*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

With a similar spec machine I run at 2560 x 1440 with pretty much all the eye candy turned up. You won't be able to run 4K at any playable frame rate.
The Asp is pretty much the go to explorer, but it will take you a while to get the money to buy one if you have just started the game. That being said people have set off exploring in the Hauler.

What would be the best value way of buying into this?

Just get the base game for £18 for the next thee hours (available for 3hr 20m at time of writing)

I did read that the expansion that's coming out will be bundled with the game and it'll be cheaper to buy the two, is that correct?

Or...a "lifetime expansion pass". Can't seem to find that on Steam but it seems to be, throw down a huge pile of beans now and you'll get everything, ever, when we release it...which could be months/years away.

Hmmmmmmm. Any thoughts?

Cheapest way into the game (if you plan to buy the expansion) would be to wait for Horizons to be released as you'd pay the same price for it whether or not you purchase the game now. If you want to play now, £17.99 is a great price. I believe the lifetime pass has now been withdrawn and was only available from Frontiers own store.

Yes, lifetime pass is no longer available.

Don't forget, if you buy now for £17.99 you can still pre-order Horizons with a £10 discount, so the whole lot for £47.98 which is only £7.99 more than the cost of waiting until Horizons release :)

No idea how long that £10 discount is going to be available for though.

Edit: And I am so far resisting the Bobblehead... so far...

Anyone know if the Horizon's pre-order will work with a Steam paid for install?

Was out during the weekend. Now have a full on class A Cobra. Thinking about adding a Viper to the stable as my pirate hunter as it'll be MUCH cheaper on insurance costs if it all goes wrong.
Also finally got around to better understanding Powerplays and joined a faction. Only issue was that it turned out I was over 100 lightyears from the nearest friendly base, so had to do an 18 jump run for "home space".

I've also been doing some solid reading about Elite on VR. Think I'll be doing this next year when's it's released. I found it very interesting that I'd asked the question about how VR compares to a good projector experience. Unanimous response was to go with VR. Big of a bugger as it's not going to be cheap, as I'll probably also need a new PC...

If your current machine can handle the game at high settings now then likely the only part you'd need to upgrade would be a GPU. The nVidia 970 will probably be down to around £200 by the time you need it.

That's my plan anyway, looking at SteamVR if it's around the same price, it should be out in December!

From reading, I got the impression that it VR might need some real GPU horsepower. There are talks of it needing a 980Ti to really work well. As I'm running a 280x, probably need to save my pennies.

I've got a 290 which I hope will be good enough. But if it isn't I'll be splashing the cash anyway. I'm really excited about the Vive and VR so I'm prepared to spend to get a decent set up.

Me to. I think I'll try to grab a dem before parting with the cash, but I'm really looking forward to this.

As for the game, had a bit of a lousy day a couple days back, costing me close on 2 million credits (blown up twice in my fully pimped Cobra, then failed to read the Powerplay conditions and throw over a million away by accident).
Now back with a fully upgraded Cobra for smuggling, and a Viper for having a scrap.

Good to be back at the cockpit. Only time for a quick play and I forgot most of the controls lol but soon got back to it. I still have 10 days off, so will be giving this some seerious play time and giving the new combat thingy a play as well. Avoided for now till I know what is what exactly :)

Just started playing this and am loving it so far.Playing with an Xbox One pad even though I have an X52, it's just easier swapping between my monitor and tv with this setup and not driving my wife crazy with wires everywhere. It did take me around three hours to set it up just how I wanted it though and there's probably still more I can tweak. I can see myself getting lost in this game. I'm going to go the pacifist route to begin with, I just want to do some transporting to get enough money to start mining.

Don't worry - The day will come when you play while tired and mess up twice in a row at a RES, costing you 8 million in Python insurance... THAT is a bad day!! :D
