oh, as a starter, the missions are so freaking few and bad.

decent pay missions are more than the hyperspace jump capability so one have to ask why it is available

the only ones seem to be available are search and rescue, which is either flying around mindlessly until escape pod is showing on radar (bearing in mind that you have no clue which planet of the system this pod is) or surface retrieval which again is mindlessly driving around until something show up. That's just pretty bad game play. i mean why is every search and rescue is like the MH380 search as if there is no tracking devices fitted on these SPACE ships.


Not really it's about progression, jump range is tied into equipment on your ship and the ship itself. It's a complicated game with complicated mechanics.

to be honest I don't have a problem with landing or docking. once you know how to do it it is fairly straight forward but it is just BORING to do it over and over.

the real mind screw is SRV boarding to ship. I literally spent 30min trying to get the SRV onboard and i think it was a glitch, i just couldn't. so i exit the game and came back did it again and it was ok. I mean did i enjoy spend 30min trying to get onboard or did i enjoy the fact i have to exit game and come back to see "if" it was a glitch...also the time wasted failed my mission...

On the upside, I've raked in over 1.2 billion credits so far for my troubles! Don't let people tell you that there's no profit in exploration, there's plenty of credits to be made if you're willing to put the effort in :)

i've never used the docking computer, what would you WANT to use it?

Exactly. It's super easy to dock and half the fun.

I have picked it up over the last couple of days. I had a go at horizons at launch but not been back since. What has disappointed me is the hi res bounties are now way to high. Pretty much 3 million In and hour... Constant clippers/pylons/anacondas/FDL's. Paying 100k to 200k for not much of a fight. The new missions are confusing. Yes I have a fully rated Python but it should not be that easy. The controller complexity is also getting me down. I have still yet to sort out my SRV on my X52.
This IMO shows how some of the fun has gone from assassination mission. They used to really fight back with wings for compatriots... Not any more. A corvette and a sidewinder... Meh


May I recommend replacing one laser with a large cannon? The cannon when aimed at the PP is devastating. But it seemed you did well there. Well done

I remember my mission to the core I set the goal of scanning at least 1600 neutron stars (filtered the map so only they showed) and it netted stupid money. :D

On arrival home that got me Elite rank in exploration, glad I only had to do it once. Love the feeling of isolation out there.

Was weird bumping into a commander at SAG A, he logged off then came back 2 mins later and we had a nice chat once he realised I was not a threat. If I had lost my exploration data I probably would have uninstalled :D

Nice find!

It's a shame that this sort of thing only happens by accident rather than design, it would be fun to see black holes consuming companions or white dwarfs accreting matter from red giants etc.

Nice going on the exploration, that's some dedication!

I've picked up and kitted out a cobra and have been having a blast in hazardous res with my wingmate in his diamondback. We thought it would be a nice change from our big cumbersome ships, and it was!

Also had a good laugh in CQC. If you just want action, that's where it's at. Definitely best when you are chasing someone through tiny tunnels with pipes crossing them.

Up to viscount now in empire, so not long until I start thinking about a cutter.

Left on the 6th of December, returned last Monday so almost three months. Ship was my trusty Anaconda, 39.1 LY jump range on a full tank.

In black hole or neutron star systems I was mostly just scanning the primary and jumping to the next system, whole process takes about 50 seconds including cool down so you can scan roughly 60 systems in an hour, give or take a couple.

On a few occasions I'd scan the entire system if it peaked my interest (such as a white supergiant system which had 104 objects) or there was an Earth-like in the system. When traveling from the sphere to the core I usually didn't even scan the system primary, just scooped during the FSD cool down and jumped as soon as possible; can cover roughly 2K LY an hour with that method, which makes the journey to and from the core much shorter.

Nice going on the exploration, that's some dedication!

Three months? Nice. Longest I have done in my Asp is just shy of a month. I'm a bit more OCD with my scanning, though. I've started to not bother with ice and rock that isn't within range of the star now and won't supercruise more than 50k for a scan of anything else. Seems to be a nice balance for me.

Obviously it'd take me much longer than you, but I think I might head out on an expedition to the core.

Left a week before Horizons hit so doesn't have a vehicle hanger, probably just as well since with the minimal shielding the odds of taking damage from a landing accident are high.

As soon as you're outside the bubble (which should only take 4 or 5 jumps max) switch off your shields, cargo hatch, sensors and power distributor: you don't need them, and they just generate extra heat and use extra power. Turn off and on AFMUs as needed.

I've started to not bother with ice and rock that isn't within range of the star now and won't supercruise more than 50k for a scan of anything else. Seems to be a nice balance for me.

First time I jumped into a system and jumped out without even scanning the star it felt weird, after I'd done it a few times and travelled a thousand lightyears in ~30 minutes I wondered why I ever bothered doing anything else.

You just need to adopt different mindsets, one for travelling and one for exploring; when you're travelling then all that matters is covering ground as quickly as possible, when you're exploring then you can take the time to scan interesting systems. There are vast regions of space in the core totally untouched by explorers, chock-full of black holes, neutron stars, O-type stars and Wolf-Rayets, once you find one of them (and there are many) you won't worry about scanning asteroid belts and ice balls ;)

This trip took my total earnings from exploration to a bit over 4 billion CR, so I bought myself a Cutter :) Probably going to take a break from this game for a while, come back in a couple of months when 2.1 hits and have some fun with the new content.

Addendum: I should probably add that if you're planning a long trip then I highly recommend that you keep a log of some sort. It can be as simple as a pen and paper record of interesting systems, or a notepad file (which is what I did). Keeping a log really helps with maintaining focus and makes the trip feel like a journey rather than a chore (in my experience at least).

I've copy and pasted my complete log from my latest journey below (in spoiler tags, it was a long journey and therefore is a long log!). As you can see, I've kept a record of Wolf-Rayet systems I visited (which was the main aim of this trip, I enjoy cataloguing them) and also Earth-like planets, systems which I fully scanned and just any generally interesting/odd systems.

How did you plot your route? Just choose a direction and go?
Once in a system, did you discovery scan it and then visit each planet and scan the surface?
Finally, how did you track the systems? What produced your log? - soz just read your second post

Epic stuff tbh! Great work. I am contemplating doing it now in the ASP

If you dont like paper and pen and want a system that works with/alongside your game. Take a look at this little program Trade Computer Extension, There is a lot of other uses to this program and isnt one which is contributed by all elite players.
You start your DataBase from scratch, then you can add notes to a system for important stuff like, pristine rings star type etc. Also this program can save station commodities so you can quickly look for the best trade route in any location as long as you have been to the system and visited each station to then dl the commodities data.

I once gave mining a go, but it got boring pretty quickly for me. I think better use of limpets might have helped. May go back to it one day.

Pretty much, as long as you're heading in the direction of the core it's all good; there's a vast cloud of neutron stars and black holes located exactly 1K lightyears above and below the galactic plane which covers most of the core, this is where you want to spend most of your time.

The vast majority of systems I would just jump in, honk and scan the primary star.

You want most of your scans to be neutron stars and/or black holes since they're high value scans, but just grinding thousands of systems this way is mind-numbingly dull which is why I came up with the idea of scanning WR stars for variety. It really helps if you feel like you're going somewhere rather than just grinding, so I'd go from WR to WR by daisy-chaining a whole lot of NS/BH systems together on the way.
