*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

@maun Thats because you compare it to mmos, i dont i play alone so i treat it as a sp game so 1 game 1 price. When it came out it was very bare and still is. It was missing landing on planets and exploration but it got combat down well. Payed 1 price for frontier elite 2 and it had all that so why do we pay for expansions which arnt they are just delayed content that should have been in from the start really. This isnt suppose to be a game that has a quater of what it should be out on day 1 then charge ppl for the missing quaters later when they get made.

My view on it anyhow.

At the end of the day I agree (been quite vocal on official forums) that the game is an empty shell (got a good base to build on) Mining needs to be massively improved, and exploring is just a joke (point and fire, move on). The game always felt like it was rushed out too soon as well.

But it is an MMO (even if you play solo) so the expansion cost (personal opinion aside) matches other MMO's expansion cost's.

It's never been missing PL though, it was always a planned add-on, simple though.

Elite dangerous is a 10 year project.

COD anyone????

So its ok for Activision to release COD game every year at £50, but its a not ok for Frontier to charge £40 a year for Elite dangerous.

Same game different stuff, is that not what COD is?

You lucky we got the bloody game never mind about cost. David Braben is a very eccentric person, it was only kickstarter that gave him the faith to pursue his idea.

I don't play much, why? Because when I do the hours disappear fast and I have a family and the days of zoning out for 10-15 hours on a game are gone for me. :(

But in 7 years time daughter will have left home ED will be fully fledged and I will just retire in the world of ED! :p (on the oculus rift of course) ;)

I agree Itchy, no one kicks off about Battlefields season passes or the fact COD or FIFA are nearly the same games every year or even that WOW is paid sub AND you pay for the expansions, at least PL is adding something new to the game.

Again I do think the price is too expensive don't think many can argue against that, but I am a little lost as to how some people think FD can win. Yes they are out to make money but they are a games company trying to make a living?? They have ALWAYS stated that there will be some paid expansions and that Planetary Landings will be one of them. Saying that it should have been in the game because it was in earlier versions just doesn't make sense?? The game is made with up to date technologies and is now a partial mmo where it wasn't before amongst other changes. :) :)

Even from when the kickstarter was announce, their plan was always to have planetary Landings as a DLC. The charge for the future DLC has never been a secret or simply dropped on the unsuspecting player.

Sorry, I meant to specify that the list is what we will get upon Horizons release, not over the year as you think. Time will tell :)

Lynched? No, corrected as to what you are paying for, yes :p

Ohh i really hope i am wrong i really do! You do realize in 3 or 4 months time (or sooner if the devs release more detailed info on the schedule) if i'm right i will be right back here :p the video will be something like this:

You're wrong, I'll put money on it :p

Hi everyone,

As you can all imagine, it’s been a busy week here and I’m sure that you’re all as excited by the announcement for Elite Dangerous: Horizons as we are! We’ve been working hard on this release for some time now so it’s a good feeling to be able finally talk about it. I hope you’ll indulge me a little if I take this week’s dev update to talk more about the teaser trailer and what’s coming with the new Elite Dangerous: Horizons season, and the first expansion of that season, Planetary Landings.

This first expansion kicks off with the ability to land on airless planets and moons. It’s a great technical step forward, and more adds a huge amount of gameplay.

Gameplay extends seamlessly from space to the surface, so that you and your Wing can take a mix and match approach to tackling missions. It also adds new types of missions to engage in. Scanning planets and moons from space is used to detect signals, crashed ships, mineral deposits, outposts and fortresses. Playing alone or with friends on the ground and in the skies above, you can explore, mine and engage hostile forces as you attempt to infiltrate strongholds guarding valuable rewards.

While flying above the surface in Orbital Cruise you can discover points of interest like landed ships and surface installations. There will be star ports on the surface which can be docked at, although you can land anywhere on the surface that takes your fancy long as the terrain is appropriate, all without loading screens or breaks in gameplay.

As you approach the planet surface the effect of gravity kicks in and changes the flight model and so giving you a new set of flying skills to master. And the 1:1 scale planets and moons take our fantastic simulation to a new level, allowing you to swoop though canyons and skim mountain-tops.

For closer interaction you can deploy a Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV) and drive to locations to discover new points of interest. The SRV allows you to get to places where your ship can’t and to interact with new elements for mining, exploration, combat and missions. This really extends the scale of the game downwards to something more human-sized – and you can appreciate how big even a Sidewinder is compared to the SRV, and how truly huge the planets are.

The first SRV is the Scarab that you see at the end of the teaser trailer. The Scarab is designed to cross the roughest terrain and has some very cool features, such as thrusters to help jump gulleys and surmount obstacles. The thrusters are also very useful for pushing you down onto the surface in low gravity environments, to give you grip where you need it.

Of course its a lot of fun just to blast round, explore and just take in the views, but again it’s both a new set of skills to learn and gameplay possibilities to integrate with the rest of Elite Dangerous. SRVs are very small, and difficult to track by flying spacecraft, and enable you to tackle some of the fortifications you’ll find planetside in a different way from what you can do in a spaceship.

There is a lot for even the most experienced pilots to get their teeth into, and of course there’s also the simple joy in being on the surface and watching the sun rise above the horizon (hence the name!). I’m looking forward to seeing the incredible new screenshots people will be able to share.

As with our previous major updates, the Elite Dangerous: Horizons season of content is more than just the headline features. We will also continue to expand and build upon what is already in game. This will include missions, player roles and events in the galaxy, and many other features we have not yet discussed.

Some of these additions will be exclusive to Elite Dangerous: Horizons’ season owners (and if you have the lifetime expansion pass then you of course get it automatically). Others may be more fundamental, or are needed for the whole player-base so will be available to all players.

Throughout the season there will be major updates adding features and content. One example, which we will be talking more about in the near future, is a new loot and crafting system which again we expect to transform the gameplay experience.

For now this is just a quick dip into what’s coming. We’ll reveal more details as we progress.

We have always been very clear about our intentions for paid major gameplay updates like this as we continue to deliver on our roadmap, and so developing the game towards our long term goals. And in 2015 we still have CQC to release on PC and Mac in September alongside the full Xbox release, and a further update at the time of Elite Dangerous: Horizons’ launch that will bring our total of playable ships up to 30!

What we are doing is new in many ways, both technically and in terms of how we are realizing our long term ambitions for Elite Dangerous. As we evolve the game we are trying to give the best value we can to both existing and new players, for the long term benefit of everyone. That’s why we’ve worked hard to keep backwards compatibility for the Elite Dangerous: Horizons season, and are continuing to release updates for ‘season one’ players. Everyone will continue to fly in the same galaxy, and be impacted by, participate in and help to drive the same events.

well if you are right it means :

1.6 Everything at launch (including looting and crafting?)
1.7 Unknown
1.8 Unknown
1.9 Unknown

But i'll believe it when i see it. Sometimes FD devs and PR tend to over hype the game.

Heres an interesting post if people want to get a summary of what the "problems" are with Elite

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=172843

I agree with most of what he has said in your linked post. There's several different things to do but none of them are anywhere near as developed as they could be and there's a lot of room for Frontier to do more. But instead they've gone for new content.

They've tried to bridge the gap between a Massively Multiplayer game and a single player game and ended up somewhere in the middle. Sadly this place has no real advantages to either side so feels a bit like the Korean DMZ. Not much there and so much danger/potential on both sides if you go one way or the other. Piracy and/or bounty hunting should be a viable career choice as the other linked threads show but at the moment it feels like a nice clean shiny new coat of paint but once that starts flaking off you see the poor undercoat.

Just this at launch as I have already said...
INTRODUCING ALL-NEW PLANETARY LANDINGS GAMEPLAY
PLANETARY LANDINGS
Elite Dangerous: Horizons launches with the eagerly-awaited planetary landings on countless 1:1 scale worlds.
GAME-CHANGING CONTENT
Map uncharted worlds, dogfight in canyons, discover items and events you’ll only find on world surfaces.
DRIVING ON PLANETS
Embark on surface expeditions in all-terrain Surface Roving Vehicles (SRVs).
LOW LEVEL FLIGHT
Feel the subtle changes to the flight model when affected by gravity.
FORTIFIED SETTLEMENTS
Attack and defend bases from ground or above.
PLAY WITH FRIENDS
Both above and on the ground in Wings, and participate in Powerplay and story events in unique ways. All expanding the depth of the galaxy.

If looting and crafting comes with it I'll be surprised, but the rest being unknown, yes :)

There's a lot of problems with elite, they do not however outweigh the pro's in my opinion which is why I'm still playing and can see me playing for a long time to come :D

I still play this game, but I have cut back on the hours i put into it, the link that Surfer posted is spot on. And I really hope they do flesh the base game out a lot more (im sure they will). Id like to see quicker updates (only 3 so far since December) and 2 more planned before end of the year.

Im looking forward to PL though (hoping there's so much to do on the planets).

How exactly does this expansion work with regards multiplayer?
If I interdict another human player near a planet, he has the expansion and I don't. If I am chasing him, what happens if he flies into the atmosphere of the planet?
Does he magically disappear and I crash into the planet, or is there some free crossover point (a bit like Arma3 where the DLC assets are there for free, but you get a low quality version instead)?

From what has been said it looks like you will just not be able to follow them, I really don't see it being an issue at all often though and will choose to see it as an issue of the interdictor not having a ship capable of dealing with the extra gravitational stresses applied by close proximity to the planet, would be even cooler if they actually added a structural module you had to buy before being able to land, that way they could just deny non owners the module and make them get torn to shreds on the way down :D

I'd thought of this too! whether they'll make you buy specialised landing gear so you can land on a planet, or if you're landing somewhere with an atmosphere - what about crosswinds and stuff?

I say this as an A10C DCS addict, and landing in challenging conditions is a game in itself, I imagine the rage of people learning to land in their 200Mcr anacondas!

Atmospheric entry, flight and landings are going to be awesome stuff, I really hope ship profiles and wing area make extreme differences when we eventually get it, and that is said as an old IL2 addict lol.

Apparently the atmospheric stuff will come in a later update, so this is airless bodies only... but they did say a later update for atmospheric based stuff..

it'll make landing a type-9 full of gold, a whole heap of fun!

I don't think weather events will ever be part of the simulation. Maybe of the animation but no crosswind, rain, ice darts, ammonia balls of fire or what the heck you can imagine existing in a randomly generated floating rock.

A seamless transition from no air to yes air, plus gravity and your own mass and velocity (a vector basically). That is the atmospheric landing we'll have somewhere during 2016 AFAIK.

Yes, very aware that atmospheric stuff is not coming any time soon, that's fine with me, I really do hope that weather does make it in though, not much point in the atmospheric stuff coming so much later if it is without any weather conditions :)
