*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Feeling better about my Premium Beta purchase now, I haven't played the game since launch....been waiting for it to be fleshed out a bit. Looks like the waiting is going to pay off :)

I couldn't afford Premium Beta, so only got the £50 Standard Beta one. Now I'm stuck paying almost the same amount every year, or a massive up-front sum for this lifetime pass.

I'd have been great if they offered SBers what the PB had, for about the same price difference, but it's all starting to feel a bit Chris Robertsey...

So am i right in thinking that the £29.99 price for current customers is time limited? So if for example I wanted to wait until we actually see some physical game play rather then a vague feature list I will be forced to pay £10 more? Because that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth if that is the case.

Am i also right in thinking that if i had never had purchased Elite in the first place i could pay £40 for the expansion and get the base game included in the price?

No idea.

Yes, you would pay around £10 for the original game, £30 for Horizons but in essence, get both for £40... But not be able to play until the release date, around December.

I think you are completely off the mark there, the store page lists this:

And as such that is what I expect (famous last words?) we shall get :)

Thats what i said though :confused:

Map uncharted worlds, dogfight in canyons, discover items and events you’ll only find on world surfaces.

Yep i mentioned that roughly.

DRIVING ON PLANETS
Embark on surface expeditions in all-terrain Surface Roving Vehicles (SRVs).

I mentioned that also

LOW LEVEL FLIGHT
Feel the subtle changes to the flight model when affected by gravity.

OK didnt mention that but tbh thought it wasnt major enough to mention.

FORTIFIED SETTLEMENTS
Attack and defend bases from ground or above.

When i mentioned >>>1.8 Surface Bases, Missions Powerplay integration. <<< i was meaning this (attacking defending bases etc)

PLAY WITH FRIENDS
Both above and on the ground in Wings, and participate in Powerplay and story events in unique ways. All expanding the depth of the galaxy.

Can already do this. Don't think this is a Horizon specific thing.

So i really dunno why you said i was way off the mark.

How can you wing with people on the ground already?

While I went for Premium Beta, and I'm very glad I did now, I do think £30 for this expansion seems rather high.

I am a tad jealous at those who managed to snag the Premium Beta (so including all expansions) But then i guess we didnt know what we know now...wise investment ;)

Watch you dont get lynched for saying that here :p

They are charging for landing on planets. F sake with milking this game. First it was 15 quid to be a beta player and i never really played it much at the last few weeks of beta. :/ You buy paint jobs, pff.. Its a £30+ game in the first place. They are treating this like MS Flight sim where u buy loads of addons for near a new game price.

Bloody ridiculous. Greedy thats all i can say is they are very greedy if this addon which should have been in the game really anyhow as its Elite, costs what i have read above.

Dont even really play it much and to try this new content which should be in the game and they want me to pay that much and i barely play the game in the first place. ...

Wanted to wait till it was more fleshed out is mainly the reason i dont play it much i mean i like the combat but i try not to do it too much otherwise id be bored of pretty much the only cool thing in the game to do which is where the fun bit is.

How will it be any different than in space? Wings functionality per se is in the game as of v1.2

Maybe its just me then who sees this as not a particularly new feature?

Well we don't know how it will be different from space, it was only just announced yesterday :)

Im intrigued with what they do with PL, but also apprehensive because i know their past history with not fleshing out other parts of the game (current exploring for example) but just down right dismiss the expansion as something that should have been in from the start seems odd.

I agree that maybe the expansion seems a bit costly, but WoW's last expansion is still £50 download and you still pay £10 a month. FD have to fund the game somehow, and through expansion is how it's down, same with GW2 etc.

Im still hoping for more 1.4 news today/tomorrow though, 1.4 (cqc aside) sounds like it could be a nice content update.

@maun Thats because you compare it to mmos, i dont i play alone so i treat it as a sp game so 1 game 1 price. When it came out it was very bare and still is. It was missing landing on planets and exploration but it got combat down well. Payed 1 price for frontier elite 2 and it had all that so why do we pay for expansions which arnt they are just delayed content that should have been in from the start really. This isnt suppose to be a game that has a quater of what it should be out on day 1 then charge ppl for the missing quaters later when they get made.

My view on it anyhow.

Making a game is a much more expensive and time consuming than it used to be.

We always knew planetary landing, amongst other things, was not going to be in the 1.0 release and was going to be a paid DLC.

Shouldnt have released it before they made all of what they wanted to do. Its like gta releasing just a small island with a few cars, then charging 30 quid for a larger area and more cars.

Yes games development is expensive but bah i just dont like how they went about it. I also think that what that exp pack has doesn't equal to that much content. So u can fly down to planets which is cool but theres probably nothing there. Just probably be able to go on moon type ones anyhow which is empty and maybe a small generic base if that. I doubt there's a earth type world where u can fly down to full of cities and culture with cars and planes whizzing all over and ppl walking u can shoot at. £30 for landing on moon types and a buggy, seems a bit much.

I've only been playing E: D in single player mode as I accumulate some skill and cash.

This £30/£40 upgrade looks like good value to me. I remember paying £30 for Microsoft's Crimson Skies which had aerial combat solo or online over simple landscapes.

Uhmm i didnt dismiss it or think it should have been in from the start

I play Elite all the time in the DK2. Im looking forward to the PL stuff. Just dont agree with the cost but in saying that i think FD will do a good job. Im not an explorer (i find navigation a tad difficult) so i dont experience some negative gameplay parts of Elite that perhaps other players do.

The other reason for the highish cost to the first paid DLC (we have got a fair amount of stuff just done as updates) is that FD are doing this on their own. Which big publisher is backing them? None afaik but i could be wrong. So they need money from somewhere. To my mind they had two options: given that Elite is somewhat successful now im sure they could have found a publisher to partner with for the paid dlc BUT perhaps they wanted to retain creative control on the direction of Elite so they come to US the players and fans of Elite. If we agree with their vision then we back them if we dont we dont and that is the end of Elite.

Yes and No. We knew it wasn't going to be in launch and we knew it was going to happen as a paid expansion. What we didn't know is that they would split it into 2 paid expansions not 1.
