***** The Official Galaxy Nexus Thread *****

When ICS gets around to being released on other devices such as the SGSII, what will stand this hand set apart besides the impressive screen? I'm just wondering whether to get this, the SGSII or wait for the SGSIII??

Let me make one thing perfectly clear.

ICS on the Nexus and ICS on the Galaxy S II are worlds apart. The Galaxy S II version has been hacked to death by Samsung and might as well still be Gingerbread.

I've tried every iteration of it so far and it's just poor compared to the Nexus experience.

Had mine 3 weeks took it out of my pocket today and it has a nice big crack in the screen.
It's a good phone but not a patch on what the 3GS was at the time that came out. iOS is a far superior os in my book and I can say that from experience. Tho at this time the Samsung gn is a better phone overall than the 4s in terms of spec.

Disagree totally I had to sell my Nexus due to being laid off at work, but managed to get a brand new I4 of me bro for £200(bargain I thought), as nice as the I4 is for me it can't hold a light against the Nexus, it just feels featureless and really basic now IOS, it really hasn't come on a lot really.

The I4 works better out the box but for me that is more to do with Google making such big improvements to how Android looks and runs and IOS really just looks how it did when the 2g came out just with small improvements over the years, but its looking so outdated now.

I like the camera/video on the I4 much better than the Nexus without a doubt but apart from that nothing excites me with it, and my other bro who likes Iphone has offered me a swap with his Galaxy Nexus for the I4 which I will be doing.

Featureless! :p

Tell me a few features that iOS lacks that you can't live without on ICS. Root-related and Jailbreak-related don't count, it's a minefield.

I still think that ultimately they do very similar things, Android is certainly capable of more (at the expense of certain things) but those special things aren't really important features.

Widgets are nice but after I sold my android for a wp7 I didn't miss them, they really don't make much difference, maybe a few seconds saved on opening the app to get the info, certainty easy to live without for me.

It is rather amusing that while Apple go round suing everyone for copying them, they are working on copying all the bits of Android they don't have ;) Anyway, that's probably a discussion for a different thread.

I don't care for them either personally, not an important feature.

Its a nice phone still but it has no wow factor the Iphone for me now and yeah widgets is a big thing missing for me.

Isn't that what everything is about? Making info easier to get to?

I think I'd really miss some of my widgets. Weather is an obvious one, but Beyondpod is a good example. I find it quite annoying if I actually have to open to the app itself :)

Also, my TV Show Favs app has a great widget, scrolling through the shows I still need to watch.

Astrid too. It's going being able to see my to do list without having to go into the app.

The more I think about it. The more I do use widgets quite a lot.

Think about the 'plan my route home' widget too. One tap and it's plotted. That saves probably 15-20 seconds of messing. Okay, in the grand scheme of things, not really a lot, but that's 20-30 times longer! :)

I really like it personally, the Lumia 800 is an extremely lush device overall.

I've been meaning to get one at some point, but I have the Omnia 7 which is similar.

I'm interested in your response Robbo. Would ICS be similar once officially released for SGSII tho? I assume your experience thus far has been blighted due to using unofficial firmware updates a la XDA Developers? Again, it seems to me that bar the superior screen of the GNex, once ICS is officially released on the SGS series of hand sets, there really isn't much in it spec-wise (compared to the SII) altho potentially the SGS III could blow it out the water with (hopefully) greater specs.

I suppose the million dollar question should be which hand set to go for, the GNex which looks amazing and has ICS as standard; the classic SGSII which should get ICS at some point and is cheaper due to its age or hold off for the SGSIII (but there are no set release dates or confirmed specs for it as of yet, although how long till this gets the official ICS flavour...)

Are there any other peeps in a similar situation?

Although I haven't tried them, I think the current crop of ICS ROM's are based on official leaks. So I think Robbo is suggesting ICS on the SGSII simply wont be as good.

The hacked versions tend to be based on AOSP, so you get the vanilla ICS, but many things don't work due to lack of official drivers.

The official ICS update for the Galaxy S II will never be similar to the one on the Nexus.

Samsung use a version of Android that is modified by TouchWiz, therefore the TouchWiz overlay on top of the software makes it appear very similar to all previous versions.

There is nothing inherently wrong with TouchWiz, but it's uglier and requires a lot of modification to 'hide'.

The firmwares are official leaked ones and they aren't perfect, but they are a fairly accurate reflection of how the final version will be; identical in most ways.

If you want to wait, wait and see what happens regarding the Galaxy S 3, but it likely won't be released for a good two or three months yet.

The Sony Xperia S is due out fairly soon and looks a very decent phone, by all accounts it has the best camera on a mobile phone so far.

Spec wise, the Galaxy S II only really has the better camera and SD card slot going for it over the Nexus. The internals are faster but you won't be able to notice the difference.

Indeed.

Robbo's main reasoning behind what he's saying is that Samsung will use Touchwiz instead of the ASOP launcher in ICS which he and a lot of people feel is a step lessons the appeal.

edit: too slow

I used vanilla ice cream sandwich on my desire hd till I sold it, it was a massive improvement over gingerbread and made sense seem even more ugly and slow and blah I actually hated my HD on sense getting vanilla ics was a breath of fresh air, google really upped their game with it.
Not used touch wiz but imagine its similar to sense in many ways, if was going to buy android again it would the gnex or phone would have to have a strong rom community so I could put a stock ics on it. I imagine the gs3 will have a huge following and will get a vanilla rom very quickly once it's released, for example.
