In the left hand panel that lists all the system bodies and systems within jump range it will list them as High/Low Intensity Resource Extractions Site iirc, they will only show when you are fairly close to them, I can't remember what the specific range is. As Surfer said, look (open the system map) for rings systems around planets, metal/metal rich ones are the ones with extraction sites, ice rings will not have them, unsure about rocky ones.

You trade illegal goods by either being fast, or being sneaky. Unless you're very good and get good with Silent running you'll likely get scanned and fined but the fines usually are small compared to the reward.

The hotas X is fine. Add more controls/etc with development boards and bits of old controllers.

Once you understand the basics of this you can do some pretty crazy stuff. It's also quite possible to have a 3D printing place "scan" a part in so you can edit it. Handily the hotas X flight stick comes apart in 3 pieces so adding more stuff to it isn't hard. Most of the 3D printing places have offers on fairly often so you can get stuff done cheaply. (basically, take the flight stick apart, sound scary but isn't, have a 3D printing place scan each part and give you the plans back, there's then plenty of software around to edit/tweak these scanned parts to make room for more controls, get the part printed, rebuild the stick with the added part).
If you want to go crazy, here's how to do 6 axis and lots of buttons using MMjoy and an arduino pro micro (£9, a PSP1000/2000 thumb slide can be got for £1 each. So in total adding/making 3 thumbsticks can be done for about £15 all in - you just need to work out where/how to mount it):

There's some awesome stuff you can build with a bit of 3D printing. I don't want to be making out my "extra controls" plate is something amazing by keep posting images but if you go back a few pages you'll see a picture of it. Agreed with Mercutio. Even without adding home made addons, the HOTAS X is fine for ED. Fantastic joystick/throttle against the price, they could quite easily get away with charging more imo.

Yeah, while more buttons and axis would be nice, using Voice Attack makes the Hotas X pretty much perfect.

IF it is a Low/High one, it will say in the left UI panel, first tab.
Otherwise, if it's a normal one it'll just say Resource Extraction Site.
I use that occasionally when I want to show off, but I just found it took longer to say stuff than press the buttons.
Nice thing about voiceattack is that you can also assign command feedback in the form of basically whatever you want. When i say "SHIELDS UP!" i get Pavel Chekov saying back to me "Shields at maximum"
Theres tons more you can do if you have the time and creativity.Theres a trek site which has tons of sound clips (wav i think) to check out.
I hope Saitek/Madcatz sort out their Windows 10 drivers soon (last I heard was they were 3-4 weeks away) as my X52 doesn't play nicely atm.

If you enable verbose logging, you can then look in your log file, without that set though - Don't think so.

Ok So i've now got my Thrustmaster HOTASX.
I think I've got most of it set up...However throttle seems to be either on 110%/off. or reverse. I have no linear control.
What do i need to change.
Also I've added a couple of .binds to the bindings folder but non seem to be showing in control presets

I hear the FDL doesn't turn all that well, especially in the pitch department. I hear it's more of a lateral thrust kind of ship. I've come from a Clipper so might take a bit of getting used to.
