I don't recall ever having an issue with a day one iOS upgrade. Not saying it doesn't happen to other folks but it hasn't to me!

Yep, not had any issues.

You have to customise your home screen and choose the "automatic" (or "dark") option for icons.

Got to Home Screen, press and hold on empty space, press edit top left, customise, then select dark (or system if system dark mode is enabled).
