*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_ShootOut_1.htm

Apple has taken the very good display on the iPad 2 and dramatically improved two of its major weak points: sharpness and color saturation – they are now state-of-the-art. Our lab tests and visual tests agree with Apple’s claim that the new iPad has “the best display ever on a mobile device” so we have awarded the new iPad the Best Mobile Display Award in DisplayMate’s Best Video Hardware Guide. But there’s more…the new iPad’s picture quality, color accuracy, and gray scale are not only much better than any other Tablet or Smartphone, it’s also much better than most HDTVs, laptops, and monitors. In fact with some minor calibration tweaks the new iPad would qualify as a studio reference monitor. So we have also awarded the new iPad the Best Mobile Picture Quality Award, which was previously held by the original Motorola Droid (not the more recent Droids, which all have poor picture quality). Finally, almost as impressive is that Apple has maintained the base price of $499. Who says Apple doesn’t compete aggressively on price!

How'd ya like dem Apples!

Not really essential at all unless it's too much trouble to give the power button a quick tap to put it to sleep or just let it go to sleep on its own.

I think i agree, its not too hard to press a button to sleep/wake.

As the issue is caused by the magnet facing the wrong way (iPad 3 must have the magnet facing a certain way now for the sleep/wake to work) how hard would it be to get to the magnet and flip it over?

I have read some people have managed to open their cover slightly and flip the magnet over, then it works. Although some people have simply cut the magnet out carfully, and then glued it back down. Not ideal but might not look too bad if done with skill.

What is the most efficient way to transfer video files to the iPad for later viewing? Is it conversion then transfer via iTunes?

Can anybody recommend a free app to do the conversion (e.g. from mkv files to any of the formats supported by the iPad).

Thanks
Randeep

i have iTunes set up to wirelessly sync with my iPad, so if i have a movie iTunes can play i can tell it to copy to the iPad. about 5 mins later it's available to cary round with me.... otherwise i just have home sharing turned on so i can view and play any movies/music on my iPad streaming over my wireless network.

i use handbreak for all my conversion needs

Exactly the same method that I'm using I think it's the best way to do things and the prime reason as to why I got the 16gb version, in the future I might cherry pick some of my favourite tracks but in the meantime it's just easier to use the iTunes Wi-Fi sync function and home sharing.

I have to say that movies look incredible on the screen.

Interesting, mine is 'warmer' than my ipad 2 but no where new as yellow as the centre one.

I have the problem of not being able to check, as i didn't own an ipad 2 previously. So not sure to what degree it might be effected or not. Its slightly warm as most people report, but i feel like i need to do a side by side to be sure.

For 1080p in handbrake just use the default high setting, thats what I have been using on the new apple tv.

Good results too, as suggested on the handbrake forum.

Cheers all

What have the default file sizes and formats that you have started with and how long has it aken?

got a 5gb 1080p MKV being converted now, says that its going to be 1 hour 17minutes.

I basically took the ipad option, then increased the width to 1920 to fit the source height.

Was converting a 9GB 1080p MKV file this morning before I left for work, handbrake was showing 2 hours & 20 minutes for the conversion time I will check the final file size when I get home later on today, thats using the high setting for my new apple tv.

Cheers

After a few days using it, I have to say I'm very impressed. It's looking increasingly likely that it will also replace my MacBook Pro, given the iPad does as much as I need from a portable device.
