*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

There is a massive debate over whether it is or isn't an MMO.
There *is* a massive number of online players, but they are *not* all in the same place at the same time... Is it, isn't it...

Indeed.. if it is an MMO then it is very poor by common MMO standards as it is completely missing many basic mmo staples. However the potential is excellent. Once they fix a few things and implement stuff like horizons we will get more interactivity (crafting, multicrew, more communication etc) and variety i believe.

I personally think it's just an MO, really.
I mean, unless there's a MASSIVE event in one system, the chances of millions of players being together are pretty slim when you have hundreds of billions of systems for them to spread out around... I've only ever seen a handful of players outside of the starting systems and even then only a very few even acknowledge my comms...

Does it really matter? It's all a matter of semantics, all MMO's with the exception of EVE that I know of do the same thing with either different servers to play on, instancing locations or a mixture of both to keep performance at a reasonable level, Everquest 2 being the one I know of off the top of my head that did both. While I would dearly love to see Elite have the ability to have hundreds if not thousands of player Commanders in the same station or fight I do not at all want to see the horrendous performance that plagues EVE due to it and I really do not want to see them have to make up some ridiculous time dilation mechanic to keep things playable.

Oh god can you imagine the performance hit, its bad enough with NPC's in the same area, to drop a **** tonne of CMDR's in there as well, be like CS all over again lol

It might be nice to partake of the very occasional EPIC SCALE BATTLE that all these spacey games keep using in their marketing... but I kinda prefer the open emptiness of space. It actually *feels* like an immense expanse of nothingness when you don't see another soul for weeks on end, which is far more immersive to me when I'm off exploring.

So I decided to buy a Diamondback Explorer last night. It's not bad, I think I will ditch the bottom Cannon and go back to a Multi cannon. Seems to punch harder for the firing times. I think the Cobra I left at the station has the advantage in outright manoeuvrability but the DB's shields are better. Got destroyed by an imperial clipper though and am running dangerously close to not having enough to rebuy!

I remember running an unshielded weaponless trading Python back in the day without enough for a rebuy, tense times :D

Sure adds an edge to the game.

It certainly adds something to the game when you stand to lose significant assets, funny how it jacks up your awareness of everything :D

What they really need to do is some kind of EPIC galactic war type event....

Empire vs Federation or something....

The problem is the entire powers/major/minor faction thing to me just seems passive in presence....

I have bags of rebuy money, but that is how I trade normally.
Just find a quiet corner of the galaxy and grind away. Just the occasional interdiction to worry about and most run screaming when they see you're more than happy to RAM them to death... in the face... several times!! :D

Few people have the bandwidth to cope with that, I imagine.
Mine actually stutters when another player jumps in!

That's the first stream that has left me a little disappointed if I am honest, not sold on the turret control and I hope the ease of ship handling was due to it being a very small planetoid with very low gravity. Also, the machine they were using did appear to be struggling to run that at a decent frame rate, I've been spoilt by 60fps for a while in elite now and not attaining that is going to be unwelcome, oh well upgrade time I suppose. The crashed ships did look pretty darn good though, was nice to see that they looked like they had been there a while.

I know multicrew is coming next year (back end of year I imagine) but I'm quite intrigued how they Implement it, and what roles others will have on the ship.

Don't worry - You'll always have a place on my Python as a tea boy... or stewardess... depending on your inclination... and what you expect as a salary package...:p

I quite liked the combat and I am sure time will improve how it works. I generally sit at 144 fps (locked), so should be good to run this for a while :p

i'm not sure how the srv turret can be used without using a gamepad..

I was assuming ti would be a mouse point and shoot, but then how would you driver the vehicle at the same time using the stick?

Joystick hat controls the turret. Joystick axes control the vehicle.
That said, I'd expect all this to be completely user-definable to whatever you wanted anyway, so it's whatever works best for you.
