The Official Nexus S Thread

Mine's just gone on eBay to fund my recent GSII purchase. The Nexus S is a great little phone and I've really enjoyed using it, but got the GSII cheap so it was worth moving.

That is interesting. What keys do you need for your Oyster card?

Sorry for the late reply, not sure exactly what the keys are but I believe you have to obtain them using nefarious means! I browsed online and it looks like you need an NFC reader and software tools to hack into your card.

What's the general consensus on this phone then? I've skimmed through the thread and people seem to have mixed opinions.

I'm due an upgrade in a month or two (Orange) and I'm torn. I'm waiting for the Blackberry 9900 to appear as I support them at work and it seems like a safe bet. I also like the look of the Galaxy S II but it's just a bit big for my liking.

I'm coming from a basic Nokia which I've had for years so any amount of toys on a phone will be exciting for me!

For some reason I don't like HTC phones so it's really between this, the BB or the Samsung (which I think I've discounted already to be honest).

It's not a good idea to buy one now in all honesty, but it's not a 'bad' phone.

You shouldn't discount a Galaxy S II unless you've actually tried one in your hand and decided it's too big, because there isn't really much difference.

What about the iPhone 4 (or wait for iPhone 5)?

Chap I work with has the S II and I have to admit it's pretty cool as a device for web-browsing and all that, but it's just a bit too big to be a phone that's going to sit in my pocket.

I did ponder the iPhone 5 but it's not appearing for a while is it?

What makes the Nexus a bad idea?

S II feels a LOT better in the pocket than the HTC Desire I had before. It weighs a lot less and is a lot thinner so is almost invisible. It just slides in and out and when walking it's rarely a bulge like the Desire was.

It's probably the most pocket friendly phone I have come across.

Just because a mobile is old doesn't mean that it is a bad idea or crap, if you used that theory you could say the same about the iphone 4, desire, desire HD etc.

The nexus S is still a great device, got a great screen, feels nice in the hand (IMO), very light, loads of internal storage, the CPU and GPU is still very capable and the camera is good. The only bad thing about the nexus s in my view is that you can't use a micro SD card as well and the price is still too high for it at the minute IMO, personally I wouldn't pay more than £270-280.

As for official updates if you root and flash then this won't be a problem as you can get them no problems then, however if you don't want to root or flash and just want the stock android experience, then a google device is the best possible choice as you are guaranteed to get the updates straight away, and you will get them all unless the hardware can't support it and you don't have any bloat either.

Unless you need dual core and more RAM for faster web browsing, playing media files, which you wouldn't be able to play on single core, faster and smoother experience overall etc. and are willing to pay the extra £100-130 for the GS 2 or the sensation, then the nexus S is one of the next best choices IMO.

Nobody said it was crap, and nobody said it was a bad idea, just not a good one :p

It's a nice phone but I'm not sure why you would buy one over an Xperia Arc for example or any of the better phones.

Haven't Google guaranteed equal updates for all phones over the next 18 months or so as well?

I'd have an iPhone 4 over one by a country mile, put it that way (but yes, it is expensive).

O right, it just came across like that :p

Much better screen, very light, stock android so no need to faff about with rooting etc.

I don't know how the battery life compares to the arc, but it is much better than the DHD, incredible S etc. unless you must have sense or a bigger screen.

Yeah they said they where going to do that with the 2.3 update though, so now they have actually confirmed it for this one, however I honestly don't see that making one bit of difference at all, as Samsung have used excuses about the hardware not being able to support the newer updates (complete BS as most of them have got the updates anyway from the community) and due to it is too old despite only being out for a few months for most of their mobiles and then HTC didn't bother updating the hero to 2.2, didn't bother updating the desire HD to sense V3 due to the hardware doesn't support it yet again over at xda a full sense V3 rom is working, even the desire has some of sense V3 stuff implemented and they weren't going to update the desire to 2.3 due to hardware again despite 2.3 fully working ROMs being out for months, they quickly did a u turn though etc.

I prefer the nexus S more than iphone 4, don't like the OS one bit :p, for the price of the iphone 4 you might as well get the GS 2 :p

Hi all,

I have finally jumped on the android bandwagon:D

And yes I got the Nexus S! Its my first android phone coming from an Nokia 6700c and its fantastic, really smooth and fast! I could have got the HTC sensation but it just felt HUGE in my hand (i have short fingers and it was a stretch to get to every point on the screen) and i love the slightly curved design on the nexus.

Now its getting to understand this app malarky with all the permissions, like a clock wants to know my phones identity and who im calling:confused: why?
its a clock!!!

I have seen the android app thread but no one has said how safe the apps they use are, going to red through the thread again and try to understand all of this.

So any advice for an android newbie would be ace!
Thanks,

Brack
