*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

So, something really odd has happened. It's been a few months since I last played but I tried to play again last night during some server issues and my account suddenly has 42Mil credits on it...

They are still there today :o

Thought that was just my memory after some rare trading I'd forgotten about. I had a similar amount on my account after I'd logged back in after a long hiatus.

It was enough to upgrade my asp to A rated units on pretty much everything I wanted.

Well, spent a couple of hours last night undermining Zachary in one of his control systems. Collected 750merits and headed back to 'cash them in'.

Hope the prismatic shields are worth it.

Not sure that powerplay adds that much for the casual player. Seems like I was just being a pirate for a couple of hours collecting merits instead of cargo.

The python performed well - although thinking of trying all pulse instead of all burst. 5 burst lasers sucks the capacitor dry pretty fast and overloads thermally very quickly. Can still take a cobra down in one capacitor's worth though.

Don't bother going all laser. It's annoying!!
I run a pair of Beams for shields, but switch to the three Projectile weapons (2 Multicannons and a Cannon/Plasma Accelerator (depending on my mood)) once the shields are down or if the beams are overheating. Projectiles rip the hell out of hull anyway so you'll blink and that'll be a Sidewinder just *gone*, but it really stands out when you're working to take down the bigger ships!

Do any of you Xbox controller people have a setup you can suggest? I decided to buy it, again, so I wanna try it with an Xbox controller before investing in a HOTAS.

There is an advanced xbox controller option pre-configured in game. I think I started with that and tweaked it so that the left / right buttons affected the throttle in 25% increments instead of gradually and added a few binds for chaff dispensing etc. Its a good enough one to start with.

So I should sell the Eagle and use the money to buy a Hauler?

I've only put in a few hours and I just did missions and it didnt take me long to get enough for a Viper. I did hardly any trading but did grab cargo floating round using cargo scoop. Only thing I've destroyed a couple of ships too.

I need to get back into this now I have my joystick but I've suddenly discovered the world of Total War after the Humble Bundle package where you got like what seems to be the whole series for a tenner.

What TTaskmaster said lasers are only really good for shields.

I run a smuggling Adder with a large laser turret on top for taking down ships shields.
After that I use a cannon and heat seeker missiles seems to work well even on pythons. I run out of missles and cannon shells on anything bigger.

I run an all thermal load out on my FDL. The reason being medium pulses knock holes in power plants fairly quickly, and due to the (current) annoying issue with RES spawns being so weighted towards weaker ships, when you do actually get one worth keeping with bigger ships sods law you end up running out of ammo. Obviously with an all thermal load out you don't have this issue. What you lose in longer time to kill you make up for by being able to stay longer in the field. Each to their own obviously. :)

On a side note I bought the huge PA for my FDL. Absolutely hilarious weapon for PVE, when a pirate comes up to you point blank and says, 'What are you hauling?', I respond by showing them a glowing pink ball of doom. Drops the shields in one hit on anything up to a Cobra most of the time, and can kill an Anaconda in two decent hits to the power plant. It's not easy to use I'll say that but oh so satisfying when you land a hit! :D

Being gradually improving my use of the combat options. How do you guys deal with aiming once FA is disabled? Everytime I've tried that, I end up point in all the wrong directions, very much like being interdicted whilst in supercruise. Maybe I'm just inept at controlling the ship, but I thought I'd ask if there's any good suggestions.

Well that's just not at all true, they're just generally slower when it comes to the hull, but the offset is that you don't run out of ammo.
It's not quite true... and not quite what I was saying.
I have run out of ammo and taken down big ships with just the two lasers, on shamefully frequent occasions... I'm just too proud to leave the field while there are high-value targets still needing killing!

Yes, what you lose in time spent on target you gain from not having to go reload, BUT... The longer you take to drop a target, the more time they have to return fire, damage you, reduce your efficiency and ultimately kill you.
It's even more of a concern with wingmen and PvP, especially if you're in a smaller ship and/or a relative newbie.
I just like the sound of big automatic weapons blatting away, being blasted out through my speakers!!! :D

FA off is about smooth inputs - that makes it easier to judge the counter movement in order to stabilise your aim. Gimbals help too, as does having a button on your stick assigned to FA on/off, that way you can switch between the two modes quickly in order to make the best of each situation.

Seriously though, I'm super-excited for this new content!

Can't help but feel that they'd have sold a lot more lifetime expansion passes if they had revealed this info earlier, at the time it felt like a leap of faith but now I'm a lot more confident with the direction the game is taking.

I'm just happy that Vive support has been officially announced :D

Couldn't help myself, bought the Braben Bobblehead :o
What a flippin' ridiculous waste of money.
Five whole pounds for a piece of pointless, meaningless digital tat that has absolutely ZERO impact on the game and only serves to put more money in Frontier's pocket........

........okay, yes, I bought one too!! :D

What would be the best value way of buying into this?

Just get the base game for £18 for the next thee hours (available for 3hr 20m at time of writing)

I did read that the expansion that's coming out will be bundled with the game and it'll be cheaper to buy the two, is that correct?

Or...a "lifetime expansion pass". Can't seem to find that on Steam but it seems to be, throw down a huge pile of beans now and you'll get everything, ever, when we release it...which could be months/years away.

Hmmmmmmm. Any thoughts?

I've only recently purchased the game, but I've yet to take the plunge and actually play it. Does anyone have any tips for an explorer? What ship would be most suitable? Ideally I want something for long distance travel, I plan to explore deep space, using the fuel scoop for self-sufficiency. Stop me if this doesn't make any sense! :p

Edit: What settings can I expect with the system in my signature?
