***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

I've been DE shaving for a week or so now, my set up is Merkur 34C using a new Astra blade, and shaving every other day after a shower. I go WTG and XTG. The shave is pretty good, but certainly not 'baby smooth'. I try to keep the razor at about 30 degrees. Should I consider trying ATG, and risk the potential irritation that might cause (especially on my neck) or would it be worth trying feathers?
Or could it just be my technique? Over the course of about 8 shaves I have nicked myself once.

Any suggestions for a slightly more aggressive razor than the Feather AS-D2S?

Do you use feather blades in it? If you do and you still want more aggressive consider an adjustable like the Futur, or like I did, get a vintage adjustable. The fat tip and red tips are rated highly.

Improve technique and do atg. If done correctly you won't get any irritation.

I have a Futur and that's like an angry wasp, so much more aggressive than either my Muhle R89 or Merker 38C Barberpole, it shaves so close when I go over with the alum block I whips like crazy but then I don't need to shave for 4 days after.

Recommendations for a good post-shave moisturiser please? Have been using this: http://www.bluebeards-revenge.co.uk/product/the-bluebeards-revenge-post-shave-balm-100ml/
I bought a tub of that and it was useless gloop. I ended up giving it away.

Can thoroughly recommend Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Shop Aftershave Gel. It works well, you only need a tiny amount so a tube lasts a very long time and it has a very mild scent so it's a good base for any other aftershave you want to layer on it.

Alternatively, they do a Sandalwood version which has a much stronger scent with the same moisturising properties and can be used instead of an aftershave.

I've linked to the manufacturers, other places sell them cheaper so shop around.

I'm sure it is lovely. But come on, give over:

A classic aromatic citrus fragrance opening with top notes of fresh lemon blended with uplifting herbal nuances of lavender, thyme and rosemary, A fresh, green floral heart of jasmine and white cyclamen is warmed by a subtle spice accord before descending into a base of precious woods, moss, and amber musks. Contains essential oils of: Lemon, Thyme, Rosemary, Lavandin, Galbanum, and Patchouli.

I've always used the Nivea Post Shave Balm. Works just fine for me.

I use the Sandalwood version of this, it smells lovely :)

I couldn't find a post-shave moisturiser/balm/gel that I got on with, now I only ever use classic Old Spice aftershave. Don't think I'll ever change, such a bracing feeling, smells so good and leaves the skin nice and fresh and taught feeling. Mmmmm-mmm.

I'll recommend my recent revelation, after I was annoyed about not getting that smooth a finish using my DE for XTG/ATG on the second pass.

I started using a gillette fusion (boo hiss) for the second pass. As long as I did a proper first pass WTG using my merkur, going ATG with a fusion was the easiest thing in the world. It takes half the time and honestly leaves a very, very smooth finish. And because you aren't cutting much hair, you can use the fusion over and over again, so the traditional cost argument against it doesn't hold.

IMO a DE razor is king for cutting hair with a sharp blade and not giving any tugging or pulling or rash.
But the fusion is unbeatable for getting an incredibly close finish, ONCE the vast majority of hair is gone already.

See if you can find proper Old Spice, made in India using the original Shulton recipe. It's even better.

I've still got plenty of tubes of the Indian made Old Spice Shaving cream. I love it.

I use 39C as my secondary daily driver, its pretty aggressive, though if you have your technique down it works fine and shaves are very close. I do find I need to be a bit more wary still going ATG even after years with DE shavers, but end result is worth it.

Yes, Feather razor & blades. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out.

I've tried ATG a few times and find it uncomfortable/hurts. Is that supposed to be the case?

So I took the plunge and bought a Edwin Jagger DE89L with a blade selection pack. Tried it last night with a Feather blade and have to say Im a little dissapointed at the shave. I was being VERY cautious so Im not writing it off just yet any tips or advice appreciated.

I used a hot flannel (3 times) to soften the hair, Proraso pre shave cream follwed by Taylor of Old Bond Street cream applied with a badger brush. 3 passes, WTG, ATG, XTG Cold rinse and then ToOBS balm.

Im sure its just my technique and the fact I was very careful with it being the first time Id ever used one.

Which part was disappointing? The experience of the shave? The closeness? Irritation afterwards?

Barely anyone gets good results after DE shave #1, it normally takes 4 or 5 goes before you start getting good results
