*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Well...it's installed and off I go!

Any beginner tips? :p

Options, stare at the screen & drive yourself nutty (nuttier?) until you've set all binds to how you want them. Sounds daft, but I've known folk still setting & changing them only to crash when they've changed something haha.

Do the tutorials. And then do them again if you still don't feel sure.
Apparently they're really improved since they were first released.

Always, always make sure you've got enough money to insure your ship. Pressing 4 will open that UI, insurance cost is below your overall money.
Sidewinder at start (if I recall) is always free, but nothing is after that & you don't want to have to start all over again ;)

If you want to group with anyone you know in the area but don't trust random players, you can make your own private group.

Erm, tbh it's been sooo long since I started, youtube is probably better for "I bought it now wtf?" hints hehe.

Welcome to space CMRD o7

P.S. You can only change your name by deleting your save & starting over, so pick wisely ;)

Don't spend anything on upgrades until you feel you have a good grasp of how the basics work, the base sidewinder is free to replace, take full advantage of it for at least a few hours.

@Dis86 When you've mastered flying around etc and are ready to mod your FSD I'll happily provide you with the Soontil Relics necessary if you want (look up Engineers and Elvira Martuuk).

Thanks. I'll let you know!

Key mapping ongoing. The initial controls are just poop!

So many keys to remember...voice attack is the shizzle for this. Shouting 'landing gear' in a panic when you've forgotten, rather than looking for the correct bound key = the win.
A guy called David Hess has the most nasally voice you can imagine but has a selection of youtube videos that have helped me immensely in doing Powers and Engineers. Also a how to start off and make money tips.

Just get the basics mapped and add others as and when needed, there is no need to map everything at once.

I'll second this & Voice Attack. There are some fun voice packs for Voice Attack with ED profiles at https://www.hcsvoicepacks.com/ for money; but of course you can just create your own in VA. However, it is more than possible to pilot with just a keyboard imho though I did find it a lot easier to use my gaming mouse's buttons as throttle etc (turning the ship etc by moving the mouse pointer being disabled).

Well happen to have a hotas setup. Been doing the training missions a few times just to get used to the controls and I'm really enjoying it!

Excellent, now to stick with the starter sidewinder for a while as it's free to replace every time so you can make as many mistakes as you please. Mistakes later in other ships will cost money.

The world (well, galaxy) is your oyster. Do you want now. Mine, trade, bounty hunt, grind for rep, explore the galaxy.

Yep. I'd also say don't binge to do stuff, unless it's a community goal. I get far more enjoyment jumping in and out… things are only a grind if you make them and ED/Frontier is meant to be a game you don't 'complete' in 24 hours.

The game does open up with the better ships and upgrades.
I would pick a faction, Empire / Federation then make a home base. I went Empire and made wu guinagi my home. I than ran missions to bring in some money and rank up my character. Ship wise if your doing missions I would go Type 6 and then a Python. Take your time and enjoy the game.

I did the loop between these two places & went from starter to Duke in 3-4 days.

HIP 10716 and
Wu Guinagi
Distance: 11.9 ly

Used a Courier & sometimes a type6. Type6 meant I could still do the message quests but also any cargo quests to make up for when there were few message quests.
There's also a scan planet type too, which means SRV to farthest planet in one of those systems. Makes for a change of scenery once in a while.

Someone in game recommended FEHU other day, but never been there.

Quince is easy mode for rep & monies. Grab quests from Millersport, fly to planet in a suicide sidey/eagle or anything cheap. Scan & commit Sudoku.
If do it in open, anyone scanning in area can also count towards your scans, saving you a landing.

That's just awful advice, while it might work why bother playing if you are just going to cheat the system?
