**** The Official Google Pixel 3 Thread ****

Even if its just an app, In the end I still find Nova Launcher a better and smoother experience than most of the UIs out there. Incidentally when I referred to 'usage' and 'efficiency' previously I meant user interaction not system resources.

Launchers are all down personal preference. My favourite is the pixel launcher, which is ONLY available on pixel phones.
Yes, there are young lads in their bedrooms who rip them from the adks and host on xda. That's nothing like the same thing as being fully supported by a huge team of professional engineers.

Nova is ok(ish), but I still prefer pixel. Lawnchair or Azaidis rootless are close, but they are not as good and buggy.

Finally got display units in my local O2 store so just had a play with them this morning. For me the 3 is just too small. No doubting it's a lovely phone and for anyone who prefers a smaller phone I'd 100% recommend it. But I know after a month of owning it I'd miss the bigger screen.
As for the XL, pffft. Don't know what to make of it. The display is very nice although I wouldn't just say it's night and day between it and my 2XL. But the notch...
I think the thing I liked most about the 3XL display was the fact it was flat, properly flat.

Hi everyone, Ordered the Pixel 3 XL 64GB in Just Black from the Google Store, on October 12th for delivery around 5th - 6th November, also Ordered the Pixel 3 XL Fabric Case in Carbon from the Google Store, on October 11th for delivery around 6th - 7th November.

Damn, was really hoping they'd move past this - it does my head in on the 2 XL. All well and great having a SD 835, but when you're reloading your apps 24/7, it feels a heck of a lot slower...

So, getting mildly anxious that I haven't received the voucher email I contacted Google store support

  • ME: I registered for marketing emails for the pixel 3 and subsequently ordered a pixel xl, I understand this entitles me to a £75 voucher for the google store?
  • Google Guy: I'd like to inform you that, Select customers who opted in to receive marketing emails from Google Store are eligible. However, please note that being opted in does not guarantee your eligibility for this promotion.
  • Google Guy: I certainly understand the situation you're in. However, if there was an alternative for this, I'd have surely helped you with it.
  • ME: So, is there a chance I might get the email?
  • ME: and what is the criteria for getting one?
  • Google Guy: opting in to marketing emails is the only criteria. However, I wouldn't be able to speculate that you'll receive an email.

That's extremely confusing, as I was told a while back that it didn't matter about closing apps on android as the memory was only used when apps were being used? ie: when you open say chrome and spotify, if your using spotify then the memory for chrome is moved over and chrome goes into a frozen state.

To be honest, I thought it was a load of bull when I was being told about it.....in fact, I think someone on here said it

Maybe they did this because of the 4gb of ram?

anyways....I never play games on my phone so I think I'll be ok

As I understand it: Anything open in the background, in a 'frozen state' as you said will still consume some memory. The OS will re-use that memory when an onscreen or active application requires some more RAM. So the more 'frozen' apps you have in the background, the more likely one or more will be closed when memory is required to do something else.

nothing to be anxious about, you wont be getting it really is all you should be thinking. same for me and the many others on here. disappointing to be honest, given they give youtube red for x amount of months free, but can't be used by current users either, so that's another waste of an offer from google.

i spoke with google about something else, and their reply was...

"I certainly understand the situation you're in. However, if there was an alternative for this, I'd have surely helped you with it."

seems they are using a standard script, but one that i don't think reads too well. i'd have surely helped you doesn't sound pleasant

Did you get the email offering:

Interestingly there's a disclaimer at the bottom that has in it 'Only while supply lasts'. Which is a bit misleading if they offer you a £75 voucher as an incentive that may never turn up...

Starting to get more and more concerned with my order. The pixel 3 is just sounding worse and worse as time goes by. Video and audio I'll get over, but apps not being able to stay open/loaded up and potentially poor battery life is a huge concern for me. Let's not forget these are expensive flagship phones. Not sure what to do.. Im not sure it's justifying the cost or stock android from what I've read and heard. I'm awaiting mkbhd and Mr mobile full review then make my mind up.

The app limitations is nothing new and it IS real. My 2XL doesn't keep background apps open either, it was one of the few things that I actually liked about the Note 9 that apps stayed open and web pages didn't reload every time I opened up Chrome.
I tend to not use a lot of apps so 90% of the time it doesn't get in the way but I do find that if my phone has been idle for maybe 3-4 hours when I open it up all bar 1 or 2 of the apps that were open have all been closed. Chrome web pages are a bit of a faff sometimes mind you.
