I love how this game doesn't hand hold at all, but this is ridiculous:
Engineers:
I need to find 1 meta alloy for felicity someone. 'In game' absolutely no idea where to start. Googling, it used to be you buy it from one outpost for 100k. This, I have no found out, is no longer the case. You need to get them from alien barnacles.
How would I know that?
How would I know where to look for barnacles?

Again, after much research online, I've found some planets and co-ordinates of some that I can try. The first one took ages to track down as the coords on planet are hard to navigate by when travelling a a few kilometres a second.
Still, I found it, but.... it was guarded by a capitol class ship. When I went near the barnacle, all hell broke loose so I scooted off and left it.
The second one took just as much time to track down (as I'm typing, I'm now thinking I may need a planetary ground scanner thing which I've never used before..) and literary a few seconds after 30 minutes searching I scraped the ground in my Asp and broke my canopy... there then followed a hectic race to the nearest station to repair (safe to say I touched down with 37 seconds of air remaining).

I now can't be bothered going back to start again but that means the engineer is blocked...

TLDR: Engineers are hard and Elite doesn't help.

Edit: Oh and I've started playing this in VR and it's sublime. I've been out in High Res sites zipping in and out of asteroids having a whale of a time backed up by the feds, shooting pirates :)

I purchased the game during the Summer sale... or was it Xmas? Anyhow, installed it went in it, found everything crazy complicated. Never fired the game again. I will do that when I am between jobs and can dedicate 24/7 to the game so I can start playing it. I also got Starpoint Gemini 2 as it was for free. More tempted to play that one for now:P

Well...im now landing at stations like a boss. Done quite a few of the data transfer missions but struggling with any of the others right now. Slowly getting to grips with navigation.

Anyone know how to get the fsd active more quickly when you're stuck on the far side of a planet to any navigatable point? I had to fly for about 15 mins just to get clear so I could make my.jump last night

sounds like you needed to use super cruise first? Were you actually planet bound when you started?
You start by boosting away from the surface then switch to super cruise, when you're far enough away you can jump to another system.

Yeah. Id just collected some canisters from the surface. It took 15 mins of boost to get sufficiently clear although maybe my mistake was I didn't go straight up?

Partially, but you need to engage super cruise to get away from the planet and then jump, in the control bindings (Flight Miscellaneous) there are two separate entries for super cruise and hyperspace jump, be default they are blank iirc and both work from the J button assigned to Toggle frame shift drive which means you cannot go to super cruise with another system targeted.

The differences in speed: you were probably boosting in metre per second. Supercruise will do kilometers per second (up to several times the speed of light which is hundreds of thousands of KM per second), then you have you Jump drive which is instantaneous moving from one system to another over lightyears per second (silly fast and basically teleporting to the destination but with a 'loading screen' of twirling lights)

Aye I Was, I couldn't go any faster though and couldn't get supercruise to engage as I was mass locked until I was at about 70km altitude. By which point I could engage my jump.

Could have been a bug perhaps? You should be able to supercruise pretty early on (and yes, going straight up helps :))

I was bounty hunting in a high res area last night (in VR) when I stupidly picked a fight with a 3 man wing. All of them tore me a new one. i was running away and 2 missiles came at me. i realised i didn't have my point defence on so switched to the console view to turn it back on. I turned back around to the front of the ship and flew straight into an asteroid. Losing an hours worth of bounties :(
And don't forget this was in VR so it really was an asteroid in front of me, made me exclaim a little in surprise.

You should be clear to enter Cruise from just past 2km altitude... assuming you go straight up. From there it's maybe 30 seconds until you start clearing the planet and getting up to Mm speeds for in-system crusing.

Jumping direct to another system should be possible from above the 2km mass lock altitude, so long as your line of sight is clear enough.

Was going at about 45 degrees. I'll try again tonight. Was so annoying!

Might have just had unusualy high gravity, or been one big-ass planet with hoofing great mass lock... There are a few like that.
It was a big mother of a planet. Should be able to find it again so I'll test tonight. Definitely starting to enjoy the game more as I learn more. Pirate hunting is next on my list of things to try.

As you will know by now, there are alien ruin planets near Maia, they updated one of the smaller sites to have a ship and drones protecting it.

The larger alien ruin site near Maia is the one that you want (with about a dozen barnacles). It has no protection or guards.

Any recommendations for places to grind some Empire rank. I hear Wu Guinagi, Fehu and Quince mentioned a lot.

It depends on the state of the system. Check the system state beforehand. War or Civil war for the controlling faction in any of those systems and you are good to go.

If none of the systems are good then try data courier missions in Aditi, it is slower than the above for sure but more reliable.
