**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

I think it's plastic. Unfortunately after reading far too many reviews, it seems the samsung screen is much better. That and the v30 is having issues with bleed. Hopefully the xl2 is ok.

Slightly off topic, did anyone follow the privacy complaints around the Chinese phone company OnePlus with respect to its phones sold outside China?

OnePlus decided to include code in OxygenOS that captured and uploaded: IMEI, serial number, MAC addresses, IMSI and WiFi network data in addition to which apps were being opened and what the user was doing in those apps. This data was being uploaded and analysed by OnePlus without either the knowledge or consent of its users.

OnePlus is a subsidiary of Oppo, like Vivo, and is owned by BK Electronics. Apparently this is not being done however by Oppo, which sells many of its phones outside China.

In China, all services collect and analyse user data without user permission.

Just cultural differences?

So I went in to the Google Store this lunch time. Had quite a chat with the manager, nice guy.

He got me one out of the cupboard, so I could sit and play (and film). Video coming soon.

Glad you made it to the Google Store and look forward to watching your video in due course.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. Software improvements aside I'm keen on understanding the hardware changes and how it improves the experience.

How much faster is it compared to the 821
How much better is the camera (ignoring portrait mode)
Any screen uniformity issues and how does it compare with say the galaxy s8 (in real world use)
Does it really feel plasticky like they all say
Would you imagine inserting the phone into a car window mount would activate the GA (any issues)

Basically, im summary, if the original pixel xl had the EXACT software and features how does it stack up?

Thanks!!!

My local EE had both on demo but weren't charged up! Will be going back later his week to test. The XL felt decent and not overly large. It similar in size to an iPhone 8+ but felt easier to hold. The fit and finish seemed decent also. Shame can't really have either until stock sorts itself out.

I can tell you it felt good in the hand, no, not plasticky, although I didn't hold the white, which looked amazing.

Most of what you want to know will have to wait for a full review though I think. Video just encoding now.

I can also state that it didn't feel cheap or plastic. It has some good weight to it and felt solid. Hopefully a decent bumper is released as wouldn't mind going without a full case and design on back is decent.

I was a little annoyed afterwards, I thought of a few other things I could have tested, like installing Geekbench for example. I actually took my sound and light meters with me, but was taking enough of their time already, so they can wait until I get my own I guess.

Happy to take feedback on the video. Thanks :)

Dbrand are marketing their new 'Grip' at the moment. No idea on cost yet but looks like exactly what you're after.

Good work, thanks for making the video. I'll watch later :)

Cheers for the heads up on the Dbrand 'grip'

Anyone getting their Pixel via EE? Going to ring this week to see what deal can get to see if works out decent over a sim only and phone via Google.

I don't want to order but I want to at the same time! Uchhh. Just need a phone with a decent camera.

Brilliant video. Would I be right in saying like the original pixel it looks so much better in the flesh.

Ignoring the software, is it worth the upgrade purely based on hardware.

I think that is the question to consider when weighing up the difference between the two. It doesn't really matter what the difference is with software because the 1st gen Pixels will run the same software, surely? For example, we can't expect that Google would market the Pixel Buds translation abilities to work only with the 2 most recent Google handsets, it just doesn't make sense to do that.
