The *Official* Eve Online Thread

Excatly. Carriers are great for defence, but who wants to sit in AZN all day waiting for some bad guys to come along

Carriers are good for offensive duties as part of a gang, and can hold out quite well regardless, but they really shouldn't go anywhere without someone nearby that can cyno them out of trouble if needs be. Fighters will rip to shreads most BS, and with the size of drone bay they've got you could fit a very healthy compliment of medium and heavy drones to deal with any pesky interceptors, or to act as flying EW support.

i really want to start playing EVE Online again....

...but the way the skill system works (time based) means I'll always be lagging a gazillion years behind 90% of EVE players. I find that thought so offputting while I know the game itself is amazing.

Is there no way round this? No way I can simply forget I'll be lagging?

Well your not really lagging behind, newer players just have to specalise more, what you have to remember is those who have been playing for years will have skill points in lots of different areas (Mining, Production, Trade, Combat, Ships) they will even have wasted skill points in areas of the game that they don't play any more.

If you listen to the people who have been playing for a long time, you can take heed of the mistakes they have made with their training and not make them your self.

Yes there are people out there with 20m skill points, there are however a huge number of people with 1m, 5m or even less.

I had that thought but specializing is the key. Choose a race to follow or a ship class type and in about 6 months you can be pretty skilled with the support, gunnery and spaceship command. If you get the learning out of the way then you don't have to bothered with it again and you will be quicker at getting to your prefer choice of play.
