This is the official Football Manager 2008 thread. This thread is for you to tell us stories about how you've taken your local club up to the giddy heights of the Premier League and taken on and beaten Chelsea in the Champions League final of 2046. Or have you taken over a top club like Man Utd or Arsenal and rewritten the record books? Let us know what you've done and what you've achieved.

Have you found the ultimate super player? Or the next wonderkid? Tell us about the essential purchases to make. Or perhaps you've found a coach or physio who makes the difference between losing and winning the league title. Or perhaps you lost too many games, lost the confidence of your players and fans and the board sacked you? Perhaps you've been at one club for so long and have been so successful that the board have honoured you by naming the club's new stadium after you?

Have you got a question about tactics or want to show off your tactic that bamboozles the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool? Have you've won the league with Wigan and want to show everyone the league table to rub it in?

And if you find a graphics pack that you like, share the knowledge. Player face pics, kit packs and club logos, its all good. If you want to post screenshots, keep them to a decent size like 800x600 and explain what you are showing us. Likewise if you post a link to a download I will do my best to get the link added to this post asap so that all the links you could possibly need for FM08 is easy to find and not hidden away on the 6th page somewhere.

So that's the intro out of the way. Let's get on with the show. Below are some links. Suggest some more and I'll add them on for you. From now on I will ask the Dons to merge any new FM08 thread into this one so that we can keep the information all in one place to make it easier to find. Let's make this a cracking thread for all us FM fans. :)

Tints and hips
If you wish to download graphics for FM08 there is a procedure to follow to get them to show up in the game. You need to go to your My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2008\

If there isn't a Graphics folder, create it. Then make sub-folders called Kits, Logos, Facepacks for erm kits, logos and facepacks funnily enough. :p Once you've done this you unpack the graphics you've downloaded into the corresponding folder and then you should see the graphics in the game. If you don't see them, go to the Preferences menu in-game and the display menu. Untick the "Use cache" option or whatever it is called. I forget and I'm at home on my laptop. Then tick the "Reload skin on OK" option I think it is. This makes the game always reload the skin when you click OK. This should sort out the graphics.

Now if you use the SS08 kits, there is something special you need to do. The SS08 shirt template is a different shape to the default kits so you need to download the default 'SS08' kits so that FM08 uses the right default kits. If you don't use this your SS08 kits will show up in game but you will see white edges where the SS08 kit is smaller than the default kits. This is mighty annoying!! So you download the SS08 default kit. Then you unpack the new default kits to the kits folder. BUT you must put them into a subfolder called 'default' I think it is.

SS08 created over at my main FM forums FMGLive. The guys who have put together SS08 have made the kits look almost realistic. For them to work correctly in game though, remember to download the DEFAULT pack with the WHITE EFFECT. :D

Just finished my second season with Barca. Won the treble in both seasons. I started out by asking my assistant to pick a team and tried to adapt and tweak from there. I've been using the same basic tactic ever since.

Most of the tweaking has gone on with the sliders in the team instructions. I play quite an attacking style with closing down all the way up, except the centre backs. I try to keep most of the passing options at mixed so as not to restrict the runners to one style of play.

I've been playing this since release, but haven't finished done too much yet though. I have just finished season 1 with my Spurs team, and finished 4th in the League, winning on the final day to leap frog Liverpool who had to settle for 5th after losing at home to Chelsea.

One thing I will add is that I do find United and Chelsea extremely difficult to beat, especially since I downloaded the Beta patch. I have signed a few good players, and a few for the future, the budget at Spurs is limited, and haven't managed to flog any of the dead wood for good money yet. Only decent player out of the door was the £10m sale of Defoe to Portsmouth.

In has come Sergey Ignashevich, on a freebie from CSKA, Van der Vaart who is an awesome player, and one that I have heard recommended by many FM08 players and Rodrigo Palacio for £6m as another front man.

I have signed Mika Aaratilo who appears to be a cheat player, as he is exceptional, but never been heard off, and stats aren't worldclass. In addition, I have some youngsters, with the highlights being Saez, Saivet and Wiljenboom (sp).

In my other game that I started, I loaded up English, Scottish, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, French leagues and ended up with the random choice of Harlepool and am trying to get them to the top. So far just finished pre-season and it isnt as easy as I would have liked.

In my Spurs game I only played 1 up top, and I don't really like this formation, so have spent pre-season trying to get a tactic with a 2 man front line, hence why I haven't progressed very far. So far I have signed Matt Jansen and Ray Parlour on freebies, and Seb Hines on loan. I have just got Liverpool as a Parent Club and they have sent me Danny Martin as a loanee keeper.

I only play FM when away on business trips or out of the house, otherwise I am playing The Witcher, so not as much game play as I would have liked.
 
Still waiting on giving this a real good play, started a league with Boro and had mixed results and sat mid table which is pretty much what I'd be aiming for first season.

I really don't like the new white theme, can't wait to change it.
 
I've got the demo of FM2008 on my work PC, got about 6 games into the season with Swansea during lunch breaks etc...

Doing quite well :)


Just built my new pc last night at home, Q6600 4GB ram etc...etc... so watch FM2008 fly! :D

Started with Swansea again, and I'm trying to buy roughly the same players so I can pick up where I left off.

I try to buy the youngsters from the big clubs, and loan the outcasts and decent players who feel left out of their main clubs.

I like to play 4-4-2

I like to play a free flowing attacking style, quick movement which often gives a risky style of play.

If I'm playing a more dominant team, I play a counter attacking style relying more on defending and attempting to push away on the break away.


Has anyone bothered changing the pitch size to suit their team better?
I've left it as it normally is so far.

Liverpool as a Parent Club for Spurs :confused:

I do hope you mean your Hartlepool game :)
 
There is a beta patch post on the main SI forums to the various versions of the game. This fixes among other things the closing down bug and the disallowed goals issue as well as other bugs. The real patch is being worked on which will include the usual database and other bug fixes that are still there, no eta for this other than a couple of weeks.

just achieved promotion in my first season as sheff wed, got to the carling cup semi final too until villa destroyed me 5-1. think i might need some rebuilding in the summer :)

I have dabbled at changing the pitch size, but if I am honest I haven't a clue if it makes any difference.

As for the comment regarding the Liverpool parent club issue, yes, I mean't in my Hartlepool save.

At the moment I'm keeping the default tactics but tweaking them a bit. I have one good game and one bad game so I think I need to read a tactics guide and develop my own one.

This is a good guide to read if you want to make your own tactic. As is this.

Well I presume that if you try and play a narrow type of game and an extremely wide pitch it would leave you really open?

Shorter pitches might be easier for quick breakaway goals and maybe fatigue players less?

I think there's a bit of info on it in the random info bar on the loading pages.
