*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Already got one, also dropped off 2 of my smaller cargo holds for armour, have also taken to pulling wanted types out of FSD and popping them off as well...
Shame the game doesnt remember what you have blown up...

Is there anyway to assign the Kills Warrant Scanner to a separate key? Its a bit of a faff having to switch over from one group to another to use it (I want to maximise my weapons in one fire group).

Afraid not Cav...
I generally use Lasers + KWS in one group...
Lasers + Kinetics in another
(Or all lasers pew-pew)

Means for small ships you just use lasers + KWS, on larger ships you use the KWS whilst getting shields down then switch to kinetics when going for powerplant.

Armour upgrades generally aren't worth it mate. Elite's currently set up to work around shields. Due to the way you can be taken out by a power plant 'headshot', if you lose your shields you should be bugging out. As such, armour upgrades are a waste since they heavily impact your speed, agility and jump range.

Would have to disagree - I run my ships with max hull upgrades and just a standard shield. I max power to weapons and keep two pips in the engines, giving me über firepower while maintaining manoeuvrability. My shield takes a few hits sometimes, but I utterly müller enemy vessels in a very short amount of time - More so if I target a vital subsystem and manoeuvre to maintain the optimum firing position.
By contrast, I tried running with shield boosters instead and, while they do beef your shield up, if you happen to catch a couple of heavy hits from the Elite big ships and they drop, your shield now takes absolutely ages to come back up!
I also found power drains and mid-combat shutdowns to be a bigger issue on most ships, no matter what I switched off or set to lower priority and especially if they caught me in the Power Plant.

I ended up ditching the boosters and going back to relying on armour, positioning and beating the spit out of targets.

I find the opposite :P
Shields + Boosters + SCB's means the shields never drop in the first place.

OK, with a Vulture you have the agility to get clear of most fire to begin with so barely need to use SCB's at all but with the Python you are a big target...

So generally 1 in SYS, 1 in ENG and 4 in WEP
If under fire change to 4 SYS ofc, more in ENG if chasing an opponent.

For Vulture (or any ship) always 4 in WEP but kept 2 in shields as it is so manoeuvrable anyway.

I've only lost my shields once so far, and that was backing into an asteroid as I was flying backwards to maintain the shot lol

As for bugging out, as if thats an option ;)

PVE or PVP? If you're playing PVE then sure - currently modules aren't specifically targeted (Random modules currently for the top end NPC, but this is due to change). PVP your PP will be targeted and you'll be watching the rebuy screen before you know it. But Trig plays in open so has the risk of a PCP encounter.

PVE tactics currently don't scale up to PVP. PVP however scales down to PVE. I'd rather cover myself for the worst case scenario...

Got a bit too close to a Star this afternoon while not concentrating whilst fuel scooping and emergency dropped out of Supercruise and stupidly picked up 2% hull damage, escaped the Star and decided to repair my modules, starting with..Thrusters.. derp! Instantly drop out of Supercruise again and get another 2% from the emergency stop. Not really what I need to be doing 20K+ Ly out... :p Finding an unexplored System with two Earth-Likes cheered me up a bit half an hour later though.

Dunno if it's random, but Dangerous and above NPCs have a tendency to 'randomly' target my power plant an *awful* lot, based on the repair breakdown back at the station!!

I hardly even see another player, so not much experience with PvP. Only got two kills to my name, but based on how quickly all the others ran off I'm fairly confident my tactics have the desired effect!! :D

A lot depends on what's being flown, though - I found a lot of Cobra IIIs trying to take down my beefed-up Asp. You needed more than a Cobra to take that down head-to-head!

Another question, I've had a few assassination missions but the systems are huge and I often don't find the person or persons in looking for and have to abandon. Any tips? Really need a FSD interdictor unit I'd assume?

Have done quite well at RES recently but sticking to the Low ones ATM. I tried a high one and an Anaconda made short work of me!

Interdictor will allow you to pull the target out of supercruise giving you the opportunity to acquire your target there, otherwise you're pretty much stuck with dropping into unidentified signal sources to try and find the mark.

You will need an interdictor, a wake scanner might be of use as well..

When you pick up someone you are looking for then it will tell you in the scan window bottom left that they are a mission target..

I tend to drop into a system, then slowly head towards the flight lanes between the jump beacon and the stations, just keep an eye out for groups of ships and follow someone until you can get a decent scan, if you want them, hit them, if not move on..
Be careful if you pull a guy out of a flight though, his friends usually give you about 30 seconds before they join in..

As mentioned, finding Unidentified Signal Sources is the usual.
However, I've started to find more targets appear in Cruise now, so an FSD will be needed. Not sure if it's because I've ranked up, or a change in the new version.
I wouldn't expect a Wake Scanner to be necessary, as you can hop out of system and back in, where you will again find the target bimbling around... and if you're lucky, they'll be in a smaller ship this time!

The only thing to remember is that unless the target is WANTED in that system too, you'll start getting fines and bounties on your head from that system's local security/law enforcement forces, for the crimes of Interdicting, Shooting and finally Killing a non-wanted target.

Just means that, once you make off with your reward voucher, you can't return to that system for a bit and have to pay the fees once they have expired.

I believe you can still find them in USS which negates the need for an interdictor and negates fines for interdicting a clean target (if they are), it's also worth holding fire for a short while too as sometimes they will open fire first giving you freedom to finish them without penalty.

ANd you can happily return to the system, you just need to be aware that you will be wanted and be ready to deal with the consequences.

Managed to pick up a mission yesterday, kill a guy in a certain system, yeah not a problem, fly around, find the guy, Anaconda, ok no biggy, interdict, bang, fined, turns out the guy is Federal something or other, get 2 other ships drop in in short order and start attacking me, managed to kill him and his friends, but bloody hell it was close..

After this I ditched my extra armour and banged in an auto repair thing and then a basic discovery scanner in the spare hole.
Also rejigged by weapons a bit, got a few turretted multicannons as I like the auto targetting and then some normal gimbled multi's for the smaller hardpoints..

Popped over to Abe Lincoln, did a few small missions and now back over at iBootis as there seems to be better missions out that way, need to build up my funds again so I can get some more weapon upgrades...
