at stock. Time to give it another go I think :p

That only using 1.3v? Not bad!! Need to test mine a bit more, just keep upping the speed and not altering the voltage, set it at 1.4 at the start, not willing to go any higher so see what I can clock to on it :p

4GHz IBT stable and not going over 60C :)

EDIT: turned off Load Line Caliberation or whatever its called, apparently Intel recommends this. Before I was running IBT and volts would drop down to 1.32, now they're shooting up to 1.48 and temps going to mid 70's. Is that normal? And is it better to run with it turned off? Seemed to be doing fine before

Well got my i5 yesterday and easy as pie hit 4Ghz on the stock cooler and seems stable, can't test it in prime as it hits 99c withing seconds.

Although I am getting a lot of V drop from my GD80, 1.4v in bios and 1.352 in windows, sometimes dropping to 1.33v, christ seen it go to 1.28v few times.

Wow swap that stock cooler for something better soon.

I wouldn't call a processor that hits 99c within seconds stable though. But it does show what could be done with decent cooling.

Can people say what BIOS settings they are using (i.e volts on chipset, etc) please. ta
