**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

It said it would come tomorrow dpd are going to send me a time slot, ideally I would have ordered from gstore but I want it to take pictures of little one Christmas day and i went into cpw to look at one and was more than happy with the screen coming from a n5x :)

White was out of stock locally and I have 14 day return if bought online.

Just had a look at my SOT whilst sitting waiting for weather offshore. It's currently at 4hrs and 41mins with 50% battery remaining. This is on the WiFi though but still impressive.
My N5X would have been chomping through its second charge by now.

That's another bonus as I have to give my n5x a charge when I come home from work so it will last the night.

Anyone know of anywhere I can get a cheap screen protector and clear case today in stoke, I just know IL damage if I don't get one asap :o

Anyone rooted their 2 XL? I need to install an ad blocker and assuming I need root.
Personally I'd rather wait until 2018 when Google have said they'll be incorporating their own ad blocker into chrome, it's been in development stage in Canary for a few months now. Rooting the phone can have all sorts of unwarranted problems such as android pay not working and security issues.

Magisk?

I'm looking to get a Pixel 2, first thing will be root.

So I tried Bluetooth audio for the first time today, to my Monic BT speaker. In the space of about 40 minutes I heard maybe 3 or 4 relatively loud "clicks" in the music.

Does this mirror everyone elses experience?

On 8.1

OK just to report further on this, today it was more frequent (its like a static noise), and eventually it got worse and eventually I lost the audio. I had to restart my phone, forget the speaker and re-pair it in order to get it to work.

I am using Play Music streaming so first I will try using another app, and if it does it on that, then another device to see if the problem exists on there.

There don’t appear to me many Bluetooth options to configure in the settings. I tried turning notifications and whatnot off but it seemed to get worse after I did that. Unfortunately, I don’t have another Bluetooth device to try but I would rather not buy one to find out whether it happens on something else. I’m inclined to think it won’t make any difference anyway.

Can you not try different speakers in different stores? At least you wouldn't have to purchase them.

Loving the phone so far, usual traits screen wise but not an issue for me, camera is stunning! What are the recommended clear cases and screen protectors for these :)

At work on Christmas eve I took a few photo's and people just couldn't believe the quality of the camera. Even did a portrait mode with two people that cam out amazing, both people perfectly in focus, everything else blurred out. I think I take for granted sometimes how good the camera is having had the previous Pixel too.

Yes, I too believe the camera is excellent and amazing how it uses one lens and AI rather than two lenses to achieve steller results and how the Visual Core processor adds cool features like AR Stickers.

Thinking through the issue of AI, I was interested in a comment made on a podcast I watched by a Google researcher last month. Currently AI (deep learning) requires vast amounts of data to teach the machine to evaluate a situation based on various factors and to evaluate which factors to give greater weight to. The researcher said Google has teams working on AI systems that require much less data to function, so it does not take months or years to develop new applications.

As you might recall I have been very impressed with the interaction of my Pixel Buds and Google Translate---I have tried it out with both a Spanish speaker and a Portugese speaker. For example, I have read that Google Translate now comes equipped with the ability to recognise and translate written text in real time. But to reach this stage Google had to train its systems to recognise millions of photos of texts in up to 40 languages. Google wants to train its systems using much fewer data points.

The researcher said that one of the goals of this application might be for Google Home Assistant to learn a persons habits and personality within a few weeks of interaction or by recognising a person through a camera built into Google Home.

Thinking outside the box, I assume Google will seek to distinguish its AI driving system from others with its ability to learn, anticipate and react better to real live road situations yet with fewer data points.

Assume you are following the slowdown controversy playing out around Apple iPhones lately? If not suggest you have a read over on the Apple hardware threads here on Overclockers. I note a class action lawsuit against Apple has already been filed.

It seems Apple tried to extend the life of its smarphones to protect users but failed to tell anybody. For years consumers have complained that Apple would purposely degrade the performance of older iPhones, pushing them to upgrade faster than they normally would.

This week the theory of slowing iPhones was validated by external sources and eventually corroborated by Apple. Is it that Apple purely wanted to prevent phone shutdowns or to force buyers to upgrade?

Wouldn't it have been better for Apple to design a processor that provides consistent performance throughout the life of the iPhone, even if this resulted in lower peak performance?

From what I have read, this issue does not exist in the Android ecosystem, but I assume there are people out there trying to discover if it is also an Android issue. It seems unlikely, as most flagship Android smartphones ship with much larger batteries that would lengthen the time required for the battery degradation to affect peak current draw.

Apple own-goal that could negatively affect the brand?

The whole headphone adapter issue is really annoying. Removing the headphone port (which is reliable and multifunctional) and then giving us a dongle as a replacement is not ideal, but i can live with it. Issuing a dongle that does not work reliably with the OS however is not acceptable. I shouldn't have to reboot every time I want to listen to wired audio.

As good as the phone is, the more of these issues that come up the more I wonder if Google actually tested this phone before releasing it.

You do have to wonder. I've not used the adapter much as I've often forgotten it or misplaced it so as a result I've not listened to music much on it. And as you can see from my posts above, I'm having Bluetooth issues too. I can see me RMAing it at this rate.

I've often lauded the software experience on these and sure it's bloody quick and smooth but sadly they still don't "just work" as well as a fruity phone, as much as it pains me to say it.

Sadly have to agree with this. Don't think Android will ever "just work" as iOS does.

I wonder if you might consider that it is time to move on to a wireless headphone? As you know these are extremely popular. I bought my "smart" Google Pixel Buds as soon as they were released in the UK and as I have mentioned, I am really pleased with them. The Clearly White Pixel Buds I bought are still out of stock on the Play Store, but the Black and Somewhat Blue options are available with a relatively short waiting time. I found no problems with the bluetooth and the sound quality is excellent. I particularly like the Google Assistant feature built into the Pixel Buds which is easy to operate and allows me to keep my Pixel 2 XL in my pocket for many uses.

As you probably know, Apple did the same thing and their Air Pods are also very popular.

All the same, it would be nice if the dongle worked wouldn't it
