Is this game worth playing as a start to this kind of game?
Also how many hours do you put in a day? I don't have access to the internet some days.

I would guess he was fitted something like 4 heavy electron IIs, 1 medium nosferatu and 5 medium nosferatu drones... When ratting these days, I pack a nosferatu because it's a massive help if you ever get jumped.
On a brutix you'd be looking at fitting 5 x 200mm or 5 x heavy ions and then a couple of nosferatu, with web, cap recharger afterburner and then something like a tracking disruptor.
All things being equal - your tank should own his, and your drones should be even... it depends on your skills and your fitting though.

And yes, you do need to get past the steep learning curve, but doing ALL the training missions and getting advice from older players helps a lot...

, though ussually I have 20-30km margin to warp away when they warp in, so unless i'm unlucky and they warp in close I dont have to worry very much

A brutix is a sweet ship, in the hands of a capable pilot it can kill HACs, Recons and battleships. A correctly setup Brutix should never lose to a thorax which brings the fight into its optimal fighting range of sub 10km.
I have no plans to disclose my current setups for it other than:
make use of the ships bonus to medium hybrids and repair amount, use lots of blasters and consider more than one rep. A cap booster is an excellent addition to the midslot advantage over the thorax.
Devvon Maelstrom has a very good setup for it, but it takes some researching on killboards to work it out

I haven't taken a brutix out for a spin in PVP yet... but i'd imagine a small armour repairer II and a medium armour repairer II with 1 nano adaptive and then two tech II mag stabs... webber, scrambler, MWD, cap injector... highs as many ion II's as you can fit.
