***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

The alum block (or stingy block I lovingly call it) is an absolute gem, since using one I never get any post shave rash and also it's a good guide to see where you're applying too much pressure because it "let's you know" with a little tingle, also great on cuts for that gritting of teeth and howling like a werewolf pose us manly shavers like to practice :p

Well it's gone and happened. My last order of DE Blades was about 2yrs ago and all I have remaining now are dreaded Derby Extras that are useless for me.

I tend to use Feathers a lot on my old trusty Merkur Slant (37c) razor. What are good blades nowadays? I used to use a combo of Astras, Feathers and Supermax blades as I've always loved a extremely close shave.

Came back from Italy, Rome 2 weeks ago and you wouldn't believe how hard it was to find shaving foam/soap! Ended up paying 3 Euros for a tiny Proraso can along with a disposable razor that was awful to use!

Great to see this thread alive and folks keeping an interest in DE Shaving!

Pretty much Feathers over anything else I've tried - ultimate sharpness and ease of shave. Although I did recommend previously to someone the PolSilver Super Iridium blades. The PolSilver's are no longer in production but still plentiful in supply and are a great blade that lasts a very long time. I've had 8 plus, full 3 pass shaves without the blade feeling like it was starting to dull.

I just bought 100 Polsilver Super Iridium along with my usual Astra Platinum (Greens)....should last a good while.

I tried the med prep blue and some of the other Persona's in a sample bundle, just not the smoothest of shaves for me and a few more nicks than I'm used to. It looks like I'm an Astra Platimun kind of guy.

I've used Astra Plat for years, I dont know if it is my technique that has just got settled with one blade, is that possible? I've tried almost all of the highly regarded blades and they either skin me alive or give me a rubbish shave.

Heard a 'tip' the other day - shaving using cold water, cuts down on inflammation/rashes. Does the trick for me, using a DE razor.

I actually heard that in the film Good Morning Vietnam many years ago, if I prep properly it works ok but I still prefer a nice warm/hot shave.

You'll like the PolSilver's they're a little more 'efficient' than the Astra blades but are super smooth and lasted ages on my thick growth. I found the Astra got a little tuggy after about 3 or 4 shaves but still did the job.

Never done the cold water shave. I've always gone with 'hot knife through butter' theory and had the blade run under hot tap water as well as hot pre-shave and lather/gel. Never really had a problem with weepers or irritation providing a good pre and post shave ritual is done.

Surely a cold water shave wouldn't bsoften the hairs, and the skin wouldn't relax to expose more hair? I always went with hot shower/bath to let more hair stick up and get cut, plus soften the hairs. Always seemed to work but I'm open to experimentation!

Thanks for that. I'll check out the PolSilver's for sure. Since I use probably the Merkur Slant, which is probably the most aggressive razor around - Feathers tend to dull after just 2 shaves so I need to try and find something that provides a good balance between close shaves and the quantity of shaves. Just looked at the prices de razor blade packs on shaveshack! They've got up in price a bit!

I forgot to warm my blade up the other day at the start of a shave and had a shock as it felt cold. Can't imagine doing a whole shave with cold face and blade. Not for me! Just pulled the trigger on a pack of feathers, don't know which razor to try them in first. Shavette, QShave (future clone) or Merkur 15C.

My shaving brush has come out of it's handle. There's plenty of resin on the badger hair still and it's come clean out of the bottom. What's the best way to go about gluing it back in there? Do I need to chip off the resin still on the hair, or just try and glue it back in as is? And can anyone recommend suitable product? I could just superglue it back in but something tells me that's a bad idea.

I'd use epoxy. More heat resistant, more likely to stick to various things, and it's not brittle. Try to clean/degrease the socket and stub first as grime will stop glue working.

I think I get my Polsilvers delivered in a couple of weeks.....yes weeks, I'll fire a box of 5 along to you if you can wait that long? I may have a med prep or 2 that I haven't touched yet too if you fancy those.

I normally use a scrap piece of plastic or something to mix them on, just put equal amounts on to the board then mix thoroughly and apply. I remember it smelling quite bad when I last used it.

Some actually come in a 2 piece syringe that puts the right amount on with one squeeze, you will probably just have to judge it by putting a line of resin and one of hardener next to each other and then mixing.

I'm saying equal amounts, some resins do require different ratios, It looks like that one is equal though.

Is there a correct way to dispose of DE blades? Currently just re-wrap them in that paper they come in and bin them. Although I've just read on Reddit that the Feather blades come with a disposer on the bottom of the case, never even realised they had a separate slot for used blades.

I put them back in the paper and wrap in loo roll too, then in the bin. Putting them into a hard container (like a pill pot) or something like that is a good shout. I tried to cut a suitable sized 'slot' in the lid of one of those once to neatly store them in, can't remember where it ended up.
