*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Wasn't the original along similar lines, though...?
You have a bunch of stuff you can do and the rest is down to your own imagination...?

Ahh yes imagination. Dont have X type of content no worries boys thats what your imagination is for! :D

This isnt 1984 i dont think we should using the original Elite on the BBC Micro as the yardstick that Elite Dangerous should measure up to...this is 2015 after all. We should be comparing it with other open world games...the Witcher 3, GTA V, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, the X series of space sims.

So how do you think it compares to those games?

Horizions is an expansion pack.
So just like WoW, Eve and all those others, you buy the base game and then buy the expansions. I've not played those myself, but the pricing structure is apparently about the same.
Unlike all the others, Elite doesn't have an additional subscription fee.

Except that Elite is nothing like WoW or Eve or just about any genuine MMO out there. If you want i could start listing very basic MMO features that just about all MMOs have but Elite doesnt.

ohh ok go on then.

I took the plunge and bought ED and a T-Flight HOTAS X last night. Spent hours flying around trying to get the hang of it :D

I think I need to have a read through a few guides and work out what sort of path I want to forge for myself before I get too far along though.

You wont regret it :D

I stated off trading the little space I had on my Sidewinder but knowing what I know now, I would have found a res with good security cover and snipe and scoot to pick up bounties.... (hiding behind rocks helps :)

Whilst I love ED. I just cant help but feel that the biggest bread earner in this game is the RES sniping.

Am I wrong in my comments above?

Yes, Trading = Winnar.
6~7 mill an hour.

Trading is the main bread winner is you have the equipment and the routes.

However in the beginning its a little bit difficult. I spent weeks getting money trading and courier missions. However once I had a decent load out on my Sidewinder, RES activity was how I sped up my ship and equipment acquisitions..... Now I can do pretty much what I want. Most of the time doing RES work and missions. I have a fully kitted out Vulture.

Something like the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS is more my budget, I do love the look of that Warthog though!
Save up and get a top end one.
I thought I'd only ever need the FLY5... When it became apparent I'd be playing this for years to come and that having every control at my fingertips made for a much better experience, I started putting the pennies away.

I was just fortunate that I got to try a lot of different sticks at friends' places first.

I love a good quote war.
Ohhhhhhh no you don't.......

Everyone keeps saying that, but no-one ever comes up with what it should have... unless it's, "Make it like Eve Online"! :D

So what should it be?
Rich Solo campaign like Sqn 42?
400 billion systems worth of narrative, unique to every one of the myriad players?
Full-on MMO stuff?

For the record, those MMOs I have played were pretty much the same - Go here, fight this, go there, fight that, bit of story text fluff to make it seem like you're doing the same few missions over and over... rinse, repeat, pay subs, repeat.

We should be comparing it with other open world games...the Witcher 3, GTA V, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, the X series of space sims.
All of which are pretty tiny, aren't they?
ED is just the base platform and already it has a massive load of stuff over and above all those. It takes time to get 400 billion versions of things all set up. We have this very basic version because we wanted ED now.

So how do you think it compares to those games?
I tried getting into The Witcher but got bored. I did just about everything in Skyrim in under 160 hours. Not played the others.
By comparison, I've got a good 1,300 hours plus on just ED so far.

Except that Elite is nothing like WoW or Eve or just about any genuine MMO out there.
Well DUHHHHH.... Elite is not an MMO.
It may have an online multiplayer aspect, but it is not an MMO.

PLENTY of other, non-MMO games also have expansions. Look at X-Plane, for example. Same thing there. Isn't there a half-hour long add-on for the latest Metal Gear costing something like £45, anyway?

If you want i could start listing very basic MMO features that just about all MMOs have but Elite doesnt.
Knock yourself out.....

I find I get more money out of missions rather than RES sitting, yeah its probably down to where you are I guess, some routes are good, some RES spots are good, it changes...

Well as a new starter I took the first mission available which was transporting 3 slaves and got myself 74k credits which I spent on an eagle.

But now I'm poor again with just over 1000 left.

I seem to be flying around aimlessly at the moment.

Get some more trading done, get your Eagle kitted out better and then hit a Low intensity RES or hang around near a systems Nav Beacon and scan everyone coming through for a Wanted Status.
