***** The Official Galaxy Nexus Thread *****

My Nexus is currently on 4.0.2 and keeps flashing up with a message to update to 4.0.4. I've followed the instructions on screen, and tried to update numerous times and the phone restarts and then just hangs on the startup screen and just displays the Google logo.

I've left it overnight once as I thought it just needed more time, but it was still like that in the morning.

Also tried a factory reset but it did the same thing.

I end up having to take the battery out to get the phone back on properly. :/

Any advice? To be honest I'm quite happy staying on 4.0.2 but the update message is getting annoying.

Is your phone rooted with a custom recovery? If so, OTAs will not install.

Ive no idea. What is a custom recovery and how do i find out if I have it?

I've had the Nexus since it launched and I'm pretty sure it already did an auto update, a few weeks after I got it. Think it was to fix the volume bug.

So is there a way I can patch it manually then? Like plug it into the PC and download something?

I also got my Nexus recently, in March in fact. And it is on 4.0.2. How come I don't have the flash message prompting me to update? Is that update initiated by the telecom service provider like vodaphone or it comes from the internet?

I would assume it's the OS(Android) searching for updates on the web. In a similar way to how Windows does it with its updates.

There's must be a setting to configure this though(again, like Windows). Maybe there's a way to turn auto updates on/off?

I just want to turn mine off really. If my phone can't/won't update anyway then I'd rather just switch these annoying update messages off and be done with it.

I'm on 4.0.1 and constantly get asked to update my version, however, when I do it always fails (gets about 1/4 way through then turns to the dead android with a red exclaimation mark). Full wifi signal and battery.
Wish I could just turn off the constant harrassment!

If you don't know what a custom recovery is, you don't have it :D

Yes, as others have said, you can download a full factory image from Google and flash it :)

My Nexus has been acting weird.

Over the past few days when I have unplugged the phone from charging the battery icon doesnt recognise this and still displays as charging - (although the battery bit in the settings says it is discharing).

Also last night I kept getting a notification every 5-10s that my battery only had 14% or less battery (normally it only comes up once then dissapears until 4% battery remains)

A restart sorts both problems out but then they start again later the same day/following day.

Also when I restarted the phone when I was getting the notification messages all the time, after saying it had 14% battery before I restarted once it had booted up I actually only had 2%.

Very confused as to what is going on and not sure what to do next? Any help would be great.

Is your phone rooted? If it is, you can try reseting the battery stats.

Yep, my phone is rooted. How would I reset the battery stats?

Edit: Turns out its a hardware fault with the USB charging board. Wil have to send off for repair/replacement :(

I've recently seen this phone on sale for £285, so I was just wondering if anyone had any major reasons why I should not buy one. Are all the major bugs ironed out etc?

I was waiting to see what the S3 would offer, but as the price difference is widening (£500 vs £285!) I'm now leaning towards the GN, as I wouldn't be taking advantage of the S3s features. I'll wait for the main reviews of the S3 to come through of course, but unless you guys convince my otherwise I'll probably be more tempted by the GN.

I got one a couple of weeks ago, and can't fault it at all. Very good handset, nice to hold and very fast using it. Plain Android is also a joy to use compared to what HTC and Samsung stick on top/all over it it.

If there is anything in particular you want to know, fire away :).

If you aren't worried about:

The camera quality
The storage (limited to 16GB)
The battery life
The internals being better

Then there's not much of a reason to go for the S3 over the Nexus really. There are a few other things though (like the loudspeaker and audio quality being better, etc).

Thanks for that. What's the battery life like after a couple of weeks? It's not too critical for me as I often turn data off and charge everyday in the car, but I'm still curious. My only experience so far is with my HTC Desire, so I'm not sure how it would compare with that.

The biggest plus for me is the stock ICS look and the OTA updates. I've done all the faffing about with ROMs and stuff and would rather not have to do it again. However, I don't know how the process differs these days as it was at least 18 months ago when I did all that with my HTC Desire.

The battery will probably be better than your HTC Desire, or at the very least equal.

Stock Android is great and ICS 4.0 is a big improvement over previous versions, it's excellent.

Thanks.

The camera quality - I don't use the camera now, so probably won't with my next phone.
The storage (limited to 16GB) - I use Google Music so probably not an issue.
The battery life - Unless it's dire/much worse than the HTC Desire it'll be OK for me.
The internals being better - Don't really play intensive games etc so providing it's future proofed enough for Jelly Bean I'll be happy. If not, I could probably sell it without too much loss.

Hmm, looks like I'm convincing myself here :D

You should be fine then. At the end of the day you can always sell it if you thought the Galaxy S 3 was way better.

I would suggest just waiting a week and trying an S3 out though, just so you can see for yourself. It's not long!

Cheers, I think you're right. I'll wait for more full reviews and give it a try in the shop soon.
