Notch does not bother me apart from its yet another copy of what apple has done. Google don't need to be following them with everything they do.

I will be getting one of the phones. Undecided on which yet
 
Pretty sure the notch design was finalised well before the PH-1 was released, that being a Foxconn design I believe which was eventually also licenced to Sharp. That design is not even a notch, and is a lot more discreet then Apple's.

And you think 99.999% would know that? Apple mainstream things. The iPhone itself is a prime example of that. My point stands Google mock them and then follow suit. Which is the bit that bugs me.

Likely because people dont care about the Andy Rubens Essential Phones notch, Android manufacturers aren't imitating that notch.
The iPhone X's notch is clearly the one, thats caused a shift in the market.

Essential phones irelevant, regardless of what they did "first".
 
And that's my point. Doesn't it bother you (and honestly it doesn't bother me much) that people just automatically give Apple credit for things that have been done by others before? You guys are essentially saying that Apple invented the notch.
 
If Apple didn't incorporate the notch there wouldn't be so many copycats. It's pretty obvious. No one really cares which company invented it, if Apple implement it will get the most coverage.

Even if its not the notch but something else like wireless charging. It's only since Apple incorporated it has there been more development and availability in public places etc. We just have to accept that Apple dominates the minds of the average Joe and industry when it comes to smartphones.

Also, there should be no credit for inventing the notch anyway, just backlash.

We're not going to agree, so I'll try and make this my last post on it. I disagree and you're kind of backing my point. Someone else does something, then Apple does it, everyone says Apple invented it (often including Apple). Just because they made it big, doesn't mean they invented or should get the credit for it. Like when Apple Pay came along. Many of us have been using the technology for years, especially in the UK, but so many people going on about how great it is and literally commenting on Apple creating it.

Yes...? And...? I commented comparing one company designed it against when another company launched it is not a good way to decide who had it first...? What is your point?

Here's a question maybe someone can help with

Rumours are that Apples upcoming LCD iPhone doesn't have a chin. Their engineers have found a way to relocate the connector behind the LCD panel. World first? Up until now I believe it was only possible to be done with OLED (even though even android can't figure out how)....which again confuses me as Apple outsources the screens to the same people who make android phones.

Help as my head is exploding!

Notches don't bother me (only the leaked pixel 3xl as that is huge), but notches with chins do bother me

Nobody cares who invented it. Kona was 100% correct and the only reason Andy is disagreeing with is because he can't read. It's not about who did it first, it's about Apple doing it and other following. Daft it is as well - notches look awful no matter what device they are on.

At least the Apple has a notch for a reason, the TrueDepth features, Android phones just have the standard cameras etc in a notch.

As for the screens, just because Samsung or other manufacturers actually make them, it doesn’t mean they can just copy Apple’s designs.

Samsung was manufacturing some of the Apple phone chips but they couldn’t just copy them for their own uses, same for the screens.

Samsung managed to pack in iris scanners and ir emitters without the need for a notch or fat bezels. There's no need for it, it's only there to play one-up on the screen to body ratio game. The thing is, most of us don't care.

If the X didn’t have the notch you would lose viewable screen, how is that preferable? At the moment I’m gaining space either side of the cameras that I wouldn’t if the notch wasn’t there and the entire top area was bezel, I prefer having the notch.

Because without a notch you have a nice straight edge, giving you more horizontal width to play with on the screen. Notches force you to display certain things in certain places. screens without notches dont have that issue. Ie, i can display the time in the middle of the notification bar - try that on an iPX. also, full screen video...without a chunk missing.
