*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I just bought this on steam and have played for about 2hrs and still don't have a clue what I'm doing.

It's such a come down, in Eve Online I was a well known killer of noobs... now in this I have been dragged out of supercruise several times and lost 4 noob ships already :\

If you get interdicted you can escape by following the escape vector target on your screen. I actually don't mind being interdicted as I can usually fight my way out of it.

Played for a few hours myself managed to kill one pirate just need to find another one to complete my bounty.

What I am not too keen about is trying to find someone to fight. When I am in supercruise I can see the pirate I want but when I try and fly to him and jump out of supercruise there are no ships nearby. Its not like the old Elite where you could fly away from a space station and within a minute or two encounter ships you might want to take a pot shot at.

I can see why some people dont like this as few times you are flying towards a space station and it could be couple of minutes real time when you are just doing nothing.

Needs more play time but its not a game you can jump into for ten minutes and get a rewarding experience.

So ive been gone a while.....

Bought my Clipper that I had been hankering for for a while , but for some unknown reason I suddenly had the urge to do some exploring.

So traded it , spec'd up an Asp , and headed out into the darkness. That was about a week ago. There is something utterly compelling about just dissapearing off into the darkness. The moment I sat in the station , double , triple checking I had everything I need was a mix of excitement and unnerving apprehension. No more would I have the comfort of repairing at the nearest space station. I was going to be all alone. In the void.

I thrusted up and out and said goodbye to civilisation. First stop was to be Orion and the Horse head Nebula. It was more stunning and awe inspiring than I could have ever imagined. I took A LOT of screenshots out there, some of which ive added below.

Ive done combat , ive done trading , but Exploring....I think this is my thing :-)

Heading off the the American Nebula now , and planning to swing round , take on some sites and head to the centre.....Ill be gone a while :-)

Just noticed Elite is still on offer via Steam this weekend.

Is my PC up to it or would I be a bit disappointed?

Intel i5 760-2.80GHz Socket 1156
Corsair XMS3 (2X 2GB) PC3-12800C9
Radion HD6850
Samsung 240G Solid sate (non-pro)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 -1TB

Cheers.

Windows 7 Home edition

It really doesn't require a powerful PC at all. It should run and play fine. Rarely uses more than 2GB VRAM and sits at 60fps all the time but I have a GTX780. It should run fine but may need to turn down a few settings.

Made a couple of illegal runs and made enough to buy a Viper to see what thats like. Not long into the game and can see the same set of bulletin board missions coming up thought there would be more variety.

Is there any knack to the ones that say go to this system and look out for a particular ship or is it pot luck you find them. Also the ones where they say if you come across x cargo we want it ?

Basically, if you take the mission then the game spawns scenarios based on that mission when you enter unknown signal sources. A pretty poor way if implementing the missions really but I couldn't do any better so I shouldn't moan :p

Cargo example: exit supercruise @ USSs until the game spawns the cargo mission instance. Scoop and return for reward.

Bounty example: exit supercruise @ USSs until game spawns Bounty mission instance. Someone will send you comms, saying they saw the person you're looking for (somehow they automatically know you're looking for that specific person, go figure) in a specific system. Go to that system and exit supercruise @ USSs until the game spawns the bounty mission instance again, and there's your target.

:edit: this is how it was the last time I played... A few months ago!

The messages you are getting is for the alternate mission, normally someone saying don't kill this person kill this one instead, if you want to rank up with the faction you took the mission from just ignore the messages

As previously stated you can find USS and try and get the mission target there but now your target will also appear in SC and you can interdict them, just scan everyone and you should get mission target in the targeting screen
If mission is to kill more than one pirate be aware that they usually travel in wings so expect a couple of escorts to drop out a few seconds after interdiction, if you don't have an interdictor sometimes they will interdict you making life so much easier

The missions mechanics are pretty bad. Most of it was supposed to be placeholder but it has not really changed since alpha :/

Much of the game is still very scripted and there are only a handful of possibilities inside USSs and SC. Which is why it's so predictable.

Speaking of picking off pirates, when it says they are in a wing of 8, usually best to leave them alone unless its an Eagle or soemthing you can take down in a pass or two before the rest gang up on you...

so how do you make money!

Starting off with the asp, ive 4 whole tonnes of cargo space. Frankly ive got more room down the back of my sofa than that!

Looking at the galactic map you can see the trade route option highlighting movements of trade types around, so ive been trying to follow that. But the lack of cargo space and the minimal profits im making are just turning this into a chore.

Is there any port you can land at that will expand your cargo space? In beta there were various webpages you go go to which tracked the markets and gave you real time values which came in really handy, they were blocked off though, but does anything similar exist now?
