***The Official MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread***

I am ****in tired of tryin and failing to overclock this stupid card
it stays stable at 775/1125 ( oc via ccc )
So today i decided to take it to 5870 clocks
after editing afterburner cfg my voltage is shown as 1164 aleady
so i lowered it to 1150 and set clocks to 850 and mem to 1200
i use Furmark to test stability
It appeared stable for few minutes and then got artifacts grr
also at one point it appeared stable at 860/1175 @ 1139 volts
but again after 20 minutes got artifacts
what the **** am i supposed to do now ?
please some one tell me the proper way to over clock
some hidden techniques or whatever
i want it stable atleast at 5870 stock clocks ( 850/1200 )

HELP!!!

Anyone interested in MSI 5850 Twin Frozr II bios with overclocking limits set to 1050/1300 MHz? This is the official bios with just overclocking limits changed. Fan speed is stuck at 55% on default, you'll need to use Afterburner or CCC to set it to your liking.

No powerplay issues, no 2d/3d profiles needed, eliminates any software problems when overclocking.

Remember, flashing is risky and can bork a card.

I would like the bios, cant even overclock my cards unless i turn off ULPS in the registry and enable unofficialoverclocking in msi :( these cards arent that great really, i expected more, im having to pump 1.28V just to get a 900mhz core, my memory screws up on anything over 1100mhz

Ive got a MSI 5850 TF Crossfire setup. If I try to overclock by 1mhz using MSI Afterburner my system locks up. Using Cat 10.12 drivers. Don't know if it's the drives, MSI afterburner or a BIOS issue.
Just letting you know. See if anybody else has overclocked these cards in crossfire.

You need to disable ULPS in the registry mate, had the exact same problem. Google disabling ULPS. Its pretty straight forward, however powerplay wont work after you do it. So its a case of weighing up whether you want higher framerates or a cheaper electricity bill :)

Mine seems stable enough when I don't use afterburner, it's not locked up for a while with it turned off..........unfortunately I was only using afterburner to reduce fan noise.

It's not even like it was overheating when it crashed or anything :( I'll have to run some stability tests tonight without afterburner & see how it does.

Voltage too low for your targeted clock speed, also as far from what we found from out overclocking experience on this card, dx11 games don't like memory clock at over 1100MHz, so may be 850MHz/1100MHz is a more realistic target.

I can overclock my card to 975MHz/1100MHz, but that require 1.275v. Even my 835MHz/1100MHz overclock require 1.170v. I would suggest you try taking the voltage to 1.200v and test your targeted overclock speed first, and if it is stable, THEN work your way down on the voltage...until you find the minimum voltage necessary to keep the overclock stable.

Thanks I'll leave it as it is as I'm happy with the standard CF pefromance. I was just curios to se what the cards would clock to, incase I need more peformance for future games.

I want this BIOS and also the instructions of how to properly flash the card please :)
I am tired and trying and failing to overclock via Afterburner again and again :(

Sure mate, I also found messing around with Afterburner's profiles tiring.

As per this thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18061954

1) Prepare a bootable USB flash drive.

Here's the tool to format a USB flash drive
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18807&d=1222699942

Here's the bootfiles I used
http://www.4shared.com/file/43544416/39060a9e/HPUSBFW_BOOTFILES.html?s=1 (Extract them, then make a folder called BOOTFILES, stick the extracted files into the folder)

Plug in the USB drive that you want to use.

Install and run HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
Select the USB Drive. In the "File system" drop down box, pick FAT32. Tick "Quick Format". Tick "Create a DOS startup disk, using DOS system files located at and click the "..." and direct it to the BOOTFILES folder you made.
Click start.

2) Download and copy this BIOS file to the bootable USB - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OZAPWEZ4

3) Download and copy ATI Flash Tool on the USB drive (make sure to extract the files) - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1731/ATIFlash 3.79.html

4) Restart your PC with the USB flash drive plugged in, boot from the USB drive (it's F10 or F11 on my motherboard to choose the boot drive)

5) Type this command in the console:

atiflash -f -p 0 flashx.rom

And press enter. It should inform you that the flash was successful and an option to restart the PC iirc.

Make sure to follow the instructions and there shouldn't be any problems.

Once your card is flashed you can disable unofficial overclocking in Afterburner and the profiles, and enjoy overclocking without the hassle of software powerplay control.

Thanks a lot :)
I'l try this out soon :)
Btw after successfully flashing the card , will the overclocking limit ( 775/1125 ) increase in CCC or i still have to overclock using afterburner?

it will increase in CCC, but if you want high clocks you'l still have to use afterburner as you'll still have to add the extra voltage needed

Because you'll still be within 'official overclocking limits' however powerplay should wrk correctly when you're in 2d mode

just ordered one of these to go with my sapphire card.

Will a OCZ600SXS be ok to power crossfire, i5 750 @ 3.5Ghz, 3 HDDs & 4GB RAM?

You'll just have to try and see, ide say that 600watt is too little really, ive only got a 750watt power supply now, and im a little uncomfortable with that!
