I have my phone on a wireless charger stand thing on my desk so it's always facing me and I agree, I find FaceID much quicker, faster and easier than TouchID, it's just look and swipe. The same goes when I take it out of my pocket or pick it up off a flat surface, the flick has become second nature.

Unlocking it with the watch while wearing a mask will be great but I don't find I need to unlock my phone that much when I'm out and wearing a mask anyway.

Good luck with TouchID when wearing gloves btw ;)

FaceID is great, pick up the phone swipe up and it unlocks as the screen goes up and you are in. Yes its not convenient when out and about at the moment due to masks, but its definitely better than the old touch ID was.

As for Apple pay, as I have an apple watch this isn't an issue because no ID is required.

You just said it yourself. It's two gestures. Pick up the phone then swipe up, compared to just touch the phone without any need to pick it up.

Masks aren't just at the moment. It's been a year, and will likely be another year. So 24 months of it being useless.

That being said, gloves were never the issue for me with touchID since I don't spend most of my time in cold countries. what was an issue was water. Sailing around the world, my hands were often wet or fingertips dry/chafed from handling lines. TouchID doesn't like that.

When I'm motorcycling around various places, neither work, though it's quicker to remove my bike gloves than my helmet.

Anyway, FaceID is here to stay. The question is whether TouchID will return. The phones are so thick now, that touchID could easily be integrated into the button (that you have to press anyway for payments) just like it was on the Sony Z5. Looking forward to seeing how things develop.

Id be surprised if even 10% of what I use a mobile phone for can be done without actually needing to pick it up and use it properly. The only time I don't pick up my phone when I use it would be when I touch the screen to wake it to maybe change volume on music, or skip a track.

There’s plenty scenarios where face ID doesn’t work, I can’t think of any other than with gloves where Touch ID doesn’t work and to be fair I bet half of them times Face ID won’t work either.

Currently downloading 14.5 as I have a series 6 watch so will see how good their new idea is. Could be a big win as I have my Apple watch on 23/7

Face ID doesn’t fail for me. Whereas Touch ID failed very often, especially if my thumb or finger was slightly moist or damp from hand washing, or was slightly sweaty. I really don’t like Touch ID. (Unless my se2020 had a dodgy button)

edit- also, having a dry thumb, Touch ID didn’t like that either.

I think I will be upgrading my 7 to the next iPhone. Who knows, perhaps they will put a better camera and/or battery in this one!

The option of a replacement battery clip would be genius, but I cant see them doing that...

All of the 12 series have good batteries and cameras, as did the 11 series before them. What made you think otherwise?

Yeah, XS to 11 was a major jump in battery life. Rumours are that batteries are also getting even bigger for the 13 series.

I guess when you’ve had the 7 for as long as they have the battery would be quite bad at this point.

What a jump up though-7 to the 13!

Because friends that have had more modern iPhones still have to have a battery pack or charge twice a day.

And yes rather than upgrade, I have just renewed my battery.

I mean it depends on how often you are using it. The 12 easily lasts a day even with major use.
I was away for a family weekend (Friday morning to Saturday evening) last weekend. Took my 12 off charge on Friday around 10am and didn't need to charge up until around 9pm on the Saturday night. Admittedly I had in Low Power Mode the entire time but bear in mind I was out the entire time on 4g, took plenty of photos and even streamed some sky sports f1 on the Saturday morning for a couple of hours. Very impressed.
What helps is, unlike Android, you at least know the phone won't drain in standby. So I may have gone to bed on the Friday night with around 60% (can't recall exactly) knowing that come Saturday morning it would likely still be at 60%, or thereabouts. With an Android you have no idea what way it can go - especially with no WiFi. My Samsung S20 FE 5g could have plummeted 20% odd overnight for no reason whatsoever.

I'm considering the new iPhone as an upgrade from my X but I still don't know if its worth it. The only issue my X is having is with the battery which I could replace relatively cheaply. Still performs like a champ and the camera and everything is plenty good enough.

Thats the trouble with phones these days. They have been amazing for years now and everything is just an incremental upgrade. Even a 4 year old iPhone still performs brilliantly. Maybe I would enjoy the better battery life on the more recent models if I commuted to work and had to rinse the battery on 4g or didn't have it on charge most of the day.

With every new one I get, the length of ownership gets longer and longer. I’m still rocking an xs max and have no reason to update. Battery is great, the camera is great and it doesn’t lag. There’s not a lot a new iPhone is going to add to the party. If anything they’ll be removing features!

Absolutely love my 12 pro, I absolutely hammered it on last nights night shift, unplugged at 1615 yesterday and it’s only just hit 25% now. Alright I don’t use it for games, mainly listening to music, chonging Netflix or YouTube and internet browsing etc.
Just works perfectly with no fuss.

Other than gaming I struggle to see what an extra uplift in Hz would actually benefit the user with I mean maybe camera or playback but what else
