*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Quick note, took a good 15 mins to setup the controls with my new CH Fighterstick. I'd initially tried the game with an Xbox controller (old one). The CH is simply massively easier to deal with and has buttons gallore on it. Highly recommended.

I haven't played ED for about 3 months.

I'd really appreciate a quick 'heads up' to get me up to speed.

Trade - I assume little has changed, grind, use tools to max profit

Combat - All about shield cells, etc, is combat logging still so common ?
Are turrets still rubbish ?

PowerPlay - any advice in terms of getting the 'merits' or whatever they are called ? If I want combat in terms of killing 'enemy' factions, how does it work, where do I have to go etc.

In terms of experience, I have a python equipped with some good kit, so whilst I put in loads of hours I haven't played at all for some time.

Many thanks

finally picked up the game and last night was my first time playing it.

I watched a view guides, including the official tutorial videos and jumped in to the tutorials to get a feel for things.
I'm currently using a mouse and keyboard as I wanted to be sure I was going to like the game before investing into a hotas set up.

First thing I learnt is that the tutorial doesn't cover some of the real basics, but that's fine...a look around the options and I found the key bindings and whilst there I adjusted the deadzone and sensitivity on the mouse which helped.

The tutorials were worth doing and helped but were hard to follow at times - the navigation one wasn't overly clear but trial and error got it sorted.

I did up the basic combat and the wingman one and thought that's enough for now and jumped into game.

First problem was controlling the UI screens, I figured out how to switch screens but missed how to select and option (space bar) and then couldn't figure out how to switch pages at the top....thinking it was tab resulted in me boosting into things (oops!) and then realised I'd miss read the key bind and its was E to switch Tabs (and not tab to switch panel!) d'oh!

Great, all figured and I even found a nice easy mission to simply go to another system and deliver something, and the cargo was legal too. Out to big black I go....

So, gear up, hardpoints closed, scoop closed, mass lock cleared.....J for FSD...all good so far. ok...now how to select my destination if its more than one jump away....fast forward 5 mins of trial and error...right, destination locked and in front of me hyperdrive engaging.......

all good, I made the jump, pulled up and away from the sun and found my next jump, repeat process and I'm in the right system.
Now I just need to find the right target in the system and head that way. I found the Supercruise confusing, I'm not sure why my ship wouldn't slow down and instead kept building speed - I'm guessing I was passing too close to other planets and getting a slingshot from their gravity wells but I made it in the end. Disengaged supercruise and there's the target! happy days!

Landing on an orbital was trickier than in a station as the platform was harder to find and I spent a couple of minutes on the pad but facing the wrong way wondering why I couldn't dock but got it in the end. First mission a success!

I tried some other missions last night and got frustrated by the "go find some cargo in system XXX" there seems to be no hints about where in the system the cargo is and space is big....really really big. I flew around looking for weak signal sources and spent about 30 minutes before giving up - I did find some rare artworks that I picked up and sold on the black market so not completely wasted.

I think the most annoying thing of my first night is when I managed to get too close to the sun in one system and then couldn't figure out how to get away again - the ship blew up in the end. It wouldn't let me engage the FSD as I wasn't pointed at a target and I couldn't find another target fast enough, simply boosting away from the sun didn't work either. I guess I was trapped in its gravity and my sidewinder wasn't strong enough to break out.

A friend then joined me and helped me wrack up some credits by doing some bounty hunting - it helped me learn flying the ship and managing power settings, throttle and weapons whilst having him as back up. I ended the night with 185k credits which I turned into a viper and a couple of upgrades.

I'll be back for more tonight :)

Do any of you guys play this with an Xbox (or PS4) controller?
I do not.
Two friends of mine do, though and they fly well enough. It's not their kind of game normally though, so I don't know what advice they would offer.
Another friend is a HOTAS whore (like me), so I just watch him try with a controller and go from Master, to Noob, to Dead rather quickly, before consoling him with mocking laughter.

A few friends described it as "pretty impossible to play with anything other than a KB + Mouse and/or a HOTAS", just wondering how true it is - or whether I just did it wrong :p
If it's me, I would agree. Horrid, horrid, horrid... and I'm a big Freelancer player, as well!
However, there have been many games where the spaceships used similar control mechanisms and the aforementioned HOTAS whore has seemingly played most of them. He is absolutely wicked with KB&M!!

The CH is massively cool, full stop. Fantastic setup and highly recommended +1!!

Trade - Yeah, grind some, although my main wingman is one of those who never goes anywhere without a full hold (unless it's a collection mission) and never uses trade tools, yet still makes money faster than I can, even though I can make a good 3mil per hour!!
I guess if you're one of them smart and clever folk what can count and all that...

Combat - I used shield cells, boosters, reinforcements and all that a while back. Stopped bothering, really. I don't really meet that many people and am not in a position to go Pirating, although I still see a fair few in bigger ships so maybe they won't be logging so much any more... I only ever had a couple do that anyway. Depends if you were hunting newb Sideys or not.
Most people seem to be getting their PvP kicks from CQC at the moment.

Turrets seem great if you use them properly. I prefer my Gimbals, but all my wingmen use them to some extent.

PowerPlay - Dunno. Still building my ship up for that. Sounds like a fun way to earn 50mil, though!

I have a Python, too!!!

I e never tried with M&K, only ever used my ancient and relatively simple Logitech attack 3 joystick. No yaw twist, it has a throttle and lots of buttons on the base but I rarely use them. I do almost everything on keyboard with exception of thrusters, weapons and flight actions. Works well enough.

Did end up buying a Viper yesterday. Took a few missions to get the top powerplant, but that's now in and it's now well on it's way to being genuinely useful. Just need to update the hull and max out the guns.

BTW, how do you make 3 mill/hour? I don't think I've made that in 10 hours play. Is it just a higher level thing once you've got really in business?

Also once you are comfortable killing Anacondas and the like you can take multiple kill missions at circa £100-200k reward each and there will usually be a decent bounty (few hundred k) on each target - builds up quite quickly. I can do probably 5 of those in an hour, so maybe £1.5-£2m and you're not venturing far

Not sure I'd do that with anything less than a vulture/asp though

Yeah - though slightly annoying ly mine constantly tells me I'm going to need to put a CD key in...which the game doesn't ever want, minor gripe though

In trading, 6 mill an hour is doable in an Anaconda.
If you are with one of the Powerplay people (Initials AD but not Ailsing?) you can get 100% increased bounty payout too.

Would love to see an explanation of how you do this bud.

Also, does the 100% bounty get immediately added on when you destroy the ship or is it only when you hand in that it gets added on?

am guessing there is no free trial?

currently i play eve but elite does look good, last time i played elite it was on an amiga 1200 with wireframe graphics

Any one fly a DBS what is your thoughts on it?

thinking of upgrading to one from a nearly fully upgraded Adder which I use for smuggling missions and destroying cobras that constantly keep trying to pull me out of supercruise.

Not officially, somebody did link a download of the combat training scenarios earlier in the thread though, if you enjoyed elite back in the amiga days I'll push the boat out and say you'll enjoy it enough now for £17.99 to be worth a punt :) Pretty sure the amiga version was solid vector graphics too, don't recall them being wireframe.

Tried power play again, didn't understand it - went with one of the combat orientated powers who wanted me to go to crime sweeps in various systems and mop up in there. Consistently found none, got some credits by doing other stuff....not really sure what mind, couldn't trade them in despite being in a control system so jacked it again.

I'm sure there's some in depth knowledge I need to have to get going with it properly, but much like a lot of the more complex elements of the game it's just not any fun

Friend of mine flies one - Does very nicely.
I liked it and it's a good all-rounder as a stepping stone toward the big boys, although it's more for the fast-movers as far as combat goes.
The Explorer is more of a heavy-hitter and in keeping with my play style, but only until you can kit yourself out a combat Asp!!

BTW, how do you make 3 mill/hour? I don't think I've made that in 10 hours play. Is it just a higher level thing once you've got really in business?
10 hours?
I've been playing (off and on) since Beta! ;)

Start out by getting good at flying - Not combat, just general flight, going from one place to another. Skirt the gravity wells, drop in line with the dock, navigate the Nav panel while avoiding planets, stuff like that.
If you're still crashing into the docking hatch, you need more practice... mainly as you'll be flying without shields and repair bills eat up your profits!

Decide how you're going to make money. I grind trade, whereas my main wingman does transport/cargo and combat missions, but never goes anywhere without a full hold. Both are pretty fast earners, as is Trading Rares.

Rares are high value commodities that are only ever available in small quantities, as in 3-7 of them at any one time. You generally have to take them a minimum distance from where you buy them before the prices make them worth selling. However there are a couple of 'Rares Trade Routes', where you go jumping across a number of systems, buying up Rares as you go and then selling some, before buying others and continuing on, culminating in a big round trip that earns you loads.
It's a good quick-start profit maker, until you can start buying the ships that move 100+m³ of cargo. At that point it's usually quicker, cheaper and more profitable to trade large volumes of normal commodity.

Trade grind means learning how the trade map works and making notes on the prices of high-value cargoes in nearby systems. Use one of the Trading Tools (Slopey's BPC is a very good one) if you prefer. EDDB is also pretty good.
Get yourself a ship that can haul lots of cargo. Strip out everything you don't need, chuck in a large powerplant, FSD and power distributor. Fill every other space with cargo racks. Ditch the shields, weapons, utilities and all that. Consider a fuel scoop if you're doing lots of long distance jumps, although a few hundred Cr for fuel bills isn't that much overall...

Then, once you have identified a profitable run, fill up and transport the cargo, sell and buy something that will earn you a profit on the trip back.
Keep doing this until you can afford a bigger cargo ship (and some cargo to go in it), strip and refit it, then rinse and repeat.

Depending entirely on where you are in the galaxy, you may need several jumps to make a profit, you may need to ship several cargoes to several different systems, or you may find a one-jump route that takes no time at all.
I am lucky in that, with skilled flying and a bit of focus, I can load up, jump, fly, dock, sell, buy, jump, fly, dock and sell, all in under 12 minutes - Five of those makes me over 3 mil. I could make a lot more if I ship illegal cargo, but the authorities love me and I don't want to start spoiling the relationship just yet... :D

I currently fly a Python, stripped to give me 292m³ of cargo.
I did have a few hundred million credits, but I also have a very aggressive spending habit, a desire to try out loads of different weapon/equipment combos and a penchant for High Intensity RESes and Conflict Zones, where me yelling "Ramming Speed" is actually cause for everyone to flee or make sure they got their Last Rites before they left spacedock!! :p

3 mil in hour is rather conservative for trading. When I had my Clipper I could make 1.4 mil in 10 minutes, and that was only 240t of space available. if you think how that scales up with the huge T9's, then trading is still truly where the real money is to be made.

If you can stomach the ethics, Imperial Slaves are worth a small fortune at the right system, and you can find systems that are a couple of jumps apart where you make between 1.5k and 2k credits per tonne.

Combat's a lot more fun, but doesn't make anywhere near as much cash. My FDL is nowhere near as profitable as my old Clipper. But it does have a huge C4 plasma accelerator. ;)

My Viper is now fully upgraded. Just done some good research about improving my combat flying, so will be trying that out tonight.

I fancy having a go at exploration, just for a laugh. What's the suggested ship for that?
