System requirements for the BETA have been released by Blizzard as well now for those who are interested:

So its a DX9 game that needs the 'top end DX9 system' that existed prior to DX10 cards to run on minimum???

Lolwut? Seriously why not just make it DX11 in that case with graphics scaling down to DX9?

And the sheeple will say that the graphics are low so that it will run on older PCs, but that minimim spec is rather aggressive.

All I want now is for the music to be atmospheric and engaging like the previous two. If it's not, I'll simply queue up the D1 and D2 OSTs and play them in the background with the D3 music disabled. :)

Those system specs are kind of odd for a DX9 only game.

Seems it looking ugly has nothing to do with being able to allow people with older systems to play it.

Seems Blizz just half-assed the graphics, the reccomended cards are DX10, so they could easily have opted for DX11 to gain it's performance benefits and downscaled for older cards while making a good looking game.

I certainly wouldn't say it is an ugly game. Have you been watching the low quality streams? There are a few 1920x1080 videos and the painterly style looks great even without AA which we have yet to see.

I have seen those and once you're close up on the character models they're very well detailed.

The game could look far better considering the system requirement listed.

Personally I think this is because they used the WoW engine (or some version of it) to make the game instead of creating a new modern engine. Cheapskates :p

The reason they do that is so that lots of people can play their games.

Blizzard want lots of people to play their games, and not feel obliged to upgrade their systems to play it.

If it uses the same engine as StarCraft 2, it will still look amazing to be fair...

so when is the beta available for us ordinary folk ?

Europe's going to be "shortly" after the US, so potentially some of the people with their beta profiles filled in within the next few weeks.

I'd agree. Some of the high quality videos I've seen look great, and I love the style and direction they've gone with. Not everything needs to look like Crysis.

I wouldnt call the graphics decent either, especially not for how high the minimum spec is.

Blizzard seem to be very bad at making graphics engines - They make ones which honestly look crap, but require beastly rigs to handle the poor coding.

The only reason IMO why the graphics arent any better is because Blizzard cant make better optimised engines.

To be honest, not a single game they've ever released had stellar/benchmarking graphics. Diablo 2 looked dated on release, neither WC3 nor WoW wow'ed (pardon the pun) us with graphics either. Blizzard is all about epic cut scenes (or at least has been since Starcraft) and amazing game play.

As for the 'high' requirements: The Witcher 2 is a DX9 game as well but I dare anyone to try and run it on any DX9 rig. IF Diablo 3 was released 4 years ago then you'd have a point about the 'high' requirements. Nowadays anyone can get a PC that's far more powerful than what the game requires for a marginal price.

Yes I know that, but I was countering the claims that Blizzard purposefully use out of date graphics engines to reduce the required specs.

Pretty damn sure they said so themselves. Yes, they can't code to save their lives (WoW being a prime example of slaughtering even the most powerful rigs with shadows maxed up), but they said time and time again that they intend for their games to be played on a wide range of machines.
