***The Official E2140/E2160 Overclocking Thread***

Alec,

This might be a bit irrelevant but i had trouble with my E4500 limiting at 334MHz FSB before i reseated the CPU a few times which gave me 360MHz, strange board the P5K Vanilla.

What memory are you using?

Ah thanks for the heads up. :) Yeah its just the ram holding me back now. FSB will go up fine, and so will ram but errors and stuff start creeping in and stuff. Not designed to be overclocked this stuff! its 667mhz <competitor name> value ram. :(

Ah good. Was sorta stressing out with the mobo and RAM.

If it'll hit 3.2GHz easy then I'll be happy ;D

Should I buy any more case fans do you think? I'd like to max the case out. I don't mind if it sounds like a jet taking off ;D

Maybe I'll stretch out and buy an Antec Nine Hundred. Hmm :\

What sorta clocks would I expect with a rig like this? I'm not sure if I'll order it this month. Might wait until Xmas sales, etc.

I'm hoping around 3GHz.

Id think about a different hard drive, 7200.10 is a lottery whether you get a noisy or acceptable one. The 7200.11 maybe slightly more expensive but has a speed advantage, or get a samsung spinpoint instead.

Geil ram is nice and cheap but crucial ballistix pc5300, pc6400 (I have), and pc8500 are very good overclockers. My ram is doing 562 fsb 1125 DDR2.

Im also getting a samsung DVD writer, think Ill get the light scribe sata-II; since u only get 1 IDE port on the gigabyte boards now. Light scribe just cause I wont be backing up vast amounts to DVD so the cheaper non-lightscribe media isnt an advantage to me.

Now is as good a time as any to buy a e2x00 since there will be something better for cheap on the horizon after Christmas.

Ive got pc6400 ballistix running on a P35-DQ6 at 1125ddr with +0.25 (above default 1.8v), I bought this ram cause it had a good reputation for overclocking. Crucial also has the best RMA service also having the returns dept. in the UK you cant lose.

Im not running 1:1 since the motherboard doesnt like to go over 395fsb (cpu wall?), but I have the ram at 2:3.

375 x 8 = 3Ghz with my e2160. 1.4125v

I've got mine running at 2.4 gig, quiet as you like. A bit scared to push it futher, 800 mhz clock speed jump though, I am very pleased. Bargain of the year, does the stepping make a difference?

Yes the stepping does make a difference, yours is a MO revision, which is cooler and uses less volts. Thats all you really needa know :)

Dont worry about pushing it a bit further, you should be able to manage atleast 2.8ghz with a stock fan.

Nah, go for the geil, far far lower fail rate, ive had to RMA my ballistix RAM 3 times already, since july, and its more expensive. Madness to get it, besides the geil RAM will potentially get you up to 4ghz at stock....is more than that really needed ?

The previous gen DDR ballistix was dodgy but crucial RMAed it no problems. Obviously you would do better to avoid it but DDR2 ballstix has no such reputation. Are u sure you are not talking about DDR ram not DDR2?

You must have experience of the turnaround time at crucial, apparently 48 hours. Is this true?

No, the model im speaking of is the 667mhz crucial ballistix 2x1gb, ask around in the memory forums it fails a fair amount, the pc6400 seems to have a better life expectancy, although im not entirely sure why. It fails on me at 800mhz 4,4,4,12 which is a slight overclock it must be said, but it should be able to cope.

They'l normally RMA it within 3 days, very good, but not when you have to do it once every 2 months.

Im saying they have higher fail rates than the geil memory yes. Mine in particular fails a lot....dosn't mean other peoples does , but theres a wide consensus that they are "live fast die young" chips.

You leaving it at 2.8 then ? personally id try get it to atleast 3ghz before doing a very long stress test.
Leaving it at 2.8 would be silly, I'm gonna go for 3.2 if possible :D
Edit: I just bumped it up to 2.9 and the system refused to boot. Not like before, this time the monitor stayed on standby. After a couple of tries it finally booted and I went straight into the BIOS to bump up the vcore. It was at 1.306 and I bumped it up to 1.31 and it still didn't boot. Is more vcore needed? After taking it back to 2.8 and 1.306 it booted fine.

id say yes it needs more vcore, the amount you have to increase the vcore by goes up as you get closer to the clocks maximum. Keep at it, just make sure your RAM is capable too.
