*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I think the icing on that clip was that it appears like it lit up the cockpit letters just as they impacted with the ground just to rub in the message of "dont die" even more :D

For anyone tempted to head out there, nearest station I've found is:
HIP 16813
Sisters' Refuge.
Has large landing pads & is one of the new asteroid stations.

Found a lovely star last night. Listed as a brown dwarf but was a lovely banded swirling purple.

Also now a mostly harmless, scout, dealer!

I have given a name to my pain, and that name is Modified Embedded Firmware (MEF).

I thought I'd take a break from Empire ranking at Wu Guinagi and take the plunge on getting some MEF (thank the gods it isn't Modified Unified Firmware), because after all, who DOESN'T want large overcharged multi cannons with effects on their ship? Cue much researching on the forums on obtaining the stuff which should have been my first warning, noticing the size of the threads. Anyway, stick to medium security settlements as I don't want to be dodging hostile skimmers and defences. Unperturbed I set off and found what I thought was a suitable base, cue much switching between the game and IE to try and get a map view of the base I'm at and where the data points are. Blast it, I can't seem to find the base type. Blast it, what the hell do all those icons on the maps mean, there isn't a key. Its ok, I'll just drive around and find the points...(after about 10 mins)...blast it. Maybe I need a smaller base to start with so back to the online resources, find a medium settlement and off I go. I land, find a map, even manage to work out which icons on the map are data points (small green circles btw) and after doing a recce run manage to scan them all in the time limit. Blast it, no MEF dropped but after reading about the drop rate not entirely unexpected. Read up a little more on the forums and it seems the greater drop rates are at the large base types so its back to the ED community resources to determine medium security large base types with zero threat levels, whereupon I find one and head off to it. Now I'm running round this thing trying to find the data points, even following the map overview I can only find three of the five and doing it in the time limit will be a challenge. I think I need to find a more convenient base type to hone my skills a little.

TL;DR MEF is a PITA, these G5 upgrades better be worth it

Welp, that's bizarre.

Bored of waiting for Thargoids to appear, I pottered off to Sister's Refuge again to pick up a different ship, then had a brain wave.
There's a gazillion rocks floating right around the station, easy mode mining! :D

For some weird reason, any time I'm trying to mine things the game will alt tab me out after anything from a couple of minutes to roughly 15 max & I can't alt tab back in. Have to close it via task manager. Costing me a fortune in limpets (which can't buy locally...) & patience.

Tried going to different (actual mining) area with same results.
Rest of the game works fine, but for some reason I just can't seem to last long before it bugs out on me when mining.

Done an uninstall/reinstall of gpu drivers, verified files via ED launcher, no change :(

P.S. Limpets are dumb as...

I had this issue in other games a couple of years ago and it was down to a process that was hogging the screen and the only way to stop it was to kill that process. Took me ages to find what was doing it but with some patience I got there.

I'll keep peepers on processes, got a good rainmeter skin that could help with that too (lazy mode :p).
Seems odd though, only happens when in that area, even when just sat in the station.
Reported it anyway, they recommended re-doing gfx drivers, had already beaten them to that hehe.

Oh, as for mining. I thought the station being in same area would ease life as I could just flit there, sell stuff & head back to it.
Turns out the profits aren't remotely worth it. Think I may just space/abandon the (lower end) ores once refined hehe.

Have any of you been to an asteroid station? It's stunning & nerve wrecking heading to one.
Flying at super speed right next to the rings of some planet, leaving cruise to enter station area & first thing you see is a huge wave of rocks right in front of your nose

not been on in months but just incase the game takes off again i will beta test and get the free decal, maybe things will improve in the upcoming season. I hope so.

Took me ages to find out how to even access the beta.
Search online, found nothing. Searched Reddit, ED forums, nothing.
Alt tabbed & noticed the launcher had a scroll bar next to the ED/Horizons options.

D'Oh!

I backed the game from alpha stage and initially the game seemed to be everything i wanted. But then the direction of the game seemed IMO to lose its way and the `shell` as named by Braben hasnt really been added to in terms of game play.

I have limited hopes for the 2.4 season and hope core game mechanics become much more immersive.

Been listening to some old Lave radio bits. Braben mentions about going to gas giants to do things, although obviously not too deep as you'd just die.
Hopefully that comes into being.
I know atmospheric planets sounds great, but I imagine it'd be hard, what with water physics etc, can't expect planets to be barren, can they?
Trees perhaps going overboard, would melt my system ;)

As for this beta...

"Help stress test networking and physics at the ancient site on Planet 1B in the Synuefe XR-H D11-102 system. To prove you were there please pick up and deliver one ancient item to No Moon in Synuefe XR-H D11-102."

Same problem as every other time. There's nothing to loot as someone already looted them & worse, you're to take them to the station, which means anyone on ground will never find any. Had to go solo to grab a couple.
Tearing around on an SRV was a giggle, despite how slightest pebble sends you spinning as per usual. Good job this won't cost my normal account :D

Haven't signed up for the other mission.
Have to mine one unit of Samarium. See if it's the mining that's crashing the game for me, as not had a crash since quit trying to mine.

There isn't really a 2.4. It will be released in chunks as story elements require and there also won't be any 'new' features like multicrew with the dev team concentrating on improving the core game. So I'm guessing for the rest of this year we'll get some new types of planet to 'land on' (gas giants maybe) and an overhaul perhaps of mining and the like.

So...i seem to be in a bit of a kerfuffle. I sold my starter ship and now have what I think is the first federation mission which seems to require a suv which...i no longer have as I never really used it at all. Is there a way to tell if a mission requires one beforehand? All it said was go to x and investigate the data.

If the mission has the blue horizons logo, then it means you will need to go on a planet. Not sure if they specify SUV though.
