**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

When I'm recording it looks good on the screen, then when I view it back it looks like junk. Must be some heavy compression going on.

@LiE I am noticing the same. I have noticed the same compression when cast to the TV. During the evening and darker shades the compression is very blocky. The OIS/EIS is insane and it's saving grace but the FPS options and poor exposure when scenes change and even focus needs a serious look at via a future software update. The camera is great for photos most of the time and in reality should be the same for video. The 4k option isn't much better.

The lack of manual controls is another annoyance especially when it does a slow shutter and you are trying to snap the kids playing.

Would a paid app solve these woes or does it not tap into the Google magic?

Despite all of the issues I have snapped more images in the last few weeks than I did last year! When the phone nails the correct point and shoot snap settings the results are pretty impressive.

Agreed, it does take photos with great detail, exposure and the HDR is magic... but it seems to favour slower shutter speeds to gather more light in dimmer situations resulting in blurry photos of anything that moves even a little e.g. a typical indoor photo of my son is hard to capture.

@LiE seems like your usage is the same for the Pixel. Capturing family moments with the kids. Running to get the DSLR or even the RX100 isn't always an option and with the Pixel they play up less so manage to at-least get something for the memory book. Having Google Photos means it that much easier to just snap away, edit and share. Having just checked some of the snaps a lot are 1/25 to 1/50 odd and nothing really with fast shutter indoors.

@Kieran just go in-store if you can. It isn't as bad as the earlier reports but the panel can be a lottery. Definitely order it online so easier return if yours is a dud or not happy. I went for the smaller P2 as wanted a smaller device. I just could have done with the larger battery but everything else happy with the P2.

Bigger occasions I'll bring my Fuji camera so I manage. However, taking photos yesterday at the indoor play area, most were blurry. We cannot control the shutter speed so I guess it's always going to be a limitation. I'd prefer they jacked the ISO up over the slower shutter speeds. Perhaps they will introduce different 'scenes' to help guide the auto settings.

The example I'm looking at from yesterday set the shutter at 1/33 and ISO at 400. So plenty of room for the ISO to go up and the shutter to be faster.

Really considering picking up a Pixel 2 XL upgrading from a Nexus 6p however I'm worried I will be annoyed by the blue tint of the screen. Is it really something that is noticeable?

Give it 3 hours and you will forget about any blue tint.

Cheers for sharing how using the Pixel. Most of mine are also 1/33 when snapping in the living room. I will give some of the free camera apps a go that allow manual control to see what they can do.

What Fuji camera and lenses do you use to shoot the kids? I have a X-T20 but wanted to upgrade from the 16-50 and 27mm 2.8 and combine with the Pixel. The RX100 is solely for video until the Pixel can product something more decent.

I may try burst mode next time there is some indoor movement to see if it can capture something usable.

I have an X-E2S with the 35mm 2.0. It's a pretty compact setup that works well in pretty much all scenarios.

Here's a photo I took recently with the Pixel 2, love the HDR magic. Just a quick snap as I was walking back to the car to test it's ability to capture lower light. https://photos.app.goo.gl/zLoNlk0nBuhF03Mn1

I tried the burst mode last weekend and haven't bothered again. It was a total mess. It locked focus but when kids moves it turned into a blurred mess. I am aware no phone will do it to the level of a dedicated device so am happy can get moments for when wouldn't want to lug any extra kit.

That HDR magic is what I am finding. Also motion in the images is fun to remember some moments even though resolution when converted to video is poor.

Using portrait mode for non portrait stuff also works to bring in the view closer.

The 23/50 2.0 were on the radar but that 35 sounds like a good all rounder.

Depends a bit on the blue tint lottery. I've had two Pixel 2XL units and the first one was noticeably worse than the second one. Still, if it's bad, send it back and get another. The phone is great.

Well after owning my 2XL for about a month and a half the screen just decided to go all on its own, green flashy bits on the black and black smudges on the white and a weird green bleeding in the corner. No problems at all with my screen untill it decided to just do this whilst I was browsing :( Hope this is just a one off, but not confidence filling either.

Mine once when like that when I ran the battery down to 0%

Only thing that bugs me is the pictures seem to be a mess folder wise when I pull them from the phone manually.

Prior to owning the xl2 it was all in one folder. Now they seem to be all in individual folders

Does anyone know if I download from Google photos web browser if they are 100% the same quality?

Got the Jan security patch this evening, I think this fixes the issue of "Check for update" as well.

Got a Panda XL yesterday coming from a Iphone 6s that was great until the slow down and battery draining that came with the latest IOS
It seems a good phone but I do have a particularly blue tint screen though, even at slight angles the colours change a lot.
will see how much it annoys me though before I think about taking it back.

Another thing I don't like is the video quality when watching Netflix or Twitch seems pretty poor quality, no where near as sharp as the 6s...am I missing some hidden settings or something?

The main thing I want to know and what bothers me is how private and safe my photos are on the google photos cloud? Seems they are stored with public urls?!
Can't be right can it?
