Can't imagine why you'd want to get in the beta of this game. Normally I'd be all over a beta, especially a Blizzard one, but I'm actively avoiding any betas, demos or preview videos. Why spoil the story when it's the main point of the game?

We've waited 10+ years for a Diablo sequel. I'm going to relish every little morsel of storyline. When I load it up the conditions will be perfect. I'll get some nice beers in, some decent snacks, it'll be dark, and I'll shut the curtains, turn off the light and close the door. My computer will be primed with all settings to maximum and 7.1 engaged. Then I'll light some candles and get naked...

Might just be me and the guys I play with then, but I figured that the storyline was kinda the point of this type of RPG.

its a hack and slash game. story just tries to validate the change in enviroment and monsters i'm sure people won't be running through inferno difficulty for the story :P

Iv always thought Diablo was all about the loot and the challenge of the hardest dungeons/bosses and bragging rights etc. The reason i want to play the beta is to test out the classes, the story will probably be good, playing the beta wont ruin it as its really short.

It totally didn't occur to me that there might be people that would be excited about D3 for whom the story wouldn't be the main attraction. That said, I'm not surprised there would be people on OcUK to buck the trend :p

Loot, killing things, more loot. :p

The story's never really been hugely strong in any of the games I've played of this type. Diablo has a great back story, but I've never been blown way by how it's delivered in game.

It's been a long time since D2 and the walls of text though. Looking at interviews they're going to try and deliver story in a way that doesn't disconnect you from the game play so much. :)

That said, it's all about the gameplay for me. And the amount of spoilers in the tiny part of first act aren't going to spoil the rest of the game exactly.

I don't get the appeal of being a beta tester. Unless it's something like Minecraft, where the beta is effectively the release and is "beta" in name only.

Betas have pretty much become synonymous with preview demos it seems. Letting small numbers of people access your game and slowly increasing the number in the run up to the release seems to be the de facto method of drumming up hype.

Plus you've got the fact that your average gamer geek will be foaming at the mouth at the prospect of early access to give them a one-up on the rest of the players. I'm not sure that any actual bug testing goes on, but it's a work of mastery that games companies can actually get people to pay for the privilege of testing their games in some cases.

Post of the year award goes to you sir.

The Diablo beta is for stress testing, and well advertised as. :) They need to make sure their servers will cope ok, and they can't forecast that with just the numbers from the friends and family betas.

While there are betas that are used to build hype, I've participated in plenty through places like combat testing which are focused around raising bugs and the like.

I'm more than happy to enjoy the story provided in the beta, then enjoy it all over again when the game is released. I'm more interested in seeing how the gameplay feels and if the changes to skills are good. I can't see it spoiling the game for me. :)

What servers, login servers? the already existing battlenet that does that for wow and sc2? Plenty enough going on there! Game isn't hosted server side, but client side, but I guess there is some client-server communication, like auction house but euhm.. yeah.

While the game itself is hosted client side, all loot and characters are authenticated with servers to (hopefully!) prevent duping and boting, hence why the game is online only.

Blizzard have been very vocal to say it's a stress test (in addition to testing as wide a range of hardware as possible), there's tons of information regarding it. ;)
