*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

From a video I watched earlier today a guy revisited odyssey in vr and one thing he said was improved lighting details, only did the pancake for walking about, in vehicles was all vr.

You can play odyssey in vr. I do. It's stunning.
Just know that it pancakes when you go on foot.
Also change the graphics preset to VR high/ultra.
Runs really well.

Considering getting back into this, I'm an early backer so have horizon and Odyssey is one preferred over the other.

I only play in vr if it makes any difference.
For the majority of people, Odyssey runs noticeably worse in VR than Horizons did, with no obvious graphical upside. It's much improved since the original botched release, and it's definitely playable, but I still get much smoother gameplay in legacy Horizons.

However, to answer the question about "which to play?": Frontier have split the galaxy into "Legacy" (the old Horizons codebase) and Odyssey/Horizons 4.0 with the new Odyssey codebase. All ongoing galaxy events will be in Odyssey/Horizons 4.0 only, so I'd suggest you play the latest version unless you have serious performance problems and don't care about taking part in the Thargoid invasion and other ongoing stories.

I just started a few nights ago and had to call in the Fuel Rats when I inadvertently stranded myself without a fuel scoop.

Lovely chaps. The guy even hung around answering questions and making sure I knew what I was doing before he went on his way.

nice. did he still have the pin for it (back in the day everyone who got to elite qualified for a metal badge)

Folks... its been such a long time since I played Elite... is it worthwhile to get back into?
E: LOL same question above I see :D
it has its flaws but if you can enjoy what there is rather than lament about what has been cut from the plan then absolutely. there is a lot to enjoy..... but it could have been so much more

Tomorrow i am probably going to embark on my first Gaudian site to get my self the Guass Cannons unlocked
as i want now build my 2nd anti-xeno ship, which is for Interceptors

let me know if anyone is interested, it would be quicker with more players id imagine

good point
seen few guides and video guides over time, saw another tonight, they didn't mention solo tonight

ill have another look tomorrow so i know what im doing

cheers

the diamond back is a good ship for guardian sites (nice and small easy to land) and put at least 1 possibly 2 point defence systems on the top of your ship, it protects you from the guardian missiles if you land close enough.
(this is from memory I have not visited them in a few years - I need to go back actually the only blue print I have is the FSD booster. I would like to try the ship launched fighters and also want to build a thargoid hunter

Enjoy! The very first time can feel a bit "WTF am I doing?", but once you know where all the pillars are, and also the trigger points for the Guardian sentinels, then it's a walk in the park.

A couple of points which may or may not have been covered in the guides you watched:

1) Make sure you have materials to synth ammo for the SRV. You only need low-level mats, but you will definitely need to synth more ammo if you're doing multiple runs. Which you should be. See point 2.

2) Get as many blueprints as you can. It's a long flight, and while the basic Guardian weapons are standard unlocks (one blueprint + mats to unlock, then you can buy as many as you want for credits), the Salvation-enhanced weapons need a blueprint for every single weapon you buy. Most of the work is flying there and back, so make the most of it while you're there.

3) Figure out what weapons you may want to try, and how many of them you'll need, then use Inara to calculate what components you'll need. You don't want to come home a few Technology Components short of a full build
