*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

I'm quite interested in the new iPad, but as someone who has never owned another Apple product...how possible is it to use just the iPad? I have no interest in iTunes or anything like that. Is it possible to sync it with stuff like Winamp and not have to use any Apple software? Or would I be missing out on functionality?

I've just thrown mine at my iMac and it's chipped a little bit off the side, it's tiny but I'll always know its there!

Going to have to get a case for the back ASAP.

I even took my wedding ring off to use it so as not to scratch the back. I don't know why I bothered now :(

Thrown it?

So my first impressions so far (new iPad user, 32Gb Wifi)

- If you want a premium feeling device, then this is it. Until we start getting other unibody/ceramic cased tablets then this will not be matched. It just oozes quality. You want to hold it.

- Speaking of holding it, the weight adds to the premium feel, of course. However, it is undeniably heavy. I don't know how it compares to iPad 2, and I don't know what is considered a 'reasonable' amount of time to expect to keep holding a tablet, but I guess it could get weary at some point more quickly than other devices.

- The screen is immense. I'm not having a go at people who say they couldn't tell the difference even side by side, but it is pretty obvious... I was looking at an iPad 2 in a shop the other day, and while it is not a poor display, the fact you can even make out any pixels compared to not being able to do so on the new iPad is a difference I can remember clearly without even having them side by side.

- Don't know how the battery used to fare on iPad 2, but I charged my iPad up to 100% when it arrived, has been on pretty much the best part of the last 6 hours, at now on 91%. Note that I have only been browsing, watching YouTube and downloading apps. Not played any games yet.

- Dictation works remarkably well. Still getting the hang of punctuation commands etc though, not always registering.

- Multi touch gestures are nice, but as I said earlier, there's only three, I would like to see more.

- Can't wait to jailbreak it.

What the...?

Anyone tried to view a PDF through Adobe Reader? I have large black horizontal stripes across the page as though it's struggling to scale it to full screen.

Very odd.

I notice John Lewis is two year warranty as standard with the ipad, I take it the 2nd year is just with them and you cannot take it to apple?

^^^ wow - shocking. I'd be pretty unhappy about that.

oh dear me a new product delivered like that! nasty stuff.

Is there a time limit to report the fault? The reason I ask is I can't make it to an Apple store until the middle of next month due to work and a I'm away on a short holiday. I won't take any of the protective covers off due to the manufacturing defect to prove it arrived like that.

Should I just make a Genius Bar appointment and get it swapped out in person or can I do it on-line/phone? I ordered it on-line.

Sad to hear uk mail has failed some people, had almost lost faith when mine turned up. Be nice if they gave app store cards to those affected but doubt their PR is that good.

Just noticed this after setting up  :o :(

Ring Apple support and ask for a replacement that is unacceptable!

They are still delivering in London, 2 of my mates have had theirs delivered in the last 15 mins.

If you have received a defective unit, take it to a nearby apple store with receipt and don't go to genius bar. go straight to the cashiers or assistants on the shop floor and explain the situation. If you go to the genius bar, they'll replace the device with a "remanufactured unit" which looks as new but has different parts. Make sure you take all the trimmings with the pad (as you received it).
