*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Ok, so this is my issue. Why is it that you can flash the same ROM twice and have different user experiences especially WRT battery life?

I have ODv2.3 and then flashed the supercircle battery over the top.

I have no widgets and have turned off 3G, etc. I unplugged this morning at 6am and the batter is now at 92%. I've not used the phone yet.

Other things that make me know things aren't right. When charging the phone, the homescreen says (no sim) although at the top, the Vodafone UK appears with full network.

The unlock slide says "ABC" when you slide it and the sound off slide says "ALT" when you slide it. When you press and hold the power button, there is no power off in the menu. Only Airplane mode, Android System, Sound.

I'm tempted to flash again and will probably end up with a load of different results?

right so someone please explain rooting to me and why its worth my while? i know its about getting the latest and greatest roms but surely you spend half your time on the phone dicking about trying to get a solid rom??? doesnt sound like fun to me....

i made a goldcard last night and am tempted to go all the way...
my issues are:

how can i back up all my phone stuff? contacts/games etc......
how can i back up my old os from o2?
no roms with htc sense yet?

You don't need a goldcard but if rooting doesn't sound like fun then you're probably the kind who will encounter countless issues for some unknown reason and flag rooting as Satan's plaything :p

Rooting gives many things, been discussed many many times in this thread and others so have a quick backtrack, look at screenshots of rooted phones (they'll be pretty obvious).

not entirely useful there, i used to jailbreak my iphones all the time with no problems. im confident in adb shell and know my pc stuff. iv followed this thread for a long time and i keep on seeing people not happy with their roots and chopping and changing os.

and what of backing up stuff?? especially the o2 modded os?

You don't need to put anouther ROM and play about. But a lot of people do because you can get a faster phone, with better battery, and remove things like the sense UI (I have, i think it's fugly, much prefer stock Android)

And when your rooted you can do extra things APP wise too, like taking screenshots to show off things :p

Overclocking/Underclocking
Using your phone as a wirless modem (I think you need root for this?)
Callblocker to stop unwanted calls
etc. etc.

For backups i use Titaniumbackup (needs root)

There are plenty of ROMs with HTC sense if that's what you want :) both 2.1 and 2.2

If you were happy jailbreaking iPhones then why did you say rooting an Android sounds like it won't be fun or worthwhile?

Rooting via unrevoked is simple and pretty much one click if you've installed the adb usb driver and hboot driver or you can use the riskfree root method discussed on Modaco.

If you root via unrevoked you can go into recovery and create a backup of the current OS via Nandroid and restore later.

Yes, there are a few Sense ROMs available running 2.2

You can nandroid backup your current stuff, like taking an image of a PC and restore at any time if you don't like it, this covers both your first two points.

I think by him saying it not being worth while, is because everything you can do on an iPhone that you have jailbroken (like theming, 3rd party apps etc.) you can already do out the box on Android :)

yes to a point. my main point was about people constantly swapping there roots.

so people saying i can create a backup os copy via Nandroid only when rooted? but as soon as i root i lose my o2 modded os and wont be able to back it up???

Rooting won't lose the O2 stock ROM if you use unrevoked. You don't swap your root either, just Nandroid backup the current ROM from Recovery and flash a new one and restore back via Nandroid if it doesn't offer anything you like.

Mines playing up again, after I had the issue with the screen staying off after a call (couldn't hang up) I did a factory reset, that seemed to do the trick but now it's at it again :(

Have tried factory reset a few times again but this time it's not fixing it, looks like this time it really does have to go back.

Do I send it back to Orange or HTC? I guess I'll phone Orange later to find out.

Absolutely love the phone, this is driving me mad though.

Ok so i've just ordered this on Mobiles.co.uk

£35pm for 18 months. 400 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited web data, with a free 8gb memory card and free sat nav.

Just a quick question. The contract im currently on is £10pm more than this one ( and ends in october - this is the ornage upgrade). with this one being £35pm how will it work?. I don't want to be chaged ~£75 for 2 phones !

Sounds like the light sensor is whacked ?

Google nav is now imo better than most other nav solutions for smartphones. Maps 4.4.0 added some cool ena features like Navigation view via Nav when you're not navigating which is very nice, a Places launcher for Maps to find local places and a lot more new POI style info droppers on layers you enable in maps.

I've probably used Google Navigation for a few thousand miles by now and never had an issue :p
