Apparently the 12 Mini was a huge flop, wonder how they’re gonna make its successor a more attractive proposition this year.

Or if they’re gonna cut their losses and remove it from the 2022 lineup, if the 13 mini doesn’t do well either.

I imagine some of the pent up demand for a smaller iphone was already spent on the SE.

That's most likely it. People who wanted a smaller iPhone just got the SE a few months earlier, I know several people who got the SE and didn't buy the 12 Mini even though they would have if they hadn't bought the SE.

Apparently much evidence suggests that most people simply want larger devices anyway.

Of course. But there is a marker for smaller iPhones, as the SE launch was very successful. I think they got the timing wrong, Apple should have released this SE back in 2019 to give people 18 months between buying it and a potential 12 Mini upgrade. 6 months was way too low.

Have at lest 3 people in my family that don't like big mobile phones..One has an iphone 8 another one has an iphone SE 2020 and i don't know what the other one has

Definitely flopped in terms of mass adoption, but the people who wanted a smaller phone really like it. Its just that not many people want smaller phones now.

The rumours are that this year will have have the same lineup as 2020, so the mini will be there again. But I think in future they should just go back to a 3 phone lineup and have the mini as the SE variant as it has the same size, but just an updated design.

Yup, I love my mini and never want a bigger phone. I agree re the SE though. They should look to drop the price of future Minis by £150, scrap the SE, and position the mini Mini as the cheaper iPhone

I thought I would have wanted the mini, but when it came to it, even the normal 12 felt smaller than what I had before (nokia 7 plus), and I just couldn't imagine being happy going smaller still. So I can understand why the 12 mini may not have been the massive success people thought it would be.

I think many people wanting a smaller phone would just get the SE, it's an iPhone and fairly cheap compared to the 12s, the price difference to the Mini isn't a great proposition for most. If it was a bit cheaper then maybe.

I like the idea of a mini as nice to have something compact but still decent spec and good camera. Smaller phones usually have too many limitations for me to consider them.

Sony did similar with their Android range a while back with the Compact line, but don't think they were that successful overall (I presume since they've stopped selling them on the newer ranges).

I bought a 12 in Jan. I will upgrade as soon as TouchID is brought back. FaceID is a big fail for my usage, and actually makes most things take longer.

P.S I have a mini, as anything larger than the iPhone 7 would be cumbersome for me. The mini turned out to be smaller than expected.

I can see the merits in TouchID and have enjoyed using it on the new iPad Air. However, if I could only have one I’d still choose FaceID. It’s definitely one of the best features after moving to iPhone from Androids and its plethora of fingerprint scanners.
I actually find FaceID to be quicker (for me anyway) except for the whole ‘mask’ thing right now but since a trip to the shop is a weekly event right now, if even that, it’s not a massive issue.

The mask thing is a big problem it has been for a year now and will likely to be for another year. I bet most change their phones roughly every 2 years, so that's a whole cycle of FaceID not working.

...But also, installing taps and payments, now you need to look at the phone and then double tap side button. With TouchID it was just a single touch, the phone could be sitting on your desk or coffee table no need to pick it up. This especially comes into play when using apple pay via a mac.

In store apple pay is now a faff, and even without a mask having to have the phone see me face is slower than pulling the phone out of my pocket with my finger already on the reader or ready to go.

I did read rumours somewhere that they might implement TouchID under the screen in future. Just a rumour though, but the rumours on the Macbooks for 2021 all seem to believe that Apple is reversing a fair few design decisions.

Great phone overall though. If only I could completely eliminate drive mode and the 'enable dictation' popup.

I would be surprised if apple restores touchID under the screen. Most people won't care about it and I think some of those that think they do will find that they prefer faceID. Would add cost to the phone, cost to repairs and potentially limit what they can do in the future with the screen.

I love faceID and even though its not been as useful in the past year I have been going out so infrequently that it hasn't annoyed me.

While I do think that Face ID is the more secure method, the way it is now still has flaws that touch ID doesnt.

For example I like to leave my phone on the desk and look over to it, but the poor angles of FaceID make it difficult for me to unlock the phone, whereas with touchID I used to be able to just open up the phone with no problems by touching it wherever it was placed.

Ideal scenario would be to have them both, but the downside is that unfortunately it will end up costing more

I just can’t see Apple implementing an under display TouchID scanner unless they’ve figured out a way to do it flawlessly - we know they don’t tend to do things by halves.
And in that regard none of the Android versions are flawless. Yes there are some extremely good ones but you will always have people saying they have issues be it with the optical version or the ultrasonic one.

I believe that leaves you with the capacitive scanner built into the power button á la the new iPad Air but whether Apple deem that ‘premium’ enough for their phones remains to be seen.

FYI the power button scanner on the Air is excellent.

I am surprised there are so many fans of face ID, I find it much slower and more inconvenient, and that's ignoring the face mask issue. I believe they are solving that issue with the next update, as long as you have an apple watch that is..

The only benefit of face ID is the additional real estate. Every time I use touch ID on my iPad I am reminded of how annoying face ID is. Looking at how bad touch ID is through the screen on other phones, I don't think that's a solution unless apple can work some magic.

I know some will see it as way that Apple are further locking you into their ecosystem but the watch/phone combo is a real game changer for me when it comes to unlocking my phone (I have iOS 14.5 installed). If you have a watch you should try it!

FaceID is great, pick up the phone swipe up and it unlocks as the screen goes up and you are in. Yes its not convenient when out and about at the moment due to masks, but its definitely better than the old touch ID was.

As for Apple pay, as I have an apple watch this isn't an issue because no ID is required.
