Spend a few quid on D's then. Won't cost much, but it'll save a fair bit of weight and probably give you all the agility you need. I used to run A grade thrusters on mine, but it was overkill really, D was as much as it needed for RES work.

I'm loving this game! Well worth dropping a few £ on a hotas.

Only been at it a few hours, already got myself an Adder and put a few upgrades on it. I'm doing trade missions from the BB and a few of my own trade runs at the moment to get some more upgrades on before starting life as a pirate.

I'm also tempted to get a new monitor, been looking at a 1080p 21:9 - anyone got one who can give an opinion compared to say a 27" ?

I love my LG , 2560x1080 and I love the extra screen space at the sides and it works really well in every game with a couple of exceptions. Most cutscenes are still 16:9 so the edges go black but in game you have full screen, unstretched. Some games work perfectly in game but then have issues afterwards. For example BF4 has the after game chat box with part of it off screen as the leaderboard is still 1080p so you get the bars but the chat box is still a set distance from the edge of the screen. I'm surprised they haven't fixed that yet. Even older stuff like Batman Arkham Asylum works though. I would recommend it but G/free sync 21:9's are here or coming but still very expensive. Most Ultrawide monitors still only support 60Hz. It is great for movies though, full screen, no borders.

1080p at 27" is merely 'alright', whether 16:9 or 21:9.
If you've never had a large 1080 monitor, it will look fairly awesome... right up until you see the same game in 27" at 1440p. Then you'll realise the shortcomings.

It doesn't look all bad, but 24" is probably about the optimum for 1080, before it starts to look a bit pants again.
If you have the money, go 1440. But if not, 1080 will still be pretty good.

And yes, I'm still in 27" 1080p myself! :)

Not really the place for advice on monitors but ah well. I would say it is deffo worth looking at the cheaper 27" 1440p IPS screens. A basic tn 1080 would be a lot cheaper but if you are bothering to get a new monitor then IPS is very much worth it, and if you have stepped up the cost that much it really isn't that much more for a 27" and the difference is huge!

Personally I play elite on an ultra wide 34" Samsung and it is view perfection.... Especially for this game!

To be fair this game is one of the main reasons I'm buying one...

On the game front I've just had my first death, tried to collect a bounty on some pirates and had my *** handed to me by 5 of them and the 3 system authority ships I accidentally caught in the crossfire :D

A little tip on bounty hunting a big group or a powerful ship.
If you hit them and then run away and hide and let the system authority ships kill them you still seem to get the bounty*

* may need warrant scanner for that to apply

But may also earn you a bounty if they're not Wanted in that particular system. As a result, Authority ships won't finish the job, but they and your target(s) may instead come chase you down.

I also believe (but may be wrong) that you don't get the kill count added to your combat ranking.

Having just fired it up last night for a proper go, I'm finding it REALLY hard to play. I don't have a stick so have to use the mouse and keyboard. Really difficult. Not sure even how to play it. Any beginner tips in terms of buying stuff and any general overall tips that you would recommend?

I don't remember Elite on my BBC B+ being as hard to play :p

I only bounty hunt wanted ships.

I think you may also have to still have them targetted. I've won loads of bounties as ive been turning around to chase when not firing. Or when I'm getting beaten so I'm running off to recuperate.

However since loading my Viper with a turreted beam laser and a turreted multi cannon with another 2 gimbled cannons I can destroy sidewinders in about 20sec unless they are well piloted. and often run out of ammo without my shields moving from 100% after fighting cobras, vipers, dropships etc.

not been up against anything proper yet. I'm sure I'll get bested soon enough

This sounds stupid but how do I get permission to dock? Even in tutorials I get the "2 mins to leave or I die" :(

Left hand panel, third tab (contacts), highlight the station and press select, you'll get the option to request docking permission, select that when you are less that 7.5km from the station/outpost. I'd strongly suggest doing the tutorials.

If you have a 360 controller kicking around it is awesome for this game. I rarely have to use the mouse of keyboard in-game.

It's ideal for those who don't want to invest in a HOTAS.

Yep I absolutely hated it before I used the 360 pad. Imo keyboard/ mouse simply does not work and will only leave you infuriated.

I'd suggest using a 360 or even cheap wired pad for the tutorials (even if you've already done them), play for a bit then consider whether you want to go for a stick.

Had an odd encounter last night where another player interdicted me, attempted to steal my empty cargo bay, lost shields then proceeded to ram me using his cobra, until killing himself.......
