**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Did anyone else notice what appears to be a transparent widget at the top of the Pixel 2 XL display for calendar (next appointment) and weather? Is this going to be more of a ticker than a display, if it updates after that first appointment finishes?

This is made possible due to moving the search bar to the bottom of the screen, which I think makes sense as it is easier for me to reach.

Also anyone else notice that the icon we saw in last week's leak for Google Lens is not shown? Does this mean that it will either be opt-in or will it be revealed in full later than this week's event?

Hang on, do you think that this is stopping you RMAing to Google?

I don't know if it's any different with the Pixel as opposed to the Nexus but Google absolutely will not accept a CPW Nexus 6P for a hardware issue. They were very helpful trying to fix the issue over the phone and emails, but ultimately they passed me across to Huawei.

This one is going to come down to price for me, for the XL in particular. If it's more than £700 I'm not going to be happy.

I might get the non-XL if the XL is too expensive, but it will have to be something pretty special.

Yeah this is my thinking. It HAS to be something special to warrant the price but pure speculation on the price at this point.
Let's see what tomorrow brings, but for the first time in many years I have the willpower to say no. My expectations of a £700+ phone at this point is set now. If google fail to deliver, I will honestly walk away.

My mind has been chopping and changing over the past few weeks until I realised nobody is forcing me to buy a non perfect product.

Yeah, you're right. I replaced my Pixel with an S8 a couple of months ago so I think I'm pretty future-proofed as far as the new Pixels go. They might end up being better, but I doubt they'll be hundreds of pounds better than my £480 S8.

They are owned by Dixons and have their own mobile repair factory in place (it's just down the road from my house). We know it's software so I figured it would be a waste of time going in.
I've created yet another thread on the pixel forums. https://productforums.google.com/fo...gZAuoDmWY;context-place=forum/phone-by-google

Googles handling of this has been shocking, in fact their customer services is like most other android manufacturers.....disgusting.

This is the non original thread they locked (the first one, mine, they deleted)

If you go into the chat function via your handset I found them quite helptful, despite my phone being from CPW. When they asked if I had approached CPW I told them they weren't interested, had zero stock etc and google in fairness dealt with it

To be honest, yes I did.....although I have read a lot of reports on the google forums that google are not accepting returns as it's software bugs!

Okay. I managed to RMA my EE bought pixel to Google but it was a hardware issue (screen burn in).

Pixel 2 October 19th & Pixel 2 XL November 15th.
nlike Apple, Google tends to hold just a single major hardware launch per year — and just like last year’s event, this one will also be held on October 4. The range of products expected to debut include a mini connected speaker, a laptop, refreshed VR headset, and more… but what always interests us most are the phones. The event is scheduled to be livestreamed on YouTube beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific.

For the second year in a row, the stars of Google’s hardware showcase will be a pair of own-branded smartphones dubbed Pixels, specifically the Google Pixel 2(pictured above) and Pixel 2 XL (pictured below). Manufactured by HTC and LG, respectively — and codenamed Walleye and Taimen — these two stock Android 8 Oreo handsets were originally planned to showcase an iterative new system-on-chip from Qualcomm called the Snapdragon 836 (just as their predecessors were first out of the gate sporting the Snapdragon 821).

Because of an alleged delay in the rollout of that silicon, however, both Pixel 2 and 2 XL will instead utilize the same chipset as the LG V30 and all threeSamsung flagships this year, the Snapdragon 835.

With a five-inch, 1080p display, Pixel 2 is the smaller of the devices, featuring a screen whose aspect ratio is the formerly standard 16:9. Pixel 2 XL, meanwhile, should have a six-inch, QHD+ display in an 18:9 aspect ratio, making it more competitive with this year’s other top-of-range handsets. While this gives XL 2 a reduced bezel profile, it still falls short of being the true edge-to-edge device that some may be hoping for.

Otherwise, the two phones are quite similar, at least on paper: 4GB of RAM, either 64GB or 128GB of storage, and 12-megapixel primary rear cameras, along with front-firing stereo speakers. According to Droid Life, they’ll be priced at $649/$749 (Pixel 2) and $849/$949 (Pixel 2 XL), depending on capacity. And according to a person familiar with Google’s release plans, they’ll see a staggered rollout: October 19 for Pixel 2 and November 15 for Pixel 2 XL, both preceded by preorder periods.

The spec to price ratio is just not good enough for me. I don't mind paying top dollar for a phone, but it'd better be worth it.

Other than the bezels and possibly dual front speakers I don't see what the rumoured XL2 is offering that is a noticeable improvement on the original XL?
Yes there's a CPU bump but not the one we were all expecting/hoping for and the RAM is still 4gb. Also having seen the S8/Note 8 I'm not keen on this 18.5:9 aspect ratio, not keen at all. If anything I'd love a phone to come out with 16:10!

64GB vs. 32GB (lowest storage tier), waterproofing (probably). But yes, there isn't as much as there could be - wireless charging, SD card etc. although Google doesn't like those so no surprise there. Hopefully the camera will have OIS.

It amazes me that nobody seems to be able to make that one phone that combines all of the best components to make a phone that people want to buy even at the price levels being talked of at the moment. Every year I think 'this will be the year' and every year, I am disappointed, yet again!

I really, really want a new toy, but there's literally nothing worth dropping this sort of money for. I've got everything crossed for tomorrow but really, I already feel its inevitable that it will be a let down. Prove me wrong google!

I bought it from carphone warehouse, what a mistake

For anyone that may not be aware, if you bought your handset from CPW then they will be unable to repair the handset. All CPW will do is send the phone to Google for repair/replacement. What you are better off doing, is requesting an RMA from Google direct (do it through the support facility on your handset). Google will handle the RMA direct and you can cut CPW right out the loop. Google will ask for a copy of your receipt, and if you no longer have the receipt then pop in to any CPW store and they'll print you one off on provision of your IMEI number.

Obviously, it's Google's discretion whether your RMA request is valid i.e. if it's a software issue.

Yep, I hear you!

My perfect phone would be this

iPhone X internals
Front, display and DAC from an LG V30
Rear of an iPhone 8
Pixel software (but only if it is bug free)
SD Card reader and headphone hack

I purchased from CPW as well. Have you been into them about your Pixel issues? That was my next plan but I'm guessing you're going to tell me it's a waste of time :(

I'm on google chat. Will let you know how I get on

:edit: Google are sending me a brand new XL

Just said bluetooth not working in my car, wifes car or work car. Performed factory reset and still the same. Other issues include crashing and notifications coming through in bulk every few hours. Woman on chat said since you have done a factory reset we will replace with a brand new one. Took my IMEI number and said the system is only replacing with the XL now is that ok? said hell yeah!! haha

Haha nice one! Google support are pretty good. Another reason I won't choose anything other than Pixel when it comes to Android.

That's great! What way did they leave it with you? Do they collect your current phone and ship a replacement after or is it a straight doorstep swap?
