My contract is up for renewal on the 10th September. I’m going to get a full works plan with EE which has Apple One included as standard, work contributes to it plus I’ll get 20% off as my wife works in the NHS. With that setup it will be the cheapest way by far for me. Only problem is that I won’t get it on launch day.

I tend to buy outright, although usually on a 0% CC so I can pay it off on my own terms. I don't like being locked into long term repayments.

Currently got a £12/month sim from Three with unlimited calls & texts with 100GB data, which had about £60 Topcashback so doesn't work out too bad overall.

Currently got a OnePlus 7T that I've had a few years, time for an upgrade I think. Keeping an eye on the iPhone 14 to see if it's going to be worth it.

Coming from an XR and thinking about upgrading to the pro, possibly holding out for the 15.

I like the idea of the pro max, but I think it might be annoyingly big for everyday use, particularly if you don’t get any extra screen real estate for web browsing (which seems to be the case with the max models).

Really, the XR is still totally fine, so it’s a luxury upgrade.

Edit: on a separate note, for those looking for media consumption devices for travel, the newest large pro iPads with the big, decent screens are absolutely amazing. You could watch content for hours and hours on those and it barely dents the battery. Got one maybe a year or so ago for about a £1k and think it’s been one of our better purchases. Gets used all the time, at desks, travelling, in bed etc. We have an OLED tv and there’s not much in it tbh, beyond acceptable for its use case. The fact I’m gushing this much about a device should infer how brilliant it is.

I went to the apple store today to see whether I preferred the form factor of the 13 pro max or not (with reference to the 13 pro). The 13 pro max really wasn’t as big of a jump from the XR as I expected and I have quite small hands. No issues with fast one hand typing, the only thing that was a bit of a stretch was getting all the way to the emoji button one handed…. But I’m writing this on my XR two handed by default… so… no issues. I think the slightly chunkier form factor of the XR compared to other standard sized phones has already trained my hands accordingly. The standard 13 pro felt pretty small in the hand compared to the XR, probably because it’s less wide.

More interestingly, I busted the myth I stated above that there isn’t any more screen real estate on the pro max compared to the pro. It’s not life changing but there definitely is:

^Notice that there is slightly more text per line and more real estate vertically.

Unexpectedly, I think the pro max is the one I’m going for :)

So looks like the pill and hole will be bridged in software to make it a long cutout, but with the camera and microphone privacy indicators running in between:

This I don't understand.
To me, the space above the cutout is useless so surely this method actually consumes MORE screen real estate than the notch? It's hard to tell from renders I admit but at best it's going to be the same.

I think we'll probably do the family phone shuffle once the 14 is out. My dad wants a new phone and so does the mrs. Mrs' XS Max will go to my dad, my 12 Pro Max will go to the mrs, I get a 14 Pro Max.

Just thinking ahead a little here, is there a go-to screen protector for the iPhone? I've used a Whitestone Dome on my Note 10 for 3 years and it's been really good. Just curious as to whether there's a good alternative for the iPhone, or indeed any thoughts from people that run a bare screen.

It’s almost like Apple don’t want to give us a smaller notch design to stay different.

There’s plenty of phones on the market now that have much smaller notches or cut outs for the camera and facial recognition.

Look at the cheap android phones.
