*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

After a weekend of playing with my new iPad, I can say I'm extremely impressed with the product. This is coming from somebody who really dislikes Apple.

But when it came down to it, I've been looking for a portal media device since last year, something to read my comics on, watch films, sky go on the go an to generally browse. I'd obviously looked at all the android alternatives, but when the new iPad got announced, you could immediately tell this was the step ahead in visual quality I'd been looking for.

The screen is ridiculously nice, I don't think anything is surpassing this at least this year, it is an absolute dream to look at and view content on.

I've tested my comics, they all look and read superbly on this screen, I couldn't have settled for any less. A little App called Comic Zeal was the one I chose btw.

I think my only gripe to date, is the lack of 1080p Mkv playback, I've managed to get them on using AVPlayerHD App which has Mkv support, however unlike 720p they do not play smoothly, does anybody reckon at a later date this could be resolved? Or an alternative solution...

It's very unlikely apple will develop support for MKV as they want you to use their 1080p videos which are M4V i believe.

They work flawlessly and i can stream them over my wifi from iTunes without issue.

perhaps consider a decent converter and add them to iTunes?

Yeah I have converters, but they take about 2 hours to convert a 1080p file into the MP4 format. Which isn't too brilliant for my CPU longevity in my opinion :p

Just figured hopefully down the line that something like AVplayerHD who have enabled an ability to play 720p Mkv files on the older iPad, could be able to do the same with 1080p for the new iPad.

does the iPad charger charge the iPhone any quicker?

i'm presuming the iPhone charger charges the iPad Slower?

Not in my experience, iphone charger charges pad a lot slower. It will take about 6 hours to charge my ipad with the phone charger and just over an hour on the phillips dock I have. Phone charges the same on either, roughly an hour or so from flat.

hard back covers won't work, you just can't quite click on that final corner.

sleeves are more forgiving and the smart covers work just fine.

i found a clear belkin back cover designed for the 3rd gen and it snaps on just fine

I would expect eventually the developer will add hardware decode support for the new iPad, I assume that's what's missing. 720p plays ok in CPU s/w decode but not powerful enough for 1080p. Assuming the iPad 2 will playback 1080p fine in this app because the dev has had time to add hw decode support.

Assumptions galore!

still waiting! will be delivered tomorrow now.

got a £70.00 refund from Apple which is probably not much more than my actual costs.

Invision® iPad 2 Smart Case CoverTM

Does anyone know if this cover fits and the magnets work? (some covers fit but the sleep/wake function doesnt work apparently).

Stupid TNT, I put my work address to get it delivered last Friday, they couldn’t make it and I was told they were going to redeliver it next Monday. Today I check the website and it says they were trying to get it delivered last Saturday when the place I work in is closed. So I call them today and they can try to redeliver it tomorrow. I am fuming now as I could have just walk to the shop last Friday and just grab one, instead I have to deal with morons over the telephone and my ipad is nowhere to be seen.

Better than nothing. Any other company would give you vouchers or refund the delivery charge which is less than £10.

Mate, just tell them to hold it and go to the depot. Even if its a little way out, it'll save the hassle. They're open until 10pm at most depot's.
