*** The Official HTC One M8 Thread ***

As long as it comes with the USB cable that'll do me. I've got a wall socket to USB 2amp anyway which I can use.

If you could have a look in the box and see if it has a back cover protector/case that would be great. I've always been one to cover up my phones as soon as I get them. So of it doesn't come with one I can grab one ASAP.

Thanks!

I just cant help but feel like there must be something 'bigger' coming this year. Most yearly upgrades are pretty significant power wise over their predecessors yet this snapdragon 801...may aswell just have been released last year.

Are there no new chips out for phones this year? I mean like a big bump in power etc? Dont wanna upgrade to this to find that 3 months down the line something twice as powerful is out :|

The 801 has a lot of changes other then pure speed, firstly it has a lot of battery improvements, M8 is topping some charts with just a 2600mha, the rams a lot faster, it has much faster storage, faster GPU and so on.

The biggest upgrade will be the 805. I think that is coming in Q3, either way the power from the 801 is already stupidly overkill for 99% of what your doing so I would hardly worry.

I thought it was the same gpu as the 800.

Anyone here get theirs from O2?

Got a question about firmware.

Ships with 1.12.206.17 , but the actual current is 1.54.206.5

Meant to include the extreme power mode and day one fixes. I cannot for the life of me get the update to push through. It's pretty annoying.

I would have got one of these if they had upped the megapixel count for the camera but i am sadly saying goodbye to my HTC One and opting for an Xperia Z2 this year.

The One is a great phone and the camera is actually good, but as soon as you look at pictures on abig screen ( monitor/tv) the pictures are awfully grainy and low resolution.

I cant believe they didnt up the pixel count this year :(

Build quality?

I picked up a sim free M8 yesterday from Phones4U.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any problems with build quality.
I've noticed on my phone the screen sits quite low on the top left and a little proud on the top right, it's not perfectly even on the bottom either, the bottom is a lot better that the top but not perfect.

I would have expected the screen to line up nicely with the speaker grill parts.
Maybe I'm I just expecting too much or are others seeing the same issue.

I haven't opened one yet, but as far as I remember, no charger, as o2 and most manufactures (that arnt Samsung and apple ) have this "eco" bs about most people having chargers already. Comes with the cable though. Have a go at customer services, they usually send one out for free if you do, but it will be generic, though should be 2a.

Refresh price works out decent, even better from a franchise o2 store as they can knock off upfront costs, so all your paying for the phone is 480, plus you get the voucher for 100 in house of fraiser.

I'm working tomorrow, so will find it exactly what's in the box then.

It's certainly not BS because of this...

You'd have to have been living in a cave to not have any USB mains plugs.

The environmental impact of extracting oil from the ground, sending it to china, having them make it into a plug and then sailing it all the way to us just for most people to chuck it in a drawer or leave it in the box is unbelievable.

Mine should be here tomorrow so I can check then for you. Don't suppose yours came with a protective case? I've seen some reviews that do and some that don't.

It's bs for us trying sell or even make a customer aware that they are paying for a product, and not reciveing a staple product. The reason I say it's bs was because although they label it as eco, it's just too save them money. For those that are getting smartphones for the first time (of which there are many) it's frustrating that t hatter have to pay for a charger from us, as an extra. Though don't deny any points you have given.

Well I work pretty closely with O2 and I'd personally say that it isn't BS to save money, they certainly seem to believe their eco credentials hence me having to go through loads of information exchange over the contents of the inks on our packaging, constantly being pushed to reduce cardboard waste in packaging, making boxes smaller etc etc.

I don't deny the side effect of potentially cheaper products and maybe the odd attached sale of a charger is a happy side effect but then there are supposed to be lots of happy side effects to saving the planet ending in the big one, a saved planet.

Actually it wouldn't surprise me if there was little to no saving on a wholesale basis for O2 as they're demanding a unique SKU just for them which I suspect demands a premium.

Although companies like Motorola seem to be doing this on a broader basis, I think the Moto G comes without a mains plug in all markets.

I applaud it.. If they make a bit out of it, good for them.

Well I've had my M8 for a couple of days now. Coming from the M7 it certainly feels familiar (even though my M7 was a GPe conversion). I opted for gun metal grey rather than silver.

I've been impressed with it so far. Silky smooth interface even over my M7. The Boomsound speakers are an improvement for me. They sound much deeper than the M7 even though I was totally satisfied with their performance.

Camera wise I've only taken a few snaps but they're perfectly adequate for me. Quick point and shoot snaps and are good enough especially as I only really view the images on my phone or social networks. Some of the effects are very 'gimmicky' and the ufocus isn't perfect but I'm hoping software will improve this. I also hear that the API for Ufocus will be open for other app developers to use so who knows what application people might put this to.

Most impressive has been the battery. I'm genuinely astonished at how good it is. My phone was fully charged yesterday morning and as of now I have 40% remaining which is seriously impressive especially considering that I've been using it a fair bit.

My only issue is that the top speaker grill doesn't quite sit flush against the screen. It is slightly raised. I pushed the grill down slightly and it clipped in at the top of the phone so it is significantly better. To be honest it's barely noticable.

I'm fairly sure I got a charger in the box (although I've not opened it to confirm. I was also presently surprised to find a rubber case for the phone and a an offer for a free BoomBass speaker!

So far I'm very pleased with it and it's a nice upgrade from my last phone.

I've now tried one of these and they are lovely. The build, the screen, the speed.

The camera seemed okay, looking on the screen and comparing it to my iPhone 5, the pictures seemed similar but the HTC had more detail in dimmer light. If you have a bright picture and zoom in, the detail isn't as good, but the iPhone picture doesn't look great anyway. So it'll do.

I'll probably grab one in the week. Three confirmed they're all unlocked and £459.99 I think it was - bargain.

I did compare it to the S5 as well, and the only thing I'd want from there is the camera, nothing else.

I'm glad to hear yours seems better than mine. I've attempted to press the screen and the speaker grill down but the screen still dips down on the left and up on the right, I remember having something similar with first M7 :(

As I got the M8 from a high street retailer I can't just return it as I could under DSR, I've still got a M8 on preorder from an etailer, I think I'll let that one be delivered and hope it's better than this one, if so I'll out the shop bought one on the bay as they seem to be fetching good money at the moment, by the time all that has happened I should have got most of my money back to pay my credit card bill :D

Oh yes, my M8 had a UK charger and a nice gel case included, nice one htc. I always find it frustrating when a nice new phone is released and you can't get a good case for it for ages.

My brother had no end of trouble with his M7. Sharp edges and not sitting flush. I think he sent 2 back before he just gave up and settled. Again, I was lucky as mine was pretty much perfect.

You should still be able to return the phone shouldn't you? It has a slight manufacturing defect after all. I wouldn't be surprised if they just swapped it for you in the shop for a new one which doesn't suffer with this problem.

The differences between the S800 and S801 is actually pretty big, even though it uses the same CPU/GPU: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7846/...-snapdragon-800-and-801-clearing-up-confusion

To summarise:

More mature 28nm process, meaning higher speeds and less power consumption
Support for faster internal memory and RAM speed
Hardware support of dual-SIM and dual-active.

So even though it's not a big step from the S800, it contains many improvements that makes the SoC more efficient.

S805 was announced before the 801, but it's still in the testing stages so we won't see these until the later half of this year. But thanks to the improvements in the S801 it should hopefully make the S805 even better.

Yeah I got mine from O2 switched on and they was an update. After couple mins setup I installed it and now have the extreme power etc.
I have a mate on Three and also getting same thing update not showing, maybe the pulled it?

Pretty happy with my M8 so far, had a bit of teething trouble trying to connect to car Bluetooth (ie: it wouldn't) 3G nano sim now replaced with a pimped up 4G version, camera is also fine for my requirements.

Not very keen on the supplied gel (dust magnet) cover so need to source a decent case/cover, intrigued by the Dot View Cover but not sure if it floats my boat, will have to wait and see....
